Recently, I was running around LA to see the new happenings with this latest patch. When I came upon Deverol Island, I heard an NPC conversation that talked about a new Chapel coming soon.

Chapels are for weddings. This leads me to speculate that we’ll finally be able to have weddings in game! What a great boon for the RP community should this happen. Can you imagine you and your soulmate, surrounded by 100 of your guildies cheering you on as you tie the knot?

But if not player weddings, perhaps NPCs will have some romantic storylines in upcoming Living Story releases? Kas and Jory finally dedicating their lives to each other? How about Rox and Braham confessing their love? Heck, we could even have a Braham and Taimi storyline too, seeing how much they care for each other. The sky’s the limit!

What do you guys think? Does the upcoming Chapel sound like a great idea or what???

In GW2, Trading Post plays you!

although perhaps another attack on LA in which the chapel blows up might be more exciting for a living story

Anet could be teasing us with their upcoming simulation game, Guild Life. “What happens after the hero comes home, and people get real?”

But yeah, in-game weddings would be a lot less complicated than programming for mounts.

Its there for when mordy kills us all…

Anyways, I doubt it will be for weddings. Just a cosmetic feature in the game which players could choose to use with their game play type.

They should allow us to decorate our home instances/guild halls before weddings. RP’ers will at least be able to hold their own weddings with their guilds this way, and carry on buying the name change to have the same last name.

Although these little features are quite nice, Anet should have bigger priorities on their list to please the majority of the community.

While I’m not against in-game weddings, it’s a bit of a stretch to assume that the chapel’s there for that purpose. Three of the five playable races are non-religious, with weddings being somewhat of a novelty. A social construct deemed unecessary for various reasons.

I expect it’ll be a church to the Six, perhaps with shrines to the Spirits too, if Magnus got a say. Something for culture and flavour.

It would not be the first game with weddings. ESO has weddings. For me, the most important thing would be housing. I do have a guild, so guild halls would be nice but those housing instances really are bad.

I don’t believe we should have activateable marriages and such that trigger an event. But I do believe a chapel, for all intended purposes, funerals, weddings and anything else you want to do there could be nice for the RolePlaying community. I think it would be a great addition for them. They only need a building, and the rest they bring themselves.

When you have two people playing, it becomes alot harder to manage your loot, collectibles, money and other possessions. Playing solo is far easier, when you get something you only have to worry about getting it for yourself, not getting a second copy, and never sharing it or having to debate over what to do with it.

Playing as a pair is a lot more involved than most people realize. That is why marriage systems exist, to ease that burden with the “whats yours is mine” concept and vice versa. Granted, they have their risks, just like anything.

The bottom line is someone who plays solo will likely be unable to understand.

Let me put this in a more simple way. When you sell all of your collectibles on the trading post, how much time does it take? A long time, I bet. And you no doubt encounter the “selling error” that throttles sell attempts to stop bots.

Now imagine the time and effort taken and then multiply it by two. And that is just a mild example of what managing so many resources is like.

“A chapel is a religious place of fellowship, prayer and worship”

Could be NPC weddings.
Could be funerals.
Could just be an all purpose place to commune with the assorted gods / spirits in the game that is intended to be non-race specific (an ‘all are welcome’ sort of thing).

But I don’t think we’re looking at possible player char weddings. Could be wrong, but I sure hope not. I actually would prefer to not have that drama in this game.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

I thought a chapel was a small church, somewhere between a church/temple etc. and a shrine. So it could be used for any/all religious functions.

As for marriage I’ve never entirely understood why this needs to be built into the game to be possible. Ultima Online had no marriage mechanics and a lot of player marriages. My sister (who was mainly an armourer) even had a wedding-planning side business with a friend.

Just get together with some friends, pick an appropriate location and some nice clothes, make up a ceremony and get going. Maybe buy or craft each other rings, or pick another object to exchange. And of course remember supplies for the party afterwards.

Guess lore isn’t a big deal to most RPers these days.

Marriage as a concept is something that’s not present in all Tyrian societies. Religion as a concept is something that is outright rejected in some Tyrian societies. A wedding chapel would be a bizarre novelty for these people. At best.

Considering the way Anet like to ground everything in lore (waypoints, WvW), I’d expect the new chapel to be something or cultural flavour or to feature in a the story somehow. It could be a chapel for the Zaishen Order, who’ve previously had a presence in LA. It could be a new cult HQ. I doubt it’ll be just a glorified registry office though,

It was stated in the novel Sea of Sorrows that there was a chapel on an island away form LA because they were concerned how the other races would react it being in LA. It turned out that all the races actually helped build it. Well it is possible that the chapel was destroyed either during the karka attack or Scarlett’s attack so it is possible that they are rebuilding it inside LA.

I don’t care if we have it or not, but I can admit the utility of in-game marriage is nice. If you don’t want to wed another player, you could have your alt account marry your main. I believe in most games marriage allows two players to share account bound items and currency, a major convenience for alt accounts or real life couples and friends who game together.

I recall the final fantasy mmo has weddings. That’s an option, if that’s your thing.

They do, and it’s not gender restricted. You also get a special mount for both players, wedding outfits, and a ring that teleports you to your partner.

Personally I never understood why the GW2 community is so against in-game marriage.

At least for ff14, it really is extremely helpful in certain areas. For example there are these called hunts that spawns varied “ranked” boss monsters, sometimes you miss them because of loading times + travel time as the mobs spawn randomly in set windows and not everyone is willing to wait long. Think world bosses but less predictable.

If you’re partner is there already however, you can click the ring and go directly to them, skipping travel time and probably loading quicker as most people would be porting to the nearest outpost.

Also, the ring can be used for glamour purposes (accessories show up on your character unless hidden by armor).

Only down side sadly is it can only be used every 30 minutes.

Oh totally it’s super helpful. But yeah GW2 could totally do what final fantasy 14 does just without the mount.

The basis is the couple do some quests together that involve a lot of walking, then obtain the ring and wedding outfits. Then they schedule a time, give out invites to people they want to show up, then pick the ceremony details (music, color scheme of decorations, cut scenes that play etc etc). Then on that date it goes down, couple gets their mount and the guests get their own minion (basically a mini)

It’s something I think would make RPers and non-RPers alike happy.

When I saw it was going to be a chapel, weddings didn’t come to my mind at all. Even though I’ve been in many RP weddings in many games and helped to organize quite a few of them, my mind went to other religious needs for chapels in a war-devastated city. Maybe part of that is that I’ve RP’d the Deverol house as a hospital in the past — after the initial karka invasion, for instance, when my character was mangled by a rolling karka.

I guess we’ll see the architectural design. If it’s a small room with little statues in niches around the walls, that’s not great for wedding rites with more than a few participants. If it’s larger scale with areas devoted to all the racial variations of faith, and has a good amount of floor space, that could work better.

Well firstly that introduces the usually nonsense around homosexual relationships (but I think ANet has already taken a strong pro stance here so probably not a problem), then there’s the question of… how and why? I mean what would be the benefit of a in-game marriage system as apposed to a couple of RPers getting together and doing their own marriage thing? And if they did implement it, well that’s a very RP kinda thing and GW2 hasn’t been to RP friendly as far as I know.

Or perhaps it was just a bit of dialogue meant to increase player immersion into the daily lives of the citizens of Lion’s Arch?

Especially in the trying times that these NPCs have to live through, I’m sure the many human residents would like a chapel where they can peacefully pray to Dwayna for good health, Melandru for a good harvest, Grenth for the souls of those they’ve lost, Balthazar for courage, Lyssa for the inspiration to rebuild, and Kormir for the ability to body-block your allies— I mean a peaceful future.

When people hear the word “Chapel”, the first things a majority will think of is “Church” and “Wedding” because they are positive images. “Death” or “Funeral” is far low on the list, as that’s a more negative term. It’s like when you look at a cute quaggan. The first thing you think is “love” or “I want to hug it”.

As for wedding mechanics, why are some people so against it? I could understand the pushback if we were discussing solely homosexual weddings, as that’s a hot topic in and of itself. But weddings in general aren’t controversial. All religions have some type of union. I’m positive that each and every country that GW2 is played in has marriage.

In GW2, Trading Post plays you!
