In game beliefs
See it like this, Tyria != the real world. In Tyria gods are very important to the human race, not believing in them is out of the question. I know it’s very popular to get and do whatever you want in this century, but I really don’t agree with it.
Don’t get me wrong I get the mechanics behind it. However I just think it would be interesting to have a human who forsook the gods or maybe a char who believes. Especially since some have pretty much abandoned them in game.
the gods are real so i don’t really see not believing in them as an option
i think what you mean to say is that you dont want to worship any of the known gods
Lore-wise, the human gods not only exist, they used to interact with the humans.
What happens is that they don’t interfere with the humanity for over 250 years and nowadays some humans are starting to lose hope that it is worth to pray for them, but not that they exist.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)
yup m y brother didn’t roll a human cuz he had to believe in one of their gods and he didn’t want to
Also once you kill a god or they kill one another it Changes perspective. Kormir was mortal for example.
Just because people say a certain god blessed you at birth doesn’t mean you have to believe it. The game’s not making your character follow a particular god; that creation choice has zero impact on any PS step or NPC reaction that I’ve ever seen.
My main was Lyssa all the way, and quite devoted to Her (Them?). But he had a huge crisis of faith after LA burned, melodramatically declared he was at war with the Gods, and refuses to pray to or swear by them any more. All in RP, springboarding off game events without the game ever enforcing Lyssasism on him.
Either you roll with it or you become a cat.
your choice.
Live on the razor’s edge.

I used to think (build op, pls nerf) like you, but then I took a nerf to the knee.
Asurans believe in the great alchemy or whatever too. Very vague. I just find it kind of limiting for humans, is all I am saying. It does effect your personal story and abilities though, so I understand why its there. Just saying maybe there should be more options.
Clarify
As far as abilities go your choice does not matter but you have abilities based on specific deities is all I am saying.

Neither of these things is true. The choice you make for which god you worship has no legitimate impact on your character, nor the game, in any meaningful way.
The only significance that has is on the presence of a priest of your specific god somewhere in one of the first two chapters. I don’t even know where I never saw this person for any of my human playthroughs.
All humans have the same god based skills regardless of who they worship, and you don’t have to take them if you don’t want to.

Actually, far as I know, it has no tangible impact on the personal story or your gameplay. It’s just a choice you can make. A callback to the GW1 players who rolled a human, more than anything, or to the new players who wanna learn a bit more about the lore.
In the end, though, it’s something you can ultimately ignore.
EDIT: Kal beat me to it.
How does it affect your PS and abilities? All humans get the exact same racial utilities (Grenth, Melandru, and Balthazar mainly, with some prayers to Lyssa and the like). Nothing in any PS changes based on your God selection when you make the character. Well, maybe somewhere there’s a line like “I can see why Melandru favors you,” but if so I don’t recall seeing it or it having any impact.
It’s a purely cosmetic choice for those who want to use it for RP purposes as far as I can tell.

I truly fail to see why the fact that the gods interacted with humans would have to cause anyone to believe that they exist. After all, you can be a US senator and not believe in global warming.

Has global warming ever had a conversation with anyone? This is the difference between a concept and a tangible thing. The gods of Tyria are tangible, or were when they actually hung around. Global Warming is a concept that is difficult for some people to understand, because it’s not tangible.

I’m pretty sure they forgot the “/s”.
If you want to roleplay as something other than the norm than just do that. No one else but you will see what human god you chose at character creation.
I pray to the spirits of the wild…but they rarely answer.

If I choose to believe that you are not real, then there is nothing whatsoever that you can do about it. Conversely, nobody denies the existence of war, justice or love, despite not being tangible. Food for thought
If my character says something positive about her deities, then she is just paying lip service because that is what her society expects.
Just like most christians in the real world.
;)

For all you know I could be a computer program, I’m tangible to me, but not you. It’s still a silly argument. War is very tangible, very very tangible. And people absolutely deny the existence of justice and love.

Owie ouch. XD
But I guess that makes the Charr even more interesting to me. They blew up their gods with tanks. They feel like they should be on a heavy metal cover. =P

Yes, I know. I was saying it’s a callback to GW1 players who decided to roll a human in GW2.
Just because it’s a known fact that the human gods exist (or at least used to exist) doesn’t mean all humans would worship them.
A lot of things are known to exist in Tyria, including many beings more powerful than humans which other races/groups worship, among them the norn spirits of the wild, the Pale Tree and the Dream, the Elder Dragons, the destroyers, the sun, various elemental forces. If humans don’t worship all of those then simply saying the gods are known to exist doesn’t mean they should worship them.
In fact having irrefutable proof that their gods existed was part of what caused the charr to stop worshipping gods. I think it was mainly the fact that they could be killed by humans but realising that first the titans and then the destroyers were real, physical, living beings was a big part of that.

The OP isn’t talking about worshipping them though, they are talking about believing in them. Nobody has to worship the gods, but when it comes to the GW2 universe, you might as well doubt the existence of trees, swords, Quaggan, and literally everything else if you’re going to “not believe in the gods”. There’s nothing to not believeabout them, since they are literally there. This is, of course, completely different from the real world, where it’s easy to doubt the existence of any of Earth’s gods, but that’s because they don’t heal you when you press 7.

You could play him like this guy. He’s been forced against his will to serve the goddess of death, but he doesn’t believe that the gods are actually gods. He just believes that they are very powerful creatures who are in the long run just as petty as any other creature in the universe.
The human gods of Tyria could be seen this way too. Essentially they are just extremely powerful entities who can be brought down with the right amount of effort.

I meant worship too. Look at the dragons. Svanir worship them as gods.
