IGN Tweet & Core Game = F2P - what does this mean? [unconfirmed]

Prepare for hacker and spambot city!
That is from 2014….
Thanks for spoiling it for us ign. I guess I know who NOT to get my gaming news from now as every game maker now knows you do not know the definition of ‘embargo’.
I was curious not but I regret looking. Official reveal ruined. :/
Even so, there’s more announcements to be made, and the “Guild wars 2 is getting raids” is not enough information to satisfy me the slightest, i wanna hear EVERYTHING about it this weekend (Well maybe not everything, but atleast a good chunk of it)
This weekend is not spoiled, infact, i’m more hyped to see what more they will announce, and how they will manage raids, this is great news, even for me as a casual player that only plays WvW.
Anything they add to the game is a + for me right now, all those big guilds out there must be really kitten happy right now
Meh, hoping that’s a troll, raids and raid culture ruin games and communities.
There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon
Looking forward to it! Let’s hope this content is actually challenging, though.
EDIT:
Wait, why are you guys upset at IGN? There is nothing in the post revealing a whole lot. We already knew GW2 is releasing “challenging group content”, and a raid is just that. Just curious, what else would you expect new challenging group content to be?
Wow…. that was a big reveal…. I bet someone at anet is feeling fairly salty at the moment.
Well I made a bad choice coming here. xD I was browsing IGN’s feed and saw that they had posted a GW2 Trailer about the base game going F2P and assumed that was all the tweet had included as well . . . haha whoops, guess not. They’ve since taken the trailer down as well, but it seems like someone there has screwed up rather big time. This is starting to become a regular occurrence for them, it seems. I could have sworn they did this with MGS:V sometime this year as well.
Ah well, even if I spoiled it for myself, I’m no less excited. Can’t wait to see those details! Shouldn’t this thread be shut down soon, though? >.>
As someone who just came back to the game and bought HoT… these two announcements worry me.
Raids make games super competitive and Raiders have a stigma of being negative towards casual players, which I am one of.
The Core Game being free… well that might mess with the economy, WvW and EotM (the latter where I spend most of my time) and invite even more gold bots and spammers.
I’ll wait before jumping the gun. Because Anet has to have obviously seen these issues coming and taken precautions against them.
Wow…. that was a big reveal…. I bet someone at anet is feeling fairly salty at the moment.
Hardly a “big reveal.” We already knew “challenging group content” would be described on Saturday. There are only so many ways that can happen, especially since we know dungeons like we already have are out and it’s not Fractals either.
IGN gonna get sued!!!
Everything but no f2p for core game pls it will cause only problems, gw2 have a lot of ppl don’t need f2p!!!!!
Not thrilled to hear GW2 core may go F2P. Sigh. Bot/spam incoming, if true. =(

It might not be a big reveal to us because we expect certain things. However, you can bet this is a big reveal to the people who put in countless hours to develop the content. Their moment is now spoiled and everyone who looks now knows. It’s like someone taking a peek at their present early. Sure it’s what they expected it to be but they weren’t the ones to present it.
Looking forward to it! Let’s hope this content is actually challenging, though.

No in this game a group is 5 people a raid would be challenging groups content
Gaming “Jornalism” is at it again!
Well someone just got fired today.
No problem with bade game going f2p it has already been as cheap as 10$ so what ever.
Now as for raids, it was going to happen. Challenging group content that is instanced so you can balance it is a raid no matter how you set it up. Now that said, if the start a gear treadmill with raids then I will be kittened. Fancy tittle, fancy skins, what ever. Just no gear driven power creap.
The beat part is going to be the forums and the constant complaining that it’s either too hard or too easy and blah blah blah lack of rewards blah blah blah dungeons not being released fast enough, blah blah blah and all the other standerd complaining that comes with raids.
It was 2 vs 20 but its ok we got’em both!
The amount of gold seller whispers and other bs will escalate… *if true
(edited by Lunacy Solacio.6514)
Put raids on a GW1 style mission progression with multiple secondary objectives and unique drops and I’m sold.
Content progression is good, but only when you’re not required to repeat content you’ve mastered in to infinity.

Wasn’t it IGN that also stated a number of things that Colin has flat-out said were wrong? I wouldn’t be trusting them, honestly.

Yeah. The amount of XP needed to train mastery tracks.
Sigh I hope it’s not true.
1. Free to play typically means the game is over. When games go free to play they don’t last as long. And the amount of spam we will get from gold sellers will be awful.
2. We don’t need raids. I understand people like them and have been asking for them but seriously go play wow and ff14. A large amount of people in this game got it to get away from garbage that destroys the community in other mmo games.
Anet please tell me it’s not true. Your looking more like a wow copycat, next it will be a gear treadmill
Looks like someone is clearing out their desk and boxing up their belongings at IGN today..
If the cost related detail is true I guess it explains things… And also if true I’m glad I know already. I’m terrified of everything anet might do, a warning makes it little easier to deal with…
at least with F2P core game, PvP should be more lively lol
and its not much of a spoiler about raids…
Most of the community already speculated that it will be raids… not to mention the hints in the past year…
We all knew it was not going to be open world as the new challenging content so that leaves hardcore dungs or raids…Not a big reveal… more interested in the gameplay/mechanics/rewards of the raids that will be revealed on saturday hopefully
Core game is for free? Does that mean everyone can get 30 of these accounts and get the daily log in rewards (165 T6 mats/28 days)? Or are the login rewards only for those who have paid. Because that would crash the T6 market, if true.
ANet may give it to you.
I’m honestly not sure how I feel about the core game going free to play. I mean, they could do something akin to WoW’s first 20 lvls is free to play or something, and then you can purchase the game if you want to continue after that. It would allow a lot more people to “try it out” without the up front commitment. However, I’m very leery of just straight up “free to play” all of the core game. Sends the wrong image imo. Who knows, maybe it’ll be ok though.
As for raids… no, I can’t say I’m surprised. Not after the raid cdi, the specific hiring of a “raid designer.” No, not a surprise at all. The word itself makes me twitch, due to some extremely bad experiences in WoW, but this isn’t WoW, so there’s hope. I seriously hope Anet didnt go overboard with this concept though. I am really hoping for something more akin to GW1 ‘elite areas’ as opposed to WoW’s “heroic 40-man” raids. I will cross my fingers and wait for saturday I guess.
They would also need to prohibit the free accounts from posting on the forums. I read ArcheAge forum with its free accounts. Gold sellers and sellers of sexual aids advertised regularly on there. They would get banned, get another account and post again.
ANet may give it to you.
I fear for the economy if this turns out true… free core accounts will turn into horrifying inflation of basic commodities on the BLTC.

Kitten, it’s so true. There will be a better way to sell gold than stealing accounts. Just creating 30 of them getting free laurels, exchanging them for T6 mats and getting profit in $$$$$$.
I would like to ask!
Will there be a separate servers for F2P players!?
Are you asking if Anet will spend money to add/upgrade servers?
Sure, free game. Let me do 200 account so i can get 1000g every 28 days from laurels.
I’d LOVE a 10 man hardcore raid environment. Lack of raids is what my wow friends use as a reason to refuse to play gw2 with me. I know a lot of people dislike raids because of wow but I imagine a hard 10 man raid but with the combat of gw2. That will bring a lot of other wow Raiders over. Hopefully the rest of my wow friends will join me if the content is designed well enough.
Looks like everyone is going to damage control. These links are all leading to dead ends. They are taking things down faster than the Deadpool Comic Con trailer, lol
This free-to-play Pandora’s Box may concern me with regards to gold farmers, bots, and chat spam if Anet has no real plan/tools to deal with these issues. If they make it so free-to-play accounts cannot send mail or sell things on the trading post, i would be more ready to think this is a good idea. The only other issue that could potentially be difficult to solve would be the chat spam.
I’m looking forward to Saturday so I can read up on the details.

However they do have the tech for trial accounts: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/play-guild-wars-2-for-free-today/
How did they work? No mail and TP I bet.
The base game really should not go free entirely. I could see, perhaps, free trial being available all the time, but such “trial” accounts would need some limiters.
If the free core experience is everything in the core game including gem store, TP, and daily login rewards then RIP the economy, so many alts created for the sole purpose of daily login farming.
Community will also take a big, massive hit, increasing the likelihood of trolls and salty people. World bosses that require coordination (Teq, Vinewrath, Triple Trouble, etc) will increase the chance of failure because of the fluctuation of trolls.
The free accounts would have to be prohibited from buying and selling on the trading post, emailing, limits on chat and whispering, no posting on the forums, no putting items in or out of guild banks and no daily login rewards
ANet may give it to you.
For those that are curious about the link that is shown at the end of the IGN video (welcome.guildwars2.com/Play-For-Free), it gives a “Page Not Found” notice, though not a normal “Foo! Quaggan…” page not found message.
Also, the IGN page (http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/08/29/pax-2015-guild-wars-2-getting-raids-and-play-the-core-game-for-free) also gives a Page Not Found notice since it technically won’t be up until the 29th.
Just mentioning it so others do not waste time typing them out and checking.

Oh, come on, they’re not stupid. Of course there will be mail and tp limit on trial accounts. Or a time window at least.
“ANet. They never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity to not mess up.”
Mod “Posts created to cause unrest with unfounded claims are not allowed” lmao
No, they aren’t stupid. Although sometimes they are a bit naive, I think. Or just don’t think through all of the ramifications.
