As the title of the thread says, it’s just my opinion.

While I’m very much looking forward to the big feature patch in April, and as much as I enjoyed the improvement of the living story, it’s been a year and a half now. While some zones have gone through minor changes, they’re relatively still the same zones.

The game needs something new and fresh to look at. I personally feel that the game is getting quite stale at this point. I’d be curious as to what others thoughts are on this. To prevent a lock, please keep it civil.

In my opinion, an expansion must hit in 2014.

Has there been an announcement that the ‘Big Feature’ patch is being released in April? I must have missed it. I would love to see some confirmation. =)

An expansion is only needed to advertise a feeling of something new. Anything an expansion can do could be done through the living story.

With their goal of creating a constant, low curve vertical progression, I wouldn’t expect an expansion for another year at least (2 more likely) because they’ll eventually need to add something new (in terms of VP). Both increasing the level cap and adding a new tier of gear are known elements that could be an expansion. Assuming the last progression CDI didn’t change their goal, an expansion now would simply be too soon, because it would cause them to lose their chance to easily reset progression. If they did however, it would be too soon after the introduction of ascended gear, which isn’t even fully rolled out yet, and people would complain.

If they don’t add required progression in some form, meaning the expansion would be purely cosmetic, it would anger less people, but less people would also buy it. In comparison, a vertical progression expansion is required to keep up. Gw1 used new skills as their form of progression, which opened new possibilities and more powerful builds, making it a requirement. Gw2 could do the same by locking new weapons, utilities and even traits, removing the need for gear or level progression, though it will seem odd.

In general, an expansion will cause less people to participate in the living story because not everyone will buy it, especially if it’s only cosmetic. One thing they kept saying was that they didn’t want to split up the player base, which is something they had problems with from Gw1. This is one reason why they’ll probably release new zones through the living story and either skip expansions or rarely have them.

No, but somewhere between March 25th and May 27th has been hinted at. More details will be hinted at today during the “Ready Up” stream.

Can’t say too much about this, sorry ;( but remember this patch is just rewards phase 2 and the final phase is just around the corner! (It’s not too long after this patch) Disregard any rumors about the feature build being months away. We’ve worked so kitten this build, we are here struggling to be patient just as you all are :/

The build is not in June. Just wanted to squash that before it became a thing! :P

Watch RU tomorrow. We’ll hint at some things…

In my opinion, an expansion must hit in 2014.

March 18 – Epilogue, Story patch
March 25 – Sub patch, WvW focused
April 1 – SAB
April 14 – ?
April 28 – ?

My speculation.

Expect to wait until at least April 14.

In my opinion, an expansion must hit in 2014.

I am aware of that. Just wondered if the OP had something more specific.

Well, we aren’t sure about SAB on April Fool’s Day, though it is a good bet.

It would be nice if we knew how long the ‘break’ will be.

In my opinion, an expansion must hit in 2014.

If SAB 3 is even harder than world 2, just for a different colored SAB skin and a doctors in applied jumping title, I wouldn’t hold my breath for that.

Jade Quarry
Eternity, The Juggernaut, Kudzu…

Anet needs to do something cooler for April 1st. Like, the Disruption of the Magical Leylines that Scarlet started causes a distrubance in the Eternal Alchemy, which accidentally sent Commandos into the past.

When the event ends and the Commandos leave, and their weapons are left behind, and we get some awesome Weapon and Armor skins that have that modern look, but the Guild Wars 2 style applied to them.

In my opinion, an expansion must hit in 2014.

Theoretically that is true. However that is exactly what Anet said they would do. Now we are at the point where we would have gotten an expansion if that was they way they would have gone for and we are at the end of the first LS and we did not get any of that.

Besides that, the focus on the cash-shop that we have now also means other changes in the game. A lot of grind and world-drops and cash-shop item. All to try and improve gem-sales.
The game could be so much better of those things where in the game with fun mechanics. That would then also be end-game that is now missing so much.

In my opinion, an expansion must hit in 2014.

No thanks.
Why would I want to purposely drop money on an expansion when we’re getting content for free under the current setup?
I’m not totally satisfied with the content we’re getting, but an expansion isn’t magically capable of giving us inherently different content. Anything it could deliver can be delivered through the usual content patches.

In my opinion, an expansion must hit in 2014.

Now I have stated before in old threads that I believe Anet is working on an expansion, however, the possibilty of it coming in 2014 is low.

As Anet is basically trying new updates models with feature ones, a new LS and possibly other methods, the expansion will be slower to complete and I would await no sooner date than very late 2014 or jan-apri 2015.

In my opinion, an expansion must hit in 2014.

I certainly want an expansion, a proper big, juicy expansion elaborating and extending the personal story. (To me Personal Story and Living Story is far far far far from the same, and does completely different things).

I don’t mind the LS, I even liked most parts of it. But it cannot replace what an expansion would do imo. Not ever.

For a thread titled like this, I expected to see theories and rumors to back up this claim why an expansion “must” hit in 2014.

I agree with you. This game needs new and interesting content in expansion pack format and it needs it sooner rather than later. More over, the basic game play itself might need some new elements or perhaps an overhaul to make it more in-depth. There is a strong possibility that this year’s new MMO releases will bite into GW2’s sales.

In my opinion, an expansion must hit in 2014.

Not to go off topic and get into other games, but what new stuff does any new game releasing this year actually bring to the table? Other games are advertising dynamic scaling events, but Guild Wars 2 does that already. Other Games are advertising Dungeons, but Guild Wars 2 does that already. Other games are advertising this and that, and trying everything possible to justify a subscription fee, but Guild Wars 2 does the exact opposite.

I see GW2 sales dropping a little bit, but, after everyone realizes that these ‘new’ games aren’t actually that new at all, GW2 will end up on top again (except for the game on top of the top). Regardless of expansion.

In my opinion, an expansion must hit in 2014.
