Leveling in GW2 isnt fun.

It was a downer before. but now there is little reward for leveling.

Nothing improved for the lower levels, yet you say you dont want people rushing to level.

Why should I take my time leveling in your detailed world if its painful to level?

yup.. new trait system makes it less fun to level up.
Mega servers make it harder to finish hearts or find events that are not hunted down by others.

I’ve gotta say… GW2 has the most casual (and FAST) leveling of any MMO I’ve played in the last decade. If you find this “painful” you may want to find another genre entirely.

I am currently leveling 2 alts via WvW/crafting. Leveling has always been boring to me, because what I want to do is level 80 content. The upscaling is even more useless now than before.

Idk why anyone outside of rp’ers would take their time to level, :/

You do remember gw2 was advertised as “if you’ve never played an mmo this is the one for you.”

Many people here dislike other mmo’s for that exact reason. Things take too long to get to what people actually want to play.

If you don’t enjoy PvE leveling then just join the Karma train in EotM. It’s the most efficient and rewarding way to level nowadays.

You also get plenty of tomes nowadays which further speed-up the leveling process. My Engineer is currently level 60 with 30 minutes of play-time, simply because of Tomes, Boosts etc.

Certain Hearts are harder to complete, while others are easier now, because of related events starting more frequently. Although Anet stated that they nerfed the 1-79 Mobs because of the new trait system, for some professions until they reach lvl 36 or beyond, certain encounters/skill point challenges indeed are a pain and help is needed to survive/achieve them. Thanks to Megaserver help is not far away in most situations.

Eg. even if I equip the best items, eat food to buff toughness or vitality or power, my lvl 19 Elementalist faces death more often than before the patch. Especially archers do incredible high and fast damage to him. A mixed group of melees and archers is extremely dangerous now. Dodging 2 times and then it’s over in seconds. I don’t know if it’s my playstyle to blame or the patch – I tend to blame the patch^^
I also level a Guardian, Engineer and Mesmer. The Engineer has the most easy life because of his turrets, although they get destroyed pretty fast once they get the aggro. The Guardian feels pretty durable – as long as he attacks the mobs (it happens from time to time that he doesn’t do anything after a double click on a mob, not attacking, not turning around or attacking only one time and then stop – when this happens, then former easy fights become a real challenge).
The Mesmer seems to suffer the least from the changes of the patch. At least I did not notice a significant increase of difficulty playing him.

- says you, and rewards are like… well, levels

Nothing improved for the lower levels, yet you say you dont want people rushing to level.
- nothing much changed either, traits barely mattered before you started to patch together your final build near max

Why should I take my time leveling in your detailed world if its painful to level?
- a question only you can answer for yourself, and the feeling is yours, not necessarily true for other people

Many people here dislike other mmo’s for that exact reason. Things take too long to get to what people actually want to play.

This illusion is very persistent, that it’s ok to do unfun repetitive chores for the promise of something fun later which then turns out to not be anymore fun either. It’s baffling how many players are dismissing like 90% of an MMOs content for some perceived reward that doesn’t exist in the first place.

I don’t see how anyone could argue the new system is more fun or rewarding. You used to get something every level up, a reason to keep going. Now levels might as well not even be there until 30, and then only sporadically after that. I thought it was fun and had a nice balance before, the way it is now just seems like a huge step backwards and makes no sense.

Imagine if leveling wasn’t a thing at all (Perhaps a 5 hour tutorial though).
Then, all of the countless hours spent on content created for leveling, could instead be spent on a lot more Dungeons, different structured PvE challenges, more sPvP game modes, more items, etc.

I wonder if there’s leveling in EQN…
(edit: apparently there are none in that game.)

I’m leveling a ranger these days, and I have to say I have a mixed feeling about it.

I liked it better when every level got a trait point to apply to my build, even if realistically they didn’t do anything big until a major or minor trait was unlocked every 5 levels (until then it was just a minor unnoticeable change in a stat), at least it gave the illusion of something progressing every level.

That said, though, I absolutely love the megaserver system so far. At least in my experience, events are popping up much more frequently, and I’m yet to see one that stays for too long without people doing them (well, the exception was one of the “get X drops and hand over to NPC” where the NPC bugged out and remained in its original location and didn’t have the gather icon on top of him, but as soon as someone pointed on map chat where he was it progressed quickly), and at least comparing to when I leveled up my necromancer a couple months ago, hearts seem to fill a LOT faster and easier since most events I’ve seen that happen near a heart count for its completion.

Then again, I’ve always liked to explore the world and see the story behind it… this ranger is the 6th character I’m taking to level 80 and still finding new things and events I hadn’t seen before.

It’s a pile of Elonian protection magic, mixed with a little monk training,
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.

I may not be understanding you correctly.

Content created at level 80 does not seem likely to take less dev time than content created at level 40. Levels are essentially just behind the scenes numbers designed to create a perception of progression. 40 or 80 you are activating skills on your skill bar in order to defeat mob 124356, right ?

I’m talking mostly about Hearts, most DEs and probably a huge chunk of the zones. Pretty much that I guess. It would be sad to see the latter go away, but I can’t really imagine that it would be much of a problem to have a lot less of the world to explore;
I don’t care about that once I’m at level 80 (which practically everyone is without levels).

lord, no! what about starting with combining your traits to a build you think will do well and get a full exotic and/or ascended set first? Personally, I will not care about some aesthetics only item (legendary pretty much is that, the change stats on the fly -thing really isn´t that useful in GW2 PvE theorycrafting) until some precursor I like will drop (guess that will be never).

Well tbf, what I enjoy most is lv 80 content. WvW, Dungeons and fractals.
I really can’t do these effectively without being level 80. So yeah leveling an alt sucks. It’s slow, and it’s boring because it’s not the content I want to do.

No, more like attempting dungeons in solo or duo. Reaching level 50 frac, getting my craft to ascended, being able to play WvW without being so badly upscaled.
(I will not be going for a ledg. but I would like to kit out my alts in favourite style, which I wont bother with til they’re lv80).

I’m sorry people like to kick me if I’m wearing rabid gear because I’m slwoing them down or I’m a bad player. Maybe I dont’ like them slowing me down by 10 second to 15 minutes.

People keep switching and I’m a bad player and can’t carry them, and some of the wipe could be prevented if people dont’ switch.

I don’t mind if people switch after the boss die(like you can do in ac path 3). I just hate people switch during boss fight. And sometimes the whole group wipe which could be prevented if “that” person didn’t switch.

While leveling, here’s what to do.

Complete whole maps (while doing events you encounter)
Do your personal story
Craft your gear
When dungeons become available, try to do them.

This will obviously increase your leveling time and diversify your experience. All of these are easy to do and completes each other.

Now on the Trait subject, yes some of them are very hard (see impossible) to get at lower level. But you can deal with the ones you unlock pretty easily and if you need a specific one, you can still unlock it at trainer.

All things considered, I’m leveling a new character with new patch and I find it frustrating by times to have traits I want on a very high level required objective.

I started a new character upon a return to see the new Features. At first I didn’t mind it much as the mobs had been toned down considerably. However, now well into the 60s I’m finding it drab to keep going.
Where the levels had come quickly early on, now they ping in slowly making those gaps for traits too slow.

Further, it seems to me (just an opinion) that the planning on where to get some of those Traits wasn’t thought out very well – adding in, the “gentle push” to get me into WvW (which I will not do as I do not enjoy it at all) is annoying. I already have enough issues getting money to buy my armor I want, and now I have to buy those traits as well. – In other words, what could have been a plus (unlockable traits in PvE, level tuned towards the proper tiers) turned into yet another “sigh” issue where I am finding myself rolling my eyes wondering wth.

Am I finding it harder? No.
Am I finding it annoying? A little bit.
Am I enjoying it as much as I had in the past? No.

Perhaps re-tooling the traits to areas where the tiers are level appropriate will help in making it more enjoyable again..? (For me anyway)

In my opinion, leveling is actually fun.

Well, for me, anyway. I like completing maps, getting the reward, and advancing my character.

I currently have 1 level 80 and am leveling 6 other characters.

This was why I always wanted to make it a lvl 20 cap. Too late now since the whole game revolves around lvl 80… The thing is, getting to level 80 the first couple time is a blast! Heart quests, missions, find POI, vistas, and waypoints. But after doing it twice, it isn’t as interesting. All the fun and end-games stuff are at level 80. Not to mention, the new update on the Traits has a positive and negative impact. It is nice to be more organized… but the downfall is that we don’t look forward to every level up any longer like we used to.

GW1, your max level is 20…. and boss’s max level = 30+ =) that was sweet…

I have to say i wasn’t a fan of the levelling process pre-patch and even less so now. you start off completely generic and need to run around wacking things to unlock even your basic weapon attacks…. then you need to unlock utility slots… the base mechanics of your class…. then progress through single and double stat gear (which shouldn’t even exist. just make level 1 tri stat gear available to begin with.) Not to mention with some classes traits refine your playstyle, while for others the traits define them (mesmer, I’m looking at you)

For the record I find saying the levelling up process is faster/easier than another MMO is kinda flawed logic. The absence of a negative is not a positive. That’s like saying it’s OK for someone to hit you in the face because they could’ve hit you in the privates.

It takes ~20 hours to fully level a toon in DCUO. It’s still an arduous task.

The simple fact is you aren’t just less powerful. You don’t just have less tools to work with. You are less powerful and lack tools. The biggest challenge for me at early levels is trying to enjoy myself with a kitten character who poorly represents his chosen class.

For the record I levelled 6 toons fully under old system. I finished 1 and will finish rest with pvp tomes. At least that’s fun and doesn’t require a gear purchase to see what my toon is capable of.

thanks, said it better than I could.

I takes on average (leveling ‘normally’) 40-80 hours, which is quite long. and I don’t think it’s necessary at all to make the game “last longer” as some say.

They’re are many people like me who just dont bother to have/use alts because it just takes too long to get to what they want. So what are these people doing in game if leveling is so important to the life of an mmo?(rhetorical question)

Levelling is such a core concept. Not saying every MMO Includes it, but trust me, if EQ next were going to dispence with levelling, you would KNOW. If you have to wonder…. Levleling is part of the experience.

Well tbf, what I enjoy most is lv 80 content. WvW, Dungeons and fractals.
I really can’t do these effectively without being level 80. So yeah leveling an alt sucks. It’s slow, and it’s boring because it’s not the content I want to do.

I Like crossing the finish line at the end of a marathon. I hate the 26 mile run part. it’s Boring and tedious. How about if instead of running the 26 miles… I take the subway. That way i can do away with the Boring, tedious part of the marathon, and Just do the part I enjoy… crossing the finish line.

I’ve gotta say… GW2 has the most casual (and FAST) leveling of any MMO I’ve played in the last decade. If you find this “painful” you may want to find another genre entirely.

You do remember gw2 was advertised as “if you’ve never played an mmo this is the one for you.”

Many people here dislike other mmo’s for that exact reason. Things take too long to get to what people actually want to play.

That is an interesting question and distinction.

Is the original post about the process of leveling itself? Examples of better rewards for leveling? Speed (compared to)? Other?

Or…is this about leveling as a concept? Meaning, you want to come in Call of Duty on day one, gear up, and play ‘the end game’?

I’d like to skip leveling altogether. Chase gears/chase traits but forget the leveling.
Or make it shorter. This is my first mmo, and I find leveling to be quite dull, it’s just not what I’m after in this game.

Welcome to the world of MMO’s. Levelling is part of the game, if you really cannot stand Levelling up. It seems you are more a Call of Duty type of player. It’s Possible you bought the wrong game.

Respectfully disagree.

Leveling in Guild Wars 2 is extremely dull; once you’ve gotten your weapon skills and all of the utilities that you want, there’s not much to look forward to. I guess the trait changes were aimed to help alleviate the level 30-80 burnout feeling, but in my opinion, it’s just not enough.

Leveling your first character was a new and interesting experience. Leveling the second was manageable because you simply went where you hadn’t gone before. Leveling the third? Fourth? Fifth? It’s just a chore at this point.

We need some added depth and variety to keep things interesting. New weapon combinations, utilities, and elites for each profession would go a long way.

But Guild Wars 2 is all about Exploration. And Exploration levels your character. I don’t know what you are after, but the zones of GW2 are beautiful, and exploring them is fun.

here’s the thing: I’ve already explored all of the zones, and some of them more than once across many alts. i have no reason to explor as much anymore. Now i just want to “play the way i want”, but I don’t really have that option anymore either.
