I’ve had this idea since I started playing and wanted it to share it with the community (and hopefully with the developers).
So I know I’m not the only player who really likes to modify the appearance of their character in Guild Wars 2. There are popular sites and subreddits made to show the look of your character. People love the options, so many armor and weapon skins to choose from. But here’s the problem; you can only pretty much do one outfit for your character (not talking about the outfits sold in the store) unless you wanna spend tons of transmutation charges when you wanna change your look. And who wants to grind 2-3 or more armor sets to not spend charges?
I’ve been thinking for a way this could be changed and I think I have a really solid suggestion. There should be wardrobe slots in the game. Players would enter wardrobe like they do now but instead of seeing the equipment you have on, you would see a selection of numbered tabs (Wardrobe 1, Wardrobe 2 etc.) Clicking a tab, for example Wardrobe 1, would show you the equipment you have on that current wardrobe slot. This is when the transmutation charges are consumed; you use a charge to change the appearance of the equipment in Wardrobe 1, in the similar fashion you do now. You could also use the store bought outfits in this slots.
This would be a great addition on Anet’s part also, since they could sell these wardrobe slots in the Gem Store (like they do character slots). And since there would be generally more transmutation charges consumed I think the sales of those would rocket aswell. I know for sure that me and majority of the players I play with would definitely buy at least a few of these slots.
I really want to make a lot of different looks for my main character but with the current system I end up collecting skins and customizing my alts that I barely play. Think of all the possibilities this would add to the game, for example a guild or group outfit.
Let me know what you guys think of this idea and give out suggestions. I do now know if this has been posted before but even if it has at least it is up for discussion again.

Excellent idea. If we ever do get this feature it will probably be pretty pricey, and on a per-character basis (as with bag slots) but well worth getting.

This pops up from time to time but so far, it hasn’t gained a whole lot of traction.

Here’s another bump anyway.

Yeah, this is great idea. Because game is made around how much money you can spend on look better then on equipment. There is a reason why people call game Fashion Wars and I as many other players wants to look fabulous. This is one more way to ease people to change their appearance and to spend more in game gold and real money on game because they will see the result before they “must” buy it to make combinations of fashion ideas.

It’s weird how we have entire communities built around character customization yet these topics rarely get any replies. Are most players satisfied with the current status? Have we had any official word on we can look forward to seeing anything close to this?

I’m guessing you folks are new to the game. A few months maybe, possibly up to a year or so?
You see I can guess this because at one time the wardrobe system as they call it, did not exist. We started out with a very clunky system of armor and what was called Town Clothes. They were two seperate tabs if you will. Town Clothes could be switched to out of combat but as soon as you used a skill or took damage from any source including falling, you would revert to your armor set. It was annoying but we made it work because we had five slots for town clothes to fill; boots, legs, gloves, chest and head. Very much like our armor pieces.

They could even be mixed and matched at will and several different pieces could be used to obtain totally different looks. Back then we had transmutation stones. They could be earned a few at a time for each map completion. Those were stones for armor up to level 79 and then there were special stones for armor rated level 80. Those were only found on the gemstore…but for about the same price. It was a fun time as people could have lower level toons and farm stones fairly easily if they wanted to change. Which they did all the time. Of course the downside to this system was inventory space. Transmuted armor was soulbound unless you did it to a white piece.

Then the wardrobe system came into being…and there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth. All of the town clothes were turned into either outfits or tonics, the majority of them tonics. People left in droves over this change. All role players, but still…people who regularly spent a small amount of money in the gemstore.

Okay maybe not in droves, but I knew people in game who were upset over the change despite the positive side to it. Some of them left. I was nearly one of them. I didn’t want to like the new system, after all how can taking options away be a good thing? I got used to it I guess…I just haven’t spent any real money on gems ever since.

TLDR: The system used to allow more customization; they took it away. They’ll never change it unless they can make a ton of money on it.

As for your idea: I see what you are suggesting, however I don’t want the looks to be tied to something like a tab that cannot be changed once set…what if I only want to change one piece? Also…earning charges isn’t as daunting a task as you think. Of course maybe you don’t have a character slot for it so I understand. Many players have a “charge runner” slot in which they make a new toon and run around the five racial cities to earn the charges for map completion.

Though I do like it for the idea of having a set look that you can swap to immediately, like a Guild Uniform or your “Commander gear” for showing off all of your most hard earned pieces.
I miss the old system from GW…we had four weapon sets we could swap at any time. I even recall the reasons that the armor set was taken off of those tabs early in beta. It seems no one left at Anet remembers or even cares. After 10 years we still can’t sit in chairs.
