Inactive XP-Bar
Pre mastery system, levelling awarded spirit shards… i don’t see why they removed that… i hate seeing exp flashing up on screen and going to waste.

You may be mistaken, as Spirit Shards were never awarded for filling the XP bar.
I like the idea of receiving the current Map Bonus reward, though I’m not sure what one would receive if one happened to level up in a Starter Zone or City.

You got Skill Points for leveling after 80, those were converted to spirit shards during a certain patch. Spirit Shards themselves were never given for leveling.

They could make it so once you have achieved all the xp needed for your masteries in tyria/HoT (or when you hit level 80 for non-HoT players) your xp bar is replaced by a zone reward progress bar, which is increased slowly with xp gain (in addition to the large amounts of progress from completing events).
They could even add an interface when clicking on the bar that would show all the rewards and your progress. It’d be much better than the frequently broken reward preview on the world map.

So, the XP bar would change with each zone? And show 0 in Starter Zones and Cities?

I think this is a great idea.
Being able to see what your progress is and how far you are to your next reward would be an incentive to do more in a map, especially for people who are just passing through while farming.
Not sure what it should be replaced with, but I find that, for myself, I am less inclined to play in central Tyria because my XP has no value anymore. Combined with the way the meta works in the new zones, I find myself playing GW2 less and less.
Yes, I’ve brought this up on a few other threads. Drives me nuts to see all that experience flashing, but it not doing anything for me at all. A small reward is all I’d want. A random loot bag, the current map reward (like that idea), spirit shard (even though I have tons), 1 gold (heck even 30 silver), etc..
I just get annoyed emmensly by seeing the experience flash and not get any progress feeling.
I agree, seeing the XP go to waste bothers me. Plus, it changes in-game decisions. Why bother to stop and rez a downed NPC, since the XP is no incentive?
Some sort of fill-the-bar reward would be excellent. Make it random with some carrot out there, like a mini or whatnot.
The fact that so many of these topics have popped up since HoT launched baffles me to no end. Experience has been “wasted” at level 80 long before HoT launched, ever since the major patch that split Skill Points into Spirit Shards / Hero Points. And yet I don’t remember nearly as many complaints about “wasting” experience then as there are now.
Did people just not realize it was getting wasted? I guess that’s certainly possible since every time one of these topics comes up there are a handful of people complaining about the fact that overlevelling used to give spirit shards, which it never did. Or is there some kind of psychological effect where people just overlooked it before, but because masteries have suddenly drawn attention to leveling after 80 everyone just now realizes it doesn’t do anything once you max?
Personally, I really don’t see a problem with it doing nothing once you max masteries. Maybe its just because I play a lot of other games outside of GW2, but I certainly don’t ever expect to get free stuff after I “max out”. And if you’re really playing the game just for experience points and not the actual gameplay and thus not getting anything for your extra points ruins it for you, then… I dunno. That’s kind of odd to me.
I wouldn’t be OPPOSED to some sort of reward for extra experience, but it just doesn’t seem like a major issue to me, and it probably affects a rather tiny portion of the population as I imagine most players probably aren’t anywhere near maxing their masteries anyway.

I think the reason was that prior to that big patch you got Hero Points, which was decent (though I had litterally hundreds I didn’t use). Then after the patch it was said to be temporary until HoT came with its masteries. Temporary I can deal with. Then after HoT the masteries ended up being much less than expected (meaning I filled all of Old Tyria within days) and now we are left with no gaining of experience and the mocking yellow numbers have finally gotten to many of us.
Frankly, the way they talked about masteries, I expected it would take a very long time before maxing them out, then suppose I hoped there would be some minor reward after finishing them. The no movement XP bar I had hoped was simply a place holder until the larger system was in place.
This has to be one of those things where you have to say….What were they thinking…
If you are gonna gain experience……make it mean something….
It’s like they can’t see the forest for the trees.
I am sorry if this is a litte of topic but…
To me it feels like alot of you players who complains about this have actually been farming exp to level up your masteries as fast as possible and I just can’t see why you now are complaining that you don’t get more stuff for leveling…
It is like get a realy tasty cake and you eat it as fast as possible becouse it has different flavours in each part so you want to taste it all now and when the cake is gone you go and complain to the one who baked you the cake becouse there isn’t anything more for you to eat. So next time, mabe slow down and enjoy yourself instead of stress everything.
This message is meant for those who have “farmed” exp in places like CoF and other stuff with multiple exp boosters.
And on to the Topic:
I think that giving a map reward is nice for a level up as some have posted… Just watch out so it doesn’t become another thing to use to farm something.

Sorry but for me this is untrue. Actually I’m a very slow progresser, do the stuff I want not what “needs to be done”. So though I play a lot I’m at mastery-level 87, so much to do in the HoT-Maps.
But those old tyria masteries… come on! Play a little here and there and after 2 weeks or so they are full (given u have enough mastery-points, which I had). It is not, that I’m craving for content, there is a lot left for me. I just want a little movement down there at the bottom of the screen with a little(!) reward when I decide that today I do not want to be in magus falls but in cursed shore or silver wastes.
And finally, as I already said in the OP, it bothers me that all those xp i get are wasted.

You’re either very new and simply don’t know this or arguing semantics and very wrong. You use to get skill points for filling your xp bar, hero points were split up and renamed to spirit shards and hero points. So yes, you got spirit shards for filling your xp bar.

Old skill points you had accumulated prior to the patch that split Hero Points and Spirit Shards got converted, yes.
However, AFTER the patch you never got anything for filling your experience bar. You never directly got Spirit Shards for overfilling experience, you only got spirit shards from skill points you had BEFORE the patch happened.
So yes, saying you never got spirit shards directly for experience is correct.

Like I said, you’re arguing semantics. Renaming something does not mean it is new. They function exactly like skill points and was renamed from skill points. They are exactly what they appear to be, renamed skill points and thus earned from xp once upon a time.
Have to agree. Odds were good that people would reach this point. I wouldn’t mind seeing something similar to the old system where your XP keeps rolling and when you hit 80 again you are granted 1 spirit shard. That way players still feel like there is progression even if its just chasing a number while new masteries are being added.

What he is saying is after the patch that renamed Skill points to Spirit shards, your xp bar would still fill up and top off just as it had before. But you got nothing for it. This happened every since that change up until the point when the mastery system was released with HoT, at least a month, although not sure of the how long since I can’t recall the exact date that patch dropped.
So yes you are right about the renaming not being important, but his point about wasted XP stands. I think most people didn’t notice it because the bar kept filling, unlike now where it just sets there after you max out everything.
I mentioned this myself the last time some one complained about this.
It was supposed to be temporary, and after HoT you were supposed to get spirit shards when not earning masteries (or just spirit shards, in case of core players that didn’t buy the expansion). It’s just that never actually happened.
In fact, many people still think that it did happen (as Anet was very silent about abandoning this design).
Remember, remember, 15th of November
yeah its also like that in wvw, xp pops up all over the place and theres no reason to care because it doesnt do anything (other than be annoying by not doing anything). i wish anet would repurpose it
It was bad enough when my bar kept filling, emptying and starting again with nothing to show for it. Now, because I can’t unlock any new CTM lines (since I won’t play the necessary content to get the CMPs, and don’t want those lines anyway), my bar is an eternally solid grey, whatever I do in CT.
I imagine that you don’t need to be a trained psychologist to be instantly aware that nothing says, ’You’re done now – find another game to play’, more clearly than a solid grey XP bar that will never display any XP ever again, whatever I do.

Making another “mastery” line, that is infinitely repeatable, automatically resets and gives a spirit shard upon completion, is accessible in both HoT and Tyria and is a base for players that do not have the expansion would likely be the best choice.

A lot of people complained about wasted XP between that patch and HoT. There was like a new post every day complaining about that exact thing.
