Hm now. Let’s think about this whole situation.

ArenaNet has stressed a couple of times that they want to have a buy to play game, not a f2p game. If they wanted to show that their base game is becoming f2p, why do they not call it f2p? Instead they call it play for free. Is it maybe the same as always? Could it be that ArenaNet is stuck in time and play for free means still that it has simply no subscription costs?

Then it would mean this is just a campaign to make marketing for buying HoT or cheaper GW2 base game keys.

Our only source for the exact information that the base game is becoming free is IGN. IGN is, like some people said, none for misinterpreting small information. TBH: You can blazingly fast misinterpret these things.

The trailer itself doesn’t say anything about the free base game and it even shows the WvW map of the addon. I would call this suspicious. Exspecially the last point. Why would you show a WvW map that is not coming in the nearer future, when you want to advertize the soon beginning f2p era of your game? That makes no sense. I mean it makes no sense at all. And to emphasize it further: The marketing teams put a lot of thinking work in this kind of trailers. They don’t do such mistakes.

Raids are expected to be much more difficult instanced content than dungeons, but without pushing gear treadmill. It’s a matter of playing the game to its maximum, and making use of every tool you have at your disposal. If it doesn’t touch gear treadmill, I am all for it.

Expecting something 5x harder than a Season 1 Marionette.

Lol, you know how often Marionette bombed, sometimes hard, sometimes closely? 5 times harder would maybe enable 5% of all people to do it^^

So is a rumor? is a reality? guild wars2 Going f2p, is opening not a window, not a door, is a friking portal for gold spammers on chat and hackers everywhere, been that said, i think that they are expecting that to happen, limiting the amount of gold you can send a week, but that kind of measures don’t work for hackers… if that true i wonder how long we have to wait to see GW2 on “TERA” mode, a single material or rare been 10000000000g, i enjoy this game so much but i don’t like the way things are going, please share your points fo view… lest see the forum burn…

Yeah, it was run by a lot of people who didn’t know each other, or the challenge itself. It was unorganized. Now you have instanced raids (a much easier way to coordinate a pre-defined group of individuals), and since then people have learned a lot about the game and the skills, so overall folks have learned to master their classes better.

Keep in mind that we’re not going to have a gear treadmill—that alone will remove the worst part of raids and raiders.

Just thinking out loud as I’ve never played WoW (got bored to hell after 15 mins): what makes a raid “raid”? What exactly is missing from GW2 that this magical word “raid” would solve?

Don’t shoot me just wondering.

-Leadership.
-Organization level required.
-The precision of players in executing their roles which are tied directly to their classes (gw2 does not have this), hence holy trinity.
-Epic boss mechanic.
-Gigantic massive pressure with 0 or close to 0 room for errors. (which is impossible for GW2)
-That kitten yah moment when you beat the boss for the first time.
-Loots.
-Lots of elitism and precision from skills to gears. (which gw2 lack of too)
When all those come together like a well oiled machine … oh yah.

In Teq for instance you have roles, but those roles are loosely interchangeable … ne1 can defense, ne1 can turrets, ne1 can dps. So you ended up with this feeling of being insignificant n just meeeh cruising through the fight. Oh yah, killed? go wp … no pressure. You can equip n trait whatever you like, no1 care and no1 will check you.

Oh yeah, that would be the icing on the cake, a bunch of pre-assembled guys that can spare the two hours it takes to make a 5 times highpowered marionette.

Throw in the one reward only rule(only 1 player gets the big prize, a chosen frew a better consolidation prize and the rest a spoon), and we´re straight back in 2005 again, right at square 1.

But tell me, what are you gonna do when the first raid favors for example foul and the second knight gear? Be a good grinding squire and make an armor for each?^^

I think the easiest way to see it is :
- GW2 : F2P game
- GW2: Heart of Thorns : B2P game

The difference with what already exists on the market is that both games can interact together. Let’s be fair the main development going to the game will be on the HOT part not on the core.
On the other hand, every Gw2 player will encounter tons of player playing a subclass they can’t or access loot they can only dream of…. it will attract them to buy GW2:HOT.

@Pino, you summed up the core ideas, but I’d like to add a bit to the carrot on a stick. Reward-wise, Fractals lightly mimic the idea behind raids more than any other content. You have: a) items obtainable over the course (rings with pristine relics), b) pure random drop skins (the flaw for this one is that the weapon itself is random, and it’s only a skin, it should be a fractal skin box). This is the working scheme for loot in raids a la GW2 IMO.

You either make a content use all of your skills in the appropriate moment, or continue with this max. dmg bs we already have. ANet’s call.

One thing I think everyone is forgetting about why gw2 raiding would be amazing. Everyone says if you want raids go to wow but could you imagine a well designed raid with gw2 combat?!? That’s the dream. In fact I have 12 friends RIGHT NOW that would pull the trigger on their purchase of the game if it weren’t for a lack of satisfying end game. I know people will say gw2 has one and the game isn’t for them but it’s a LOT of people who claim the end game sucks. I am so excited for a gw2 combat filled raid that I can show my wow guildies. Hopefully they will come over and see what the rest of the game has to offer.

This is my guess, too.

Basically, at any time, a new player can play the core game for free. That includes all of the current areas, dungeons (and maybe fractals), sPvP, and WvW. Then, you basically buy the current expansion for “expansion access” and paid status. Keep in mind, too, that all future expansions are intended to include previous expansions as well.

TLDR thread

If the F2P version has the restrictions data mined, we will be fine. No harm.

If we do get raids. I wont be concerned about lack of content from the expansion. Dungeons are good, but the 5 man party size turned me off. 8-16 or more players allows casual players to participate in challenging content with much less pressure than 5 players. Who knows, they might even like it so much they get into more challenging content.

imho: This strategy would be incredible short sighted. The most content of gw2 will stay in the base game. ArenaNet emphasized a couple of times that the addon has not as much content as it maybe could have. Thus I think we won’t see a real f2p base game. Maybe a bigger trial account.

That’s largely assuming that it’s like other games Raids. From what I remember of the Raid CDI Chris constantly said to move away from that notion and that these would be Guild Wars 2 raids which is not necessarily what you’d expect from other games.

There will not be raids like people think of when you think of WoW or other games. Will never happen. Will there be like possible 8 or 10 person content like we saw in GW1 with Underworld and Fissure of Woe, likely. But it won’t be anything like what people think of when it comes to raiding.

I know, it’s a little disheartening. But I can dream right XD either way excited to see the GW2 take on things.

No, it’s not disheartening. It’s refreshing that GW is a game that doesn’t force it’s player base to feel like they have a job to play the game, to run the same 1 or 2 instances 4 hours a night for 4 or 5 nights a week for months on end only to have the gear replaced within 2 days of an expansion coming out.

And for the record, I was in one of the top WoW guilds on Black Dragonflight with quite a few server firsts. I don’t say that to brag because honestly it was nothing to brag about. Raids may be good for games designed around it but GW is not one of those games. For one thing, if they were to bring in WoW style raids, within 1 day we would see forum topics of “Hey, I’m a special snowflake raider and it’s not fair someone can get to 80 and have the same stat gear and skins as I do. You need to make raiding gear different and better!!!!”. And then when the second raid would come out “How dare you not put better stats on this raids gear than on the other one!!! I’ll quit if you don’t treat me special!!!”

That right there is one of the biggest problems with bringing raids here.

They say “we just want hard content” “we just enjoy playing a good challenge”
But the instant they play their harder content and find out it’s not also more rewarding than the stuff being played by the casual scum it becomes "it’s harder it should reward better “why would anyone play it if it doesn’t offer better gear?”
“I need unique skins and better stats so all those peasants know I’m better than they are”

If they were really into it for the challenge it wouldn’t matter what the reward was.
But it’s never about the challenge.

“The short answer is that new content is not going to drive people away from the game.
There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon

Play fr free means free trial for me. If the restrictions are those mentioned by data miners, then it is more of a thing that Rift and WoW has..
I guess its a good idea to let people test the game for free and see if they like it before they pay 50 dollars for it.
Personally I am that type of person and before I buy a game a more then happy to give it a try in a beta or anything similar. if not, I will just watch a bunch of clips of gameplay to make an opinion about it.

If it takes too long to finish (due to wipes) then a “save state” is a great alternative.
Otherwise you’d have to re-start every time, making the learning process very hard. With a “save state” over a week your team could practice the next boss until you get it, instead of doing the entire run from scratch. Save states that last a week aren’t a bad thing.

Arenanet has a pretty good trackrecord when it comes to fighting spammers and hackers (compared to other games). Hopefully Anet goes about this in a smart way. There is no problem with f2p accounts, but they need to have certain restrictions in order to maintain a healthy game. Until you purchase the game you should not be allowed to access the following imo:

1. No TP access at all
2. No daily log in rewards
3. No map chat access
4. No whisper access
5. No LFG access
6. No Ranked PvP access

With those simple restrictions they can enjoy all aspects of the game, but without ruining the economy, community, or experience for others.

Anything less than those restrictions will be a death sentence for this game.

It ‘s funny how people here want to play a MMO, complain about under population on WvW but still hope that no stranger will be allowed to play and interact with them. Come on, just the idea that the population may increase should be a good news. And if the new algorithm is right this will first increase low populated world in WvW where players have basically no fun since there are no fights.
And to be honest I’m not sure that a horde of new players will arrive in the game that fast. At least not after starting zones.

This. 1000x This. Also as others have said with EotM access but no WvWvW access.
I like to think I’m a generally pretty accepting player, but one of the absolute greatest strengths (and reasons I play) Guild Wars 2 is the quality of the community being above average.
I’m all for having new players and giving them access to the game, but without heavy restrictions we’ll see more bad than good introduced to the game through vitriolic behavior and language, gold spamming, inflation, etc.
I’m not the type that would drop a comment like “I’m uninstalling” but depending on how this is handled that could be a very real possibility for me. I absolutely love this game and played Guild Wars off and on since its release to the release of GW2. I like to think I’ve invested a lot in this game and don’t want to see its quality of life decline over something like this that could be handled properly from the start.

We don’t need the populations being artificially inflated by people who didn’t pay for their accounts. That is just going to lead to people filling up slots with free accounts to keep paying customers out, aka, stop the opponent from having real players on the map.

Once the F2P floodgates open you will see the quality of players from those countries who can’t even afford to pay $10. They don’t speak English, they’re extremely rude players that harass people because they feel their country should ‘take over’ the server.

As much as I’d like to just dismiss claims like this as stereotyping…I can’t. Because I’ve seen it happen in other games. It’s, of course, not all of the players from these countries. But there can be a large number of them, as well as English-speakers that are just as disruptive.

I don’t recall seeing a lot of that in Tera when I played for a while earlier this year. Though, chats were still rather bad at times(worse than anything I’ve seen in GW2). So it does seem that phenomenon can be one that doesn’t last. But it certainly does happen to at least some games that make a F2P move.

It was really bad when TERA first went F2P. I picked up the game for $10 the week before it went F2P just to check it out, that first week, it wasn’t all that bad. But THE DAY it went F2P it became flooded with BR’s, flooding chat, harassing anyone speaking in a language other than Portuguese, sending you whispers about how this was “their server now” and you’d find gangs of people with brazilian flags as their guild logo running around kill stealing from anyone NOT using a Brazilian flag guild or with .Br in their name, or all flagging and gang pk’ing people (until level capped non BR’s came by and slaughtered them all (and then they got harassed in tells)). It was a terrible community and made me uninstall. I recently reinstalled and am playing again on a different server and it’s not quite as bad so you might be right about it not being a lasting deterioration of community.

But I for one dread that first month or so of F2P players.

Sounds like Dota 2. The US servers have basically been taken over my south American players. The worst part is they refuse to communicate in English. They grow up with a different culture and it really shows when they play f2p games

“In order to keep the Free Trial enjoyable for everyone, we’ve placed some restrictions on what characters on Trial accounts can do. For example, to minimize gold spamming, Trial characters can only whisper and send mail to people who have added them to their Friends list. Map chat, sales on the Trading Post, Gems, and WvW battlegrounds (excluding the Edge of the Mists) are also restricted.”
