So heavy classes could wear leather and medium classes could wear cloth etc.

It would certainly open up some options for the player base.

Edit: I mean in terms of looks, stats remain as they are

Do you mean in terms of looks or in terms of armor class? Both have problems.

The former has the problem that Anet purposely wants scholars, adventurers and soldiers to be visually distinct.

The latter has the problem that everyone will wear heavy armor because it simply is the best and no one has a reason not to. At the same time the professions are all balanced around their current armor class. They would have to rebalanced. After that rebalancing, armor would basically have ceased to be a relevant factor.

Anet purposely wants scholars, adventurers and soldiers to be visually distinct.

While I don’t disagree with most of what you said (there are definitely a multitude of issues with either option), the quoted statement isn’t necessarily true anymore.

Yes, anet originally wanted the 3 tiers to be visually recognizable for “reasons.” Which was understandable. However, with the change over to outfits that are usable in combat, that statement pretty much got blown out of the water.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

I don’t think there would be a sensible way to balance it.

It works in other games because each armour type has drawbacks which mean that while in theory any character can wear any armour it’s usually not practical. For example heavy armour is, well, heavy so you need high strength to be able to wear it and it limits your movement a lot which makes it impractical for classes which need high dexterity.

Meanwhile cloth armour is very light and easy to move in but you can’t go into melee range because a sword would go right through it, and you.

As you can probably tell from the terminology involved this would require a complete re-work of the way stats work to be applied to this game. Especially since characters get most of their stat customisation from their armour.

I would love to be able to mix and match just the skins but apparently that’s not possible because the invisible models they’re built around are different for the 3 armour weights. This is most noticeable by the waistline being in a different place for each armour weight. Basically it would cause horrible clipping a lot of the time.

I disagree, everyone already runs around in various plate armor designs from outfits, so there really is no need for class armor types anymore when it comes to appearance.

Also, I’m pretty sure the OP is only talking about visual appearance and being able to apply skin unlocks of any armor type. This should happen ASAP, as personally, I love the medium armor appearance yet find most of the light armor appearance to be hideous.

Since the OP’s edit clearly states were only discussing looks – Id be all for this. As mentioned Outfits mean that a light can run around in plate armor and vice versa. It’d open up so many more armor combinations for everyone – people will winge about clipping but this happens enough as it is when you mix armor sets and its just something you have to accept if you want to mix n match.

Unless I’m mistaken, the only difference among the armor types is their armor rating. Balancing would simply mean adding the base armor rating to the base armor of the profession and remove it from the gear itself.

It’s an ill-conceived design decision based on mechanics this game lacks, which is basically what you said. Also as another poster pointed out, outfits contradict this entire reasoning behind restricting armor types-hell even having armor types. I see no reason beyond a contrived attempt at ‘giving the game character’ for not releasing the weight restrictions.

I mean, it’s the current year-it’s 2016!

Well, it would be awesome of course but a-net thinks they need to keep the dog(player) on a short leash, because hey, we’re so stupid that we can’t even fix clipping issues ourselves during our own costume creation, right? I bet all who say no to more options think that way about themselves.

All well and good, but there are technical limitations as to why they can’t “lift” the restrictions. They’d have to redo a major component of the game code in order to do this, which would not be financially beneficial for them

Cause its not like armor skins of the same weight class which were designed to go together dont already clip a lot.

I see no real down side to removing the restriction on skins and there are some NPCs in the world who already mix and match different armor types. More freedom to the player in terms of customization isnt a bad thing.

Armour is an important mechanic of the game. It allows heavy armoured-professions to be able to take more of a punch but be lacking in other areas. If armour restrictions were removed, there would be less unique things about each profession and would make the game feel more cookie-cutter. The only way I could see this work effectively is if ANET introduced specs which allowed Elementalists to tank in heavy armour. Beside that, it’s purely cosmetic and outfits are the solution (not the best solution to your problem, but a solution nonetheless).

Lotro did this a long time ago…there was a time when your cosmetic armor was limited to the weight designated to your class, but that was changed a few years after release. If a dated game like that can do it, I have faith that this one can. When entering the PvP area characters reverted to their base armor and the skins were not visible.

Although their cosmetic system is superior to GW2 so perhaps it is easier for a game created in 2007 to do this and not one created in 2012. You could create an outfit (I think you got 2 for free then pay for each additional outfit slot). You can set up several outfits and activate them as you wish, without constantly using transmutation charges.

I think I get what you mean – because medium have bum skirts on there chest armor and light have bum skirts on their leg armor?

I’ve noticed that if there’s is a conflict between chest armor and gloves that the gloves get cropped to make it work – I imagine that something similar would be introduced.

I think I like this idea because it solves some of those issues people (myself included) have with no pants for light and too many medium trench coats for medium

IIRC – TESO is another game that lets you wear any armor weight (although stats are included – which this post isnt about)

Allowing people to transmute all armor skins onto themselves regardless of profession seems silly to me, like the skins themselves are being forced onto certain identities instead of being designed around them.

I’m tired of trench coats for adventurer professions too, I’d like some leathery fighter straps for soldier professions myself, and some battlemage plates for the scholar professions sounds like a solid idea. But personally I’d want those armor sets designed with the aesthetic/design of adventurers, scholars, and soldiers in mind.

I’ve heard the number of armor sets from the gemstore greatly outnumber those earned in-game, same for weapons, and while I prefer ArenaNet to design armor sets that branch out of the exhausted concepts (trench coats for medium, solid metal plates for heavy, skimpy fabric for light) I doubt they’ll really up the ante on releasing armor sets earned for in-game effort or release gemstore armor sets without catering to the “Look at me, I’m wearing a Christmas tree for armor!” crowd.

Something about the frilly starter skirt for scholar professions with the Plated Boots skin and the Heavy Plate Chestguard skin looks so disrespectful and forced when it comes to immersion, like they really REALLY don’t belong together. I’m sure everyone is an experienced fashionista that can work miracles, but it feels forced, especially if combat stats do not carry over— not that I want them to, but still.

of course we would all prefer to have more variety in each armor class so we don’t have to mix and match with other armor weights, but I doubt we will get that many more options considering lately all they release are costumes.
So this is more of a patch solution to the lack of armor variety.
