Q:
Inspecting players
A:
I’d love an inspect option which pulled up the forum post history and if there was any posts regarding mounts, DPS meters or capes, etc. I could immediately know and not group with that person.

oh poor thing, hope u brought ur flame cape.

Op…what have you done?

op just recommended something that he thought would “improve” the game
So, i think it would be a Great idea for Guild Wars 2 to have a player Inspection option so you can look at your friends/guild/random players, whomevers gear, and maybe a little side note if they have it Transmuted so we could know what they have their item looking like
but mainly id just like to be able to see peoples gear, for the soul purpose that we could know how much better someones gear is so that we might be able to ask them where they got it or how they got it
i believe that if we see someones items it will persuade us into getting better gear
Or, you could just ask them. Like people do with my sword and hammer. And I till them. HoM rewards. You need to go play GW1 to get them. But hay, why ask when we can just silently judge them, and abuse it to kick anyone from a group because they are missing something that you feel they must have.

Seconded. A horrible option that’s been gone over many, many times.
The horse is dead, we can stop beating it now.

because its not about judging, its about improving, if someone is not up to par, you can help them reach it, to me this game is not about being the best its making sure everyone is equally as good, you’re as strong as your weakest link you want to make sure everyone is going to be prepared for what lies ahead
This is just a ruse (cuz all tiers of gear have identical stats for that tier….) to get positive talking on equipment inspection for raids and such…. not gonna happen…. good luck to you, hope you got flame resist on!

My mount doesnt like its cape skin to be inspected, so i told Anet not to implement it.

Let them peer closely at my armor I’ve been wearing for almost 3 years straight with never a dry clean? Noooo. I don’t think so.

so who cares about your mount? i just want to look at players gear so that i know how much i could be improving, or if they have a cool transmute i would like to know what it is, cause you know people lie alot
Oooh, and when you /peep you can also like or dislike their build and equipment; perhaps even post helpful comments to their profile and screen shots of an awesome moment.
this is a game about showing off… 99.99999% of the players will link you thier gear anyways when you ask, justto brag about what they got… unless your in a dungeon/raid/frac. In which case a quick google search will bring up numerous places to look at builds and meta.

My mount cares and Anet seems sympathetic of the notion.

For you maybe. But not everyone is as noble. And sure we can make suggestions as to how they could improve, but ultimately what right do any of us have to tell people what gear they should or should not be using.

there’s no right in someone saying GET THIS GEAR
but if someone appreciates that specific item or wants it solely for the Transmute they could ask where you got that item. and most people shouldnt go around telling others what items to get, people should normally ask you hey man what do i need to do for that item, but how are they suppose to know what item it is if the person is just rude or AFK?
you want to know what item it is, go look, the speech is optional you don’t have to tell someone that their item sucks or is a blessing from the gods. thats all on the player.
and if you know what item it is you could even go online and look where it drops and not even have to talk to the other person
GW2 Efficiency.
Just saying.
We already have it – https://gw2efficiency.com/c/<charactername>
All gear, all traits, all inventory slots to make sure no one is bringing a garbage build or trying to skip the costs of consumables.
I expect most raid leaders to make use of this tool, and boot people who refuse to submit themselves to scrutiny. No one wants to carry dead weight.

but wouldnt you like to know without having to open a browser, just click click, Ohhhh nice gear, kay bye
it would be a lot quicker no looking though things to find that specific item, its right in front of you

Not really. It doesn’t take much effort for someone to ask what the person is wearing or tabbing out to google the basic description or post a screenshot to the forums to ask what it is.
As a side note, I think a lot of us have played long enough that we can tell what a skin is after a quick glance.

Yeah, sometimes it can be frustrating to see a piece of gear that you want on someone who can’t/won’t respond, but it’s hardly the worst thing in the world. If you want it badly enough, the Wardrobe and /wiki can get you the name and how to get it with a few minutes’ effort.
Ultimately the rampant abuse of the system would greatly outweigh the benefits that you’re proposing, especially considering that there’s already a non-invasive workaround. for your non-problem.

I expect that site to go down the first day of raids, and people will be forced to manage without it until they can get it back up.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

And here you are, all three in one post. You must like to solo a lot.

Just no.
Anyone who has played an MMO where this option was available will know just how much discrimination, griefing, and animosity this inevitably creates. Its negative impact on a gaming community far surpasses any associated benefits. And as others have already said, if you want to know what a person has…just ask! Problem solved.
I am 100% behind this idea only if they give me the option to auto block players that inspect me with a msg informing the player who inspects me, “You have been auto-blocked. Have a nice day.”
I have to agree that the abuse of this function would far exceed it’s benefits. when gw2 was close to it’s initial launch this was a question that was asked. anet’s response was simply that they were not putting this function in on purpose. personally I think that it should be considered player harassment. a persons build/gear is their business. ideas like “not being up to expectations” “teaching them” because somehow not being meta means they are ignorant and other such things that players say they would use the function for are opinions nothing more. now I think that there is a middle ground between my opinion of it counting as a ToS social violation and including it for rampant zerker elitists to abuse, could be found. That’s what anet did. they simply left the function out, on purpose. you may now fire up your salt mines.

I played a lot of MMOs and only “discrimination” I saw was against leechers and kittenes who think they can waste everyone’s time by PHIWing in the group content without warning anyone.

Hey, even facebook is getting a dislike button. GW2 forum definitely needs a dislike button.
pretty sure devs don’t want the game to become like WoW where if you’re not in the specific set of gear party owner wants you to be in you get kicked.

Hey .. they brought ANet already so far to implement Raids with the best available
armor only available there .. so why not this as next ?
Or first mounted open world PvP ?
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

No, they have that gw2efficiency now to take the place of inspecting for the hard core raiders.

lucky for me I wear unstatted armor that I can pick any stat of so that it looks blank then, eh?

Idk. The Efficiency will tell them whether or not you have ascended armor and iirc, what your char is wearing, which is what raiders will want to know.

im still fairly new and i think it would benefit the new players is really all im trying to get at, thats a lot for a newbie to do if they dont even know what they are doing. its just a little simple way of viewing items

And if that gets prevalent, that part of the API may be shut off to discourage toxic behavior. Hopefully it doesn’t get abused like that, eh?

As long as it stays with raiders it will probably be considered appropriate since ANet said that ascended was recommended for that content. I’m not sure who else besides high level fractals can enforce a request or be kicked from group, since it requires the person giving a code to access their account information.

That won’t happen.
221 hours over 1,581 days of bank space/hot pve/lion’s arch afk and some wvw.
Interesting thought, the lack of inspect could also be aiding in the toxicity and the need for meta in places like dungeons and fractals. When things are a blank slate people will get tired of failed geared/runed players who slows things down. Since there is little way to check diversity they take a all or nothing approach. Speedrunners could be more open to “non meta builds” so long as they make sense and show to work, however with no way to check this it creates a very reclusive environment.
This also leads to terrible checks such as AP checks, which is a terrible metric on a player’s skill.

A team/party leader can enforce whatever rules they really want for their team though…
If I only wanted ranger bear bows in all ascended in my party for wvw then that’s my right. In turn, someones can refuse to be on my team for whatever reason.

It would be kind of hard to keep people from following you around in open content, but you can always attempt to get the API codes from everyone who wants to join your group in WvW, inspect them and get going in a timely fashion, and also keep anyone else from joining you as you go along, if that’s what you want.
Map chat about such attempt should be pretty entertaining though.
ANet may give it to you.
I don’t know. I would think the Raiders that would be interested in inspections wouldn’t be PuGging, anyway, and wouldn’t really need a gear inspect feature.
But, maybe they will PuG….just seems like opposite ends of the spectrum. /shrug

The only problem is they dont give people time to show that it do work, they kick and try to get what they deem optimal.

Optimal is optimal. It’s an objective value that you can’t treat as fluid.
Everyone knows that most any builds can work. They also know that optimal builds get through content the fastest and others can take much longer depending on who’s using them.

I would expect hard core raid teams to insist on ascended and use some sort of check to make sure people have both ascended and stats wanted. I’ve never raided myself but from reading other forums, they don’t sound like the sort of person to take just anyone into a raid team. You have to prove you’ve got the minimum required gear or they won’t let you join.
ANet may give it to you.
in WoW, ear inspect was cool because the game was designed to be tier based.
However in GW2 all item inspect would do is cause most players to be booted from dungeon groups with the title “P1,2,3 lvl 80 zerker exp players only” or similar titles.
