What I’m talking about is when mobs aggro on someone, usually who’s just running around and not fighting, and they get near other players, and mobs peel off onto those other players even though those other players don’t engage either.

This basically lets players train mobs onto other players, whether intentional or not (I’ve experienced and/or seen both).

It’s kind of screwy how it all works and considering most of the game is designed to prevent grief, it ends up being a tool for griefing.

It’s pretty random how aggro works, but I don’t think you’ll have to worry about people luring mobs onto you. If they’re normal mobs you should be able to handle it assuming you’re not afk (and why would you afk in a danger zone?). Plus they only have a certain range they’ll follow a player before giving up and going back. Be thankful that’s there, otherwise you’ll have trolls collecting all the enemies on a map and luring them into towns and safe zones.

Speaking of training, you know whats really funny? Starting a skill challenge fight in a town full of AFKs and then stealthing after the fight starts. Skill challenge NPC will proceed to kill all of the AFKs.

Can’t count how many times others players would run past me dragging a group of mobs. Those mobs then stop chasing them and on their way back to their little home they choose to stop and fight me. I died many times from this while leveling up. Fireheart Rise, NE part of the zone was the worse.

It does appear to behave strangely. I noticed that in a town where there was an NPC that you would brawl with, I would start the event and immediately the NPC would start attacking the bear pet of a Ranger who was further away than me who initiated the encounter. It would take several shots from me before he would focus his attention back on me. Did the event multiple times and same result each time.

It’s flatout kitten if you ask me. I tested it with a friend. He stood aside, let me solo a fat monster. He does no damage, hes further away. So even though I am meleeing this monster, the monster was convinced my friend was more of a threat, as it kept chasing him for no reason.

Rezzing also draws heavy aggro, sometimes you have to try rezzing an NPC to get the champ off the downed person’s back. I know because everytime I tried rezzing an NPC the monster would come after me, then go back to the person previously attacking them.

Interesting that you have this problem, because I have actually used the opposite scenario to my advantage.

What I mean is that I stand there looking at a few mobs that I don’t feel like fighting and suddenly a guy runs by and the mobs all chase him. I then run my way past them all and they totally ignore me (even after they stopped chasing him and returned to their normal spots, they just walked by me).

Guess it is pretty random.

Some boss encounters iv’e found “exploitable” in this regard, the boss will target 1 player and no amount of damage or proximity will break their focus, that player just needs to run around breaking LOS as the boss limps around and eventually dies without ever attacking.

Aggro has a few mechanics I have noticed.

1. Proximity – the closer you are the higher the chance you will attract attention.
2. Stats – stacking toughness tends to make you a higher priority.

There are probably others, including damage dealt, but I can not gauge them with any certainty.

In GW1 aggro never seemed to rely on anything other than possibly proximity.

From what I have seen
The NPC will go after the closest toon, (300 metre radius) who is doing damage (amount of damage does not mean much)
But will switch to
(Anyone rezing)
(Anyone under 40% health)
(Anyone with a shield/toughness for some reason draws more aggo, I guess this is to help player who plays as tanks, but most dungeon runs, we just go as range classes and kite as its easier then have a tank class)

So if you doing 1 attack per second and so are three other players (who are all doing more damage then you) but your health is at 30%, the mob will stay on you.

Useful to know when ‘trying’ to tank. As kiting is so much easier then tanking. If you can shoot behind you while running in a circle, and keep your low health, you can keep the aggro of the mob on you forever why the DPS burn it.

If your range also adds poison or other conditions, its even easier to keep aggro

Also buff/debuff is the same as damage, so kiting and just buffing yourself with quickness etc (as long as you don’t go more then 300 metres from the mob) will also keep it on you.

Invis will break this aggro, but LOS the boss will not (as long as your still within 300m)

Running as a glass elementalist with nearly lowest possible HP and toughness I drew aggro countless of times from guardian and warrior and pretty much whatever else was in the group. Sometimes it’s so annoying, specially in dungeons with ranged mobs where all I can do is spam dodge, buffs, heals and hope I survive long enough that mob dies (or mobs usually, if it was 1, np, whole pack coming on to me to show me their love…yarr, 1 stun/immobilise and bye bye squishy). Random is random, sometimes mobs stick on the guardian like glue. And idk, it doesn’t matter if my HP is low or full. Hell, even bosses luvs the low toughness and don’t give up till I’m downed lotsa times.
