I may have missed a previous mention of this, but I think the word a lot of people in this thread are looking for is: silhouette.

Personal tastes aside, there is very little variation in silhouette, which is just a fact. It’s particularly pronounced in medium armor (all the long coats). There are a few exceptions, but if someone doesn’t like those exceptions, then they’re out of luck.

I do expect the variety to expand. When new armors are introduced, I very much hope that ANet steps away from these signature shapings and gives us more diversity there. I’d like to see sleeker silhouette options for both men and women, a move away from bulky, “puffed” lines, and some simpler, cleaner designs. My personal issue with armor aesthetics in this game is that most everything is way too busy. Especially the high-end stuff.

This. So much of this.
I actually like the trenchcoat-look of most of the medium armors, but when you have little else to choose from over most of the game, it becomes somewhat tedious.
As for light armor, I loathe that as a female, you are pretty much stuck in either looking mostly naked (and flashing all of your assets all the time is just not…*sigh*. I wouldn’t want to choose that for my avatar) or blandly (! I don’t really mind being covered up, but could you make it a little more pretty? Maybe some more pants?) covered from head to toe. I like some of the sleek looks male scholars get – why did they have to remove ~90% of the fabric for the female version? Agh.
More diversity within the armor classes, please!

I agree with this. I do not think the armor in this game is generally “ugly”. Some pieces I don’t like, but that’s something different. In general I love the different textures, patterns etc, but I have to say that I would really appreciate to get more different styles.

Most of the light armors are uninteresting to me. My favorite is the HoM Heritage skins for light armor. They look excellent on a male human mesmer.

However the other light armors are unappealing to me (granted this is purely opinion, beauty in the eye of the beholder after all).

My biggest disappointment would be the crafted light armors. All but one are just fugly. The “I dream of jeannie” set (level 10-20 crafted). Just horrible with the pointed shoes and baggie pants.

Heavy armors are a bit better but none have been 100% appealing to me on my guardian. Currently I’m wearing AC set except for Legs and Shoulders which are Archon. This is a good look as the legs/shoulders have spikes (not too horribly big) but the other pieces look more functional and gothic.

Part of me thinks that someone in ANet was thinking “hey, wanna see something funny? Watch this…”

I think, what it really missing in Gw2, is a better PHYSIC in armours, especially light and medium.

In the design/drawing of the sets, you can cleary see that there are some divisions and etc, but they move like a whole glued thing, which makes them not THAT awesome.

I’d say put more color variation (more than 3 or 4), but i’m sure it would make some performance impact on the server side, so better just physics which is on client side. Thats what I think.

I do not know who designs the armor but why no cool swashbuckler style armor for light armor.. why is it all so ugly.

What? The problem here is that you want a style that is unbefitting your class. You want LIGHT swashbuckling armor, let’s look at the light armor classes.

Elemental Mystic- not a swashbuckler
Illusion Mystic- not a swashbuckler
Death Mystic- not a swashbuckler

If you were on any of the medium classes, you would be able to get this aesthetic without a problem, because it actually fits those classes. You might as well ask for ‘light armor’ that looks like full plate mail.

The human cultural tier 2 has a pretty good Swashbuckler look to it, but is utterly ruined by the pointless addition of useless, seemingly tacked-on at the last minute spikes on the right arm. Seriously, what IS it with ArenaNet and spikes?!

I liked the Masterwork heavy armor I was buying from the trading post while leveling, particularly after level 60. There’s also armor skins. You want glowy stuff like WoW?

There already is glowy stuff with big shoulders like you’d find in WoW (which also has armor sets that aren’t glowy with big shoulders).

This isn’t 2005 where all the mages were complaining about wearing purple and blue dresses with water coolers coming out of their shoulders.

I have to say that overall I am fairly disappointed with the Armor styles. The dungeon sets are just horrible in my opinion (this is simply my opinion). On those I am going to mix and match them the best I can to make a “decent” overall look. Even most of the cultural armors are filled with “meh” looks. For instance the NPC armor sets of the Norn far far far outweigh in looks compared to their cultural armor. Likewise for the humans. The human t3 heavy armor just makes you look like you are a fat chubby warrior.

The armor designs seemed to be addicted to trench coats for medium and for heavy they are addicted to skirts and butt capes. The simple chainmail sets look great and realistic but the helms are horrible. The move to plate went straight from the realistic chainmail to over the top spikes and rediculousness. There are ways to make plate look ornate and awesome without going over the top WoW shoulders and such.

I know this is harsh commentary on them but it’s my opinion. I love the game but I was honestly shocked that they saved the good armor for the npcs and gave us this very meh armor.

You are forgetting the scalemail in between chain and heavy that mostly looks very nice.

But yeah I hate the spikey shoulders to

Well, this is an opinion thread. Personally, I have been spending a ton of time on my armors making them look “just right” If I wasn’t so lazy, I’d figgure out how to post a screenshot of my Sylvan ele’s costume. Playing around with dyes can make a huge difference. I love the armor here, especially the cultural. Ugly? Not by a long shot, to me. I actually have come to think it’s the most awesome looking armor online Everyone has different tastes. Now the weapons on the otherhand I think border on silly looking, especially those gargantuan greatswords others think look cool. I’d like to see more attention paid to fine detailing rather than size, but whatever. Some look nice.

But isn’t the Sylvari cultural armor some of the best looking in the game?

The problem is that only Sylvari have access to Sylvari cultural armor, the rest have the standard looking armor and cultural armor that looks like standard armor.

I’ve been able to find looks for all my level 80 characters I’m happy with.

However, I would agree that a very large percentage of armors in the game are ugly/redundant. Most depressing for me is that I might be able to mix and match one set of dungeon armor for each armor class I’d be happy with, but 90% of the dungeon armor, IMO, is ugly.

I know that MMOs typically have to limit the variety of armors to some finite number, due to rendering performance issues. I absolutely hate that such a large percentage of that quota is filled with such ugly armor. Even if they hired some incredible armor artists/modelers, there may be limits on how many new sets they can add to the game, which is sad.

I’d love to see the worst half of all armors scrapped and replaced and if it where up to me, I’d send almost every dungeon armor set back to the drawing board.

I love the game, but when you want aesthetics to be an alternative for stat inflation, you need much, much better aesthetics. There probably would have been no need for Ascended gear if Arenanet could have delivered on desirable end game gear skins.

Honestly, I don’t understand how they can create such a beautiful game, filled with exceptional environmental, character and mob models; but deliver so poorly on armor/weapon design.

I really, really hope they have new talent working on armor design for the first expansion!

(Seriously, I love almost everything else about the game, but armor looks are a huge disappointment in context with the rest of the game. Most of the game’s armors might be acceptable in an average MMO, but they do not befit this awesome game).

I’ve been able to mix and match looks I’m happy with, but to my eye, a huge percentage of armor skins in the game, even the skins you really have to work for or pay big money for, are just plain bad.

I completely agree. I’d be fine with the addition of the new styles if they had also had more armors based on the GW1 styles. If trench coats weren’t so dominant, they would probably have been a welcome addition. Instead, we have overkill on one theme and lack variety.

At least they did a good job this the Gem Store medium armor. It’s true to the original and came out well in conversion. The Gem Store light armor on females is probably the ugliest armor in any MMO I’ve ever played and botches the conversion from the original to a degree I would never have imagined possible.

Heh, armors in this game are mostly ok looking, but Medium needs way more sets of slimmer and more revealing stuff to balance the trench coat mafia look going on, and all that needs to be outside of the realms of 20-30g per-piece of cultural armors… but some armor names or general discriptions for medium wearers:
—-It should be noted this is all for human, norn, and sylvari female character models… i personally get bored staring at a guy’s butt all day, and have never really considered playing charr or asura… they don’t suit me—
Duelist set, the chest specifically (same skin as the armors named for GW1 characters)
Norn T1 and T2 cultural legs
Human T3 Cultural Chest/legs (nice full suit, except wtf is with the sandals? and 30g and 25g for those chest and legs respectively btw)
Sylvari T1 chest, but the plant stuff is hard to mix with other sets…
Vigil Medium Legs (but the bikini bottom thing is thick enough to pass as a diaper)

Medium is the worst by far if you are looking for wide variation, and you will be stuck mixing armor sets if you want any kind of revealing look… I’ve had no such issue finding heavy and light mixes when going for that kind of look.

But I also want to point out: It seems all the armor models have been designed to work off a single skin that gets wrapped around all the various meshes out there. (pretty sure I’ve seen a dev make a written reference to this too somewhere) While this is probably for performance, it effects other stuff in really strange ways.
Prime examples can be seen on human vs norn shoulder and skirt-type items, where the garments generally hang properly on the humans, but for some reason they flare out in really awkward ways around the norns, or in the shoulders case, float way off the character’s actual shoulder in a way that even the full and proper set frequently doesn’t lend any sense to… the shoulders for sure is because female norn shoulders are generally much more flat horizontally than human shoulders that hang seemingly more naturally, and the skirts and coat tails, probably for similar reasons. And don’t get me started on the bone-headed choices for asymmetric shoulders (I should find these people and make their heads asymmetric for all those murdered potential looks)

Pointing all that out because more than just the armor itself can make it look really nice, or really stupid.. here’s to hoping for more variety and better fitting clothes in the future though!

Everyone knows that most of the GW2 armor is ugly, those that defend it are just blantly delusional and try to justify by saying it’s just personal preferences.

The real issue though is that GW2 does not have enough armor skins, they keep recycling most of the armor, even later in the game.

Compared to other MMO’s, GW2 lacks so much variety in terms of different Armor quantities.

There has been NUMEROUS, ABUNDANT complaints about the lack of armor in GW2. These complaints just don’t come up for no reason, sure many of the whiners complain because they haven’t reached ‘max’ level to see all the armors yet. But many of us who have done everything in the game already will also know that GW2 lacks armor skins.

http://dulfy.net/2012/08/09/gw2-pvp-armor-collection/

There’s something like 30-35 armor sets available to each character. You can mix and match to taste. There’s hundreds of different shades of dye and each piece of armor takes 1-3 different dyes, usually 2 or 3.

Maybe I just have lower standards, but when it came to deciding on my end-game look I felt like I had plenty of choice, considering this is such a young MMO. My main (male sylvari ranger) has the vigil medium set with duelist pauldrons and Ebon Vanguard weapons, and (I think) with the right dyes he looks badkitten.

But yes, they did overdo it with trench coats and face masks for medium. And for light it’s not skimpy armor that is tasteless, it’s the fact the female is skimpy while the male gets voluminous robes for the same set as it appears blatantly sexist and removes the style choice from the player.

On average, the armors in the game are pretty ugly. I’ve mixed and matched to get looks I’m happy with, but it’s sad how few attractive combinations there are. On top of generally poor design, there is a huge amount of repetitiveness. Heavy and Medium armor in particular gives you only the slightest variation on a theme and if you don’t like that theme, you are left with little acceptable choice.

I honestly don’t get it. Some where there was a serious failure of imagination/talent. I hope this will be addressed with future additions to the game and I pray that the armor in the first full expansion makes huge leaps forward in quality and variety.

Acquisition of cool looking armor/weapon skins as a progression incentive really could have worked if the skins in the game had actually been desirable.

The game is incredible, but calling out areas that do need serious improvement can only make the game better. Armor skins are probably the biggest failure and to a degree that is in-congruent with the quality of the rest of the game.

I don’t like most of the armor in the game.

I would prefer that we choose the selection of the armor. This way even though a thousand people are wearing the same armor…depending on their choices each can have a totally different look. example:
When you go to the vendor to purchase an armor you can select:

Head piece: choose from the following: hood or Mask
Shoulder: choose from the following: plain or decorated (example spikes) left side or decorated right side
Chest: choose from the following: Vest or short sleeve or long sleeve or coat
Legs: Choose from the following lengths: short, knee length or ankle length (this goes for pants or skirts)
boots: Choose from the following: ankle high, knee high, thigh high.

Anet could limit these selections to armor that is obtained from a Vendor. Armor that is obtained via loot drops do not get a selection..you get what is dropped

the shoulder thing is a very, very bad pet peeve to me… ive posted many times, but i think the graphic artists and designers for most games are missing 4 inches in one of their legs and dont see the horrid imbalance in 1 stupid big shoulder piece and a flap, maybe if anything on the other… doesnt all have to be symmetric, the named heavy armor exotic shoulders (pit fighter set @ less than 80) are perfectly fine actually.. but i digress

as to the head piece for medium, there are 2 other things available, though 1 is kinda cloak and dagger and the other looks like something from an 80’s si-fi movie… the head piece form the guild armor set (there is another version that can be gotten at karma vendors iirc who’s name i can’t conjure or find atm) has the kinda strange motif of covering all of the sides of the face, and up under the chin, but leaving the face and hair uncovered… and then there is that thief starter headband, you can put that on rangers and engi’s legally afaik by taking that piece, transmuting it to a plain white item (vendor bought, can’t be anything that soulbinds on use)… this will make it account bound, then you can put it on whoever or transmute it to whatever… i’ve done this a few times for shoulders and hats on medium and heavy armor characters since the normal stones are a dime a dozen (if your gear is 80 you are borked into doing it with a fine stone for each shift involving a level 80 piece) and you can do this with weapons and armors from the orders too if you are so bent btw.

a lot of the looks and feel were lost when GW1 armors didnt make it into gw2 in any big ways… most of the ones that i really do feel conform to look and feel are either late game, or stuck in the realms of clique groups who run dungeons over and over together (at about 1g per run or better in most all explorable modes, 30g for a t3 culture chest really isnt bad… but good luck making that cycle rewarding, let alone fun while dealing with the baggage pugs bring along far too often)

Of all the MMO games I have played GW armor is ugly. No cool looking armor just to be cool looking. I do not know who designs the armor but why no cool swashbuckler style armor for light armor.. why is it all so ugly. I play a Female Ranger and armor is ugly no female style at all in the armor.. same with the male armor. I ultimately hate the looks of almost all the armor in GW.

Sorry, but I don’t agree with you. I have seen ugly armor a lot in wow. Armor in this game is a lot better.

The armor and weapons in GW2 are god-awful, sinfully ugly. There’s really no excuse, given the outstanding, epically beautiful job they did back on GW1 armor and weapon skins. I took a long break from playing GW2 and having returned, the lack of cool looking armor to aim for has completely robbed me of enthusiasm for any kind of grind.

If you want proof, just look in the gem store, the Primeval armor looks a billion times better than anything now and it was a skin taken and updated from GW1.

Btw the Runic Blade in GW1 was my favorite looking sword, based on the LOTR sword ‘anduril’. I just saw the latest GW2 version. They covered it in cheap-looking glitter and tacked on the lamest particle emitter to vomit sprinkled glitter all over the place. They used to be so good at making cool, attractive skins, what happened? They took the classic GW1 fiery dragon sword, which in GW2 (HoM unlock) still looks better than almost anything else, painted it a flat light blue removed the particle effect, it looks like plain garbage and they act like it’s epic gear? They also took the awesome Zodiac sword that used to be black and white/gold in GW1, screwed up the colors and again they act like it’s desirable when they just made it worse! I’d like to know who’s responsible for these inexplicable aesthetic decisions? They have the rights to all the great GW1 stuff and just squandered it all!

What WOULD be a cool (and probably easy to implement) way to solve much of that issue is that the use of those transmutation gems ignores the armor rating fully…man just think about the mixes you could make alone through that and i FINALLY could get something else but a darn trench coat, boring pants, pirate hats and puny excuses for shoulders. There are skins in game that fully ignore whatever armor rating your piece got…like the new facepaint mask they added recently. Want a heavy rating? Sure go on mate. Medium? Np right at you. Light? Of course bro. So yea.. do that to ALL armor pieces and it would make a LOT of people happy. And dont give me that “heavy should look like heavy and light like light” stuff. If facepaint can be heavy and medium a pirate hat can be light and heavy. Im sure some heavy and light guys and girls would love to get their hands on some leather pants or a leather mask.. or just a good old trenchcoat for a change while some medium guy\girl would drop a tear to finally get a chainmail chestpiece and a cloth skirting or armored bottoms. Specially in gw2 where you get a lot of awesome pieces to work with its always a mood killer to look at the merchants and go like “oh wow those shoulders would fit perfectly on my avatar, and deam look at this helmet” and then you see the armor rating and yea… too good to be true. Imagine alone the amount of transmutation crystals that would get sold Anet.

lol, you should never play Neverwinter. The graphics are great, gameplay is great but the armor…….is almost nonexistent. From level 1 to the level right before max level every, and I mean every, single piece of armor you receive looks the exact same with maybe a tiny single tweak every 10 levels or so. And when you reach max level? Ya, the armor gets a lot cooler and better but the amount of armor sets I could count on one hand I feel like. There are 2 PvP armor sets, one regular PvP and one gauntlygrym PvP set. PvE sets I’m sure there are more but suuuuuuuuuch a small amount. You have to be extremely satisfied with the game play in order to play this game.

I like most of the armor in GW2 and I am very critical of this game.
The texture quality is quite good and I think that there is pretty much something for everyone.
The only gripe I have with GW2 armor is the massive amount of clipping.

I think there are enough good armorskins out there. However I have to say that the low level armor all look kinda meh. You use them until you’re lvl80 and never use the again.

There’s plenty of fancy looking armors in the game.

Every single piece of male medium armor is pitifully ugly. None of it (unless you really like long coats or dresses) is appealing to my eyes. None. Zero. 0. Female medium armor is almost as bad but there are a few pieces I like.

RNG is a bell curve. Better hope you’re on the right side.

I still use some low level armors transmute with level 80 armors. Is unique when u can comebine low level with high level armors.

Alright, I will have to agree a little bit on the medium armor. There are a couple that look good on the male side for my thief but most I’m not too fond of. I do wish there were some better medium male looking armors for my thief (not too sure about female). But I will say that compared to games like never winter, this game has a godly amount of armor.

I do like the HotW medium armor set. Otherwise the preponderance of trench coats is disappointing.
