Imagine if legendaries...
The game is meant to be kitten friendly, thus you got Legendaries that are easy to obtain.
No skill or brain functions required.
Imagine if legendaries were gotten right from the very beginning. Imagine it would take high skill in pvp wvw and pve to attain a legendary. Imagine the achievements you needed to get the legendary was so great it would be compared to some of the hardest titles to get in game. Imagine if legendaries were actually legendaries.
If that was the case legendaries would be so legendary now that you won’t see everyone running around with one. Since people wouldn’t have gotten a taste of having a legendary yet they wouldn’t complain about the difficulty of getting one, it would have been the ultimate goal to work towards. Legendary armor in raids would now be a huge welcome celebrated by everyone because legendaries would be finally be obtainable as a loot reward! The devs would be worshipped for bringing in raids which gave such awesome rewards!
But in our case we now have people feeling so entitled to legendaries that any form of effort put into content that they don’t like warrants a complain. Just imagine….
Imagine that 1 rare guy with an eternity and be like wow dude you really beat the game! Instead of omg legendary effects are causing my fps to lag… Can I have an option to turn them off.
Imagine how different gw2 would have turned out!
Imagine all the useless t6 mats and precursors that would have dropped since launch and nobody needs because only a few will be able to craft a legendary.
Bloin – Running around, tagging Keeps, getting whack on Scoobie Snacks.
If you dangle the carrot so far in front of the donkey they can’t see it you’re not going to get anywhere very fast.
The devs would be worshipped for bringing in raids which gave such awesome rewards!
By the same 1-10% of people who legendaries would be restricted to in your vision?
I Guess it depends on what you want legendaries to be. Don’t get me wrong I’m not one of those people who have multiple legendaries, in fact I only have 1 the predator which my Friend got the precursor for me. In my opinion the current legendaries was a gw2 mistake, before launch the devs said that legendaries would truly be legendary but in actual fact it is only a symbol of gold. Before the launch of gw2 I thought legendaries would be account bound but was dead wrong. Is it really wrong for me to believe that the term legendaries and how the devs described them before launch wasn’t meant to be obtainable through mere gold? That’s why I’m fully supporting the new crafting method for precursors and it being account bound. I might even go a step further to say I hoped the devs would make the process more challenging, but than some people might think it is way to hard.
IMO precursors were nvr meant to drop out of nowhere to random strangers because of rng, precursors are the weapon you upgrade to a legendary. You aren’t supposed to hit the jackpot and find a million dollars while walking on the street the same way you aren’t supposed to for precursors in game.
Maybe you guys view legendaries differently from me. The true legendary I want when I wield it is the memory of my journey making it. Not just a memory of me scrounging up gold by selling useless mats and saving every bit of gold I got from dungeons and other places.
The memory of the ideal legendary I wield would capture the memory of me hitting rank 80 in pvp or getting that champ title for the classes I really want, or the times I played rank with my pvp guild and winning almost every battle in a row. The memory of the last fractal I did with my friends and guild when I hit fractal 50 after wiping a couple of times. The 1st time I went into Arah and wiped at lupi with my group more times than I can count and than finally defeating him, and after that getting better to soloing him. Or the memory of countless hours in wvw protecting dolyaks and forts, duelling in the jumping puzzle area, and attempting the jumping puzzle myself , the feeling of accomplishment when you finally storm the main castle in the middle of the battlegrounds. Those are what I wish my legendary would’ve captured. My legendary wouldn’t just be another Shiny expensive skin it would be the accumulated wealth of my experiences in gw2. I dunno about you guys but that’s what I expected legendaries to be before the launch of gw2 when they first announced it.
Woah woah woah hold the phone! Why just raids? I know you mentioned PvP but there should be a legendary armor set released for the following criteria:
1.Win ranked major tournaments with all three classes of your armor class X amount of times. Like thief unlocks boots and shoulders, ranger unlocks torso and helmet, while engineer unlocks gloves and pants for example. Or the entire set at the same time after clearing the final hurdle.
2.Maintaining a certain win-loss ratio.
3.Obtaining relevant ranked dueling records for each.
4.Each class must be killed X number of times by said character.
I say the legendary PvP medium armor should look like the stalwart but have effects (they’d be dyable unlike the glowing achievement chest gloves) and like a Razer Naga Epic slowly change colors based off the dyes you input…wait, there’d be some interface hurdles there, maybe just keep the effects one uniform color then ^_^
Also, make PvP armors only obtainable in PvP! We don’t want PvE posers running around in PvP skins do we?
- duelling in the jumping puzzle area, and attempting the jumping puzzle myself*
Oh so much this! You don’t know fun until you’re kicked or gusted off a small platform while doing the same to others. Shamans (WoW equivalent to Engineers roughly) made Eye of the Storm very fun (I typically hated that battleground though)
I had some fun obtaining my legendary though (such as the above mentioned jumping puzzle dueling) and even carried some level 50’s in an explorable mode. People were asking me if we should kick him and I said no, any group of 80s with all those extra exotic stats can clear an explorable, but the true test of skill comes from the ability to carry. Also, those hammer knights were fun we need more content like Twilight Arbor.

Ofc that’s just what I like doing, but I have also met many friendly people who prefer doing other things like talking in lions arch or doing champ trains. Or playing the tp. People who just like to have fun and help others and doing jumping puzzles all day or finding weird bugs in gw2. I’m not saying they don’t deserve a legendary but if gw2 had gotten legendaries right from the start maybe there could’ve been special legendaries for people like them. Maybe there would be a legendary for socialising (having many friends and constantly partying up) or maybe a legendary for leadership (wvw commanders or people who like to lead dungeons for example) legendaries for soloist (people who like to solo content whether it is group content or not) or maybe legendaries for just being helpful (maybe through some form of player recommendation, let’s say you felt this guy helped you a lot you could give him/her a thumbs up which would add to his helpful legendary progress). I mean legendaries should be the weapon the captures your fun times in gw2 whether you are a casual player, hardcore player, pvper, pver, or just a person who likes to socialise and help. Maybe there would also be an ultimate legendary where you could craft all of them together once you are able to obtain them all. All I’m saying is that legendaries could’ve been so much more than just a gold grind.

Finally someone who gets me:D
maybe a legendary for leadership
I really love that idea…but how do you quantify it? I already mentioned the perfect one sometime ago: the red lion greatsword. It meets all the criteria:
1.It’s red, the color of leadership.
2.Has translucent lion swipes with each swing and sometimes a roar and lions are the animals of leadership.
3.It’s a greatsword, a weapon of leaders.
4.Footsteps would be red lion footprints.
5.Sword itself would be gold and red with a red maned lion’s face seen like looking out a window similar to Dawn or Twilight.
I don’t agree that legendaries should be accessible to the casual player since that would defeat their purpose. Somethings should be gated but still obtainable with the proper level of dedication.
I don’t have a Legendary. Never had a precursor drop for me, but I’m not too worried about it, if I desperately wanted one I’d have picked it up on the Trading Post. Legendaries should have been account bound from day one because the fact that you can buy one on the Trading Post kind of makes it less than Legendary to me.
But in our case we now have people feeling so entitled to legendaries that any form of effort put into content that they don’t like warrants a complain. Just imagine….

Not sure who you are directing this thread at… most people are fine with the current amount of effort that go into legendaries. I guess you seem to want so much effort required that there are only a handful of people per server with one, but this isnt a pure pvp game, and legendaries being accessible to everyone without pvp is the only way this games economy could possibly work.
Maybe in the future you want the next set of legendaries (after these new HOT ones) to be pvp only? If thats what your asking thats not a bad idea, otherwise no thanks.

Haha the design of the leadership legendary would be up to Anet and personal taste, but I can think of a few ways to obtain it:D for example to have the leadership legendary you have got to maybe be a wvw commander in wvw? It’s cost 100 gold nothing as absurd as the prices are nowXD hmm and maybe if people think you are a good leader they should get an option to sort of up vote you as a good leader? Kinda like the way likes and dislikes work on YouTube. What defines a great leader is the people he/she leads right? Thus I think it would be really cool if there was more community bonding in this where people could up vote other players in different areas of the game. For example you might need /1000 votes as a wvw commander as one of the criterion a to craft a leadership legendary and maybe another few votes in other leadership aspects of the game (ranked pvp, pve etc) or maybe it can all come together as one as leadership quality crosses play style boundaries anyways, if you can lead you can lead. I think the up vote system would really be cool. It could also be implemented for helpful legendaries like people can up vote you for being helpful haha. I’m not sure how it would work it’s just a random idea. Ofc for people who don’t really like human interaction of soloing there would also be the categories for you.
You might ask than wouldn’t you need a ton of different legendary skins? I can suggest that maybe there will only be 1 skin per weapon but in different Colors for example leadership legendary twilight would be red in Color etc. Ofc it doesn’t have to be twilight it’s just an example.

Where did I mention that I want legendaries to be for pvp only? I’m also not pushing forward the idea of legendaries being limited to a small group of people. Im just saying everyone can have a legendary but it must be a representation of their experiences and accomplishments in the game. Take example fractal skins if I see someone with fractal skins I know he/she runs fractals. But for the current legendaries now they are meaningless except for being a shiny skin, when I see someone with a legendary I dunno if he grinded his gold, bought his gold, crafted it himself or just bought it straight off the tp. I know some people might have experienced special cases in the way they got their legendary but it is just not visible. This thread is just about how legendaries could’ve (in my opinion) be done right with personality and identity or your time in gw2, instead of just being a gold sink for players and a shiny skin. I’m not trying to make it an official suggestion but instead just sharing my thoughts on the term ‘legendary’ weapon.
That is why you see so 2 sides of players complaining now about legendary armor. Gw2 has so far made legendary armor only obtainable through raid rewards. Which lead to many people complaining that there should be other methods of obtaining them, but if you look at it from raiders perspective it would be a bad idea because legendary armor would no longer be a raid exclusive thing which they can show for doing raids. As you can see here both sides want legendary armor. So my suggestion is just make the legendary armors have identity by maybe making them a diff Color or tinge when you obtain them through other various methods. That way when people see your legendary they will know what you have done to get them instead of it just being generalised as legendary armor. Something like how the ascended weapons have diff Colors now.

If you dangle the carrot so far in front of the donkey they can’t see it you’re not going to get anywhere very fast.
I can’t say it better than that.
People complain about legendaries being too common, but they’re still indisputably some of the most sought-after weapons in the game. A large chunk of the economy seems to revolve around them, and they’re a very popular long-term goal for players, even before HoT makes getting a precursor more interesting.

I’m not complaining that legendaries are too common, I’m just saying they lack identity. And I’m not referring to changes I want now or later, I’m just saying what if legendaries had been different from the beginning. This is not meant to be a hate thread on legendaries or me complaining about it. Hence the title imagine…

Really? That’s part of the impression I got from your original post:

I agree that legendaries could be more epic in their acquisition, and I’m hoping HoT will finally make that happen. What I wouldn’t want, however, is for legendaries to have been so difficult and rare that when you see one, you’re like “OH, WOW, LOOK AT THAT DUDE, WOW,” which is the impression I’m getting from what I’m quoting.
As someone without a legendary, I don’t think they’re too common. The players you see a lot are likely to be heavy players, and heavy players are the ones most likely to use high-end weapons, armor, dye, etc., making them seem common.
Haha that was just my version of a legendary that I personally want. But we can have the best of both worlds can’t we? We can have the WOW that legendary but acquired through diff means, for example someone who thinks raids are hard will come by another with a raid legendary and say WOW that raid legendary, and another guy who think jumping puzzles are hard will come by a jumping puzzle legendary and say WOW that jumping puzzle legendary. Everyone is good at something in the game right? Haha if they are good enough in that area they should be recognised and have people saying WOW at them be it raids jumping puzzles pvp living story wvw world bosses crafting or just stoning. Maybe a stoner’s legendary for Afking a certain number of hours, gotta be ridiculously Long though if not everyone could get it, people would say WOW you got the stoner legendary you must be a legendary stoner.
Well, the amount of gold I paid for my first one was LEGENDARY.
Crystal Desert
I’d imagine titles will fill this void for uber-elitism and/or hierarchical in-game status as they eventually did in GW1.
GWAMM 2 or some-such will be introduced at some stage I’m sure.
Well, the amount of gold I paid for my first one was LEGENDARY.
Lol true dat!
