Huggywuggles.2814

Of course, my main Huggy Wuggles comes directly from my WoW Gnome main character. To me, there is nothing more profoundly fun than playing a diminutive, smartalecy, whirling ball of doom (unless I’m in PvP in which case everyone BUT me specifically is totally OP and needs to be nerfed regardless of class).

But recently, I rolled a Sylvari Ranger and was at an absolute loss as to what to name her. And I thought, and thought and then thought some more, but it seems as if naming new characters feels like too much of a chore.

And as I created and deleted, and struggled for names, I remembered fondly my love of AP High School English class and the best paper I’d ever written.

It was about Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and as I thought back to how I’d struggled with memorizing the prelude in Olde English (and modern English-they really REALLY need to nerf that thing!), I was going over it in my mind.

And what I could remember stuck out to me. Particularly this line.

“Of which vertu engendred is the flour;” which translates to "To generate therein and sire the flower; " and knowing what little I know of Sylvari lore, it hit me like a ton of bricks. And thus, Vertu la Fleur (I know, not exactly Olde English but it seemed right) was born. Of course, that’s the extent of my character’s cleverness as I intend to name each and every one of my pets after salad dressings or salad dressing ingredients…

But aaaaaaaaaaaaaanywho…what are some of your cool, odd character names and where did you get the inspiration for them?

I am a Juicebox Hero. I poke straws in Risen Eyes.

Most of my character names where made up on the spot by looking around my room and seeing what I could come up with.
Rendu…a misspelling of Under(taker) backwards.
Rianoc…..was watching Conair at the time….lol
Nomuertos…a loose translation of undead in Spanish.

And I just reuse them for every game I play.

All of my characters have the name Tyr in them. I got the name from Breath Of Fire 1, it was the main of the end boss at the (which was actually a girl) but years later the changed it to Maria because Tyr was just a bad translation. However ive been using the name for almost 20 years now and almost legally had a name change (yep).

Tyr XIII
Tyr X I I I (tattood on me)
Tyr V I
Tyrannus Krogan (Mass Effect is King)
Tyrzamaeus Krogan
Aelia Valtyrie
Tyrael Stormbringer (my most used name in every mmo, though its usually Tyr Stormbringer)
Tyrael Worldwalker
Czar Tyr Boudabras (Boudabras is Elven for Chaos in the Demon Wars elf language)
Tyr Almighty
Tyr Above All (name ive been using the most recently)

and my one toon with a different name is Crypt The Immortal. The reason I made this is because my in game friend, CP, or Cee Pee, died last April 13th. He mained necromancer and only played sylvari. I took the letters CP and added them to Tyr and came up with Crypt.

I like to try to incorporate the word “Silver” into my character names… just a bad habit, I guess. It doesn’t matter how, it could be in meaning (say, like my ele name Argentra, which contains “Argent” which is silver in many languages) or it can be in pronunciation/sound.

I was struggling to think of a fitting name for my first Sylvari character I made- a male mesmer. I was looking for a short first name and a longer surname. I then had the thought of naming him using species nomenclature (two latin words) and discovered that “Sylvestris” meant “Of/from the forest”. Perfect, that meant that it incorporated that “Silv” sound I was looking for.

So I went on a hunt through my botany books, to try and find a plant that was from the genus “Sylvestris”. There were a few, I seem to remember, but the first one that was befitting of a name was “Malus” and thus “Malus Sylvestris”… The Crab Apple.

I tried the name, unfortunately it was already taken so I creatively misspelled it to reflect “silver” more, and thus Malus Silvestris was born. Many of my other characters use this surname, too.

I’m terrible with creative character naming. I search seventh sanctum and a bunch of other name generator type apps and eventually just settle on obscure music references and mythology.

Made a dreadlocked guard called ‘Jah Fire’ because that class has a focus on burning and fire skills, and that’s a common theme throughout Reggae music and Rastafari.

My Sylvari have Celtic names because it just seems fitting for the default ‘elf’ race.

Got my engy’s name, Roger Bucklesby, from an image I found on tumblr or buzzfeed. There’s a pretty interesting story behind that as well.

First mesmer is called ‘Handsome Johnny’ kind of ironically since I made him with the black eye face. Name was inspired by an old folk song.

In retrospect I should have gone with a theme like Azure did. Makes it much easier for friends and guildies to recognize who you are.

The one exception is the character I am currently leveling so I can have a chronomaster. While her last name is the translation for clock her first name is that of my favourite new NPC, Sya.

I always use a first and last name and try to combine them thematically to the character. So for example my Charr Engineer is called “Ratchet Ironwrench”. “Ratchet” for being a fan of the series ratchet and clank and thematically the technophile attitude. “Ironwrench” – well “iron” fits to Charr stuff and “wrench” and engineer… you get the picture ^^

Let the list begin:
Male Norn Ranger: Bardy Belzebuson
Bardy is my RL last name and Belzebuson is a reference to my GW1 main and also my account name

Female Norn Mesmer: Valkiria Ravenkin
Valkiria is Valkyrie with a more portuguese spelling twist, Ravenkin is a nordic way to say that she is devote of the raven spirit.

Male Asura Thief: Barddy
Well … it is just my last name with an extra “d” to fit the asura name convention.

Female Asura Engineer: Oogah
That is quite nice, I tried to name her like the GW1 asura Oola and of course it was taken, then I changed the “l” for “g” and it was also taken, so I added a “h” in the end and there is it.

Male Sylvari Elementalist: Baridy
I read somewhere that Barid is Bard in celtic so I just added an “y” in the end to fit the Sylvari name convention and also resemble my last name.

Female Sylvari Guardian: Bardine
I was lacking creativity and just made a female version of Bardy

Male Charr Warrior: Belz Ironsoul
Belz is part of Belzebu and sound roman enough imo, and since my warrior is from the Iron Legion Ironsoul fit the name convention nicely.

Female Human Necromancer: Raquel Bardy
Well … this one is also quite interesting, my RL name is Rodrigo Bardy and my mother said that they picked my name before they knew what sex I would be when she was pregnant so they picked 1 male and 1 female name, Raquel Bardy would have been my name if I was born female

Male Human Guardian: Ahiru Darkwing
This is my placeholder for a tengu name and also my silver doubloon farmer, Ahiru is duck in Japanese, and tengu name convention is usually <Short Japenese name> <Avian part + Adjective> so I made a reference to Darkwing Duck

Those are my toons.

It’s also where we get Tuesday from. I think it’s interesting that 4 out of the 7 days of the week are named after Norse gods.

Zerina In Aeternum – Zerina doesn’t really mean anything, I just thought it sounded nice. In Aeternum basically means “eternal” which I thought was fitting since I played Guild Wars for 10 years now.

Alastrine Aeternum – Alastrine was the name of my mesmer in Guild Wars 1, Alastrine Isolde.

Thorsimund – Named after the Visigoth King Thorismund, (there seems to be two spellings of his name but I like the way I spelled it because I think it sounds better this way).

Asura characters: Zerina | Myndee | Rissa | Jaxxi | Feyyt | Bekka | Sixx | Akee | Tylee | Nuumy

This name i have comes in 2 parts.

The “Lioka” part was born in the first guildwars where I had to come up with a character name and stuck some random syllables together. The syllables stuck on my main character (monk) and I kept it ever since.

I’m also a huge fan of the Dynasty Warriors series, hence the “Qiao” part. The full name creates a third Qiao sister and my first personal fan-fic for Dynasty Warriors. I’ve kept the name since I created it. I only played out the fan fic in daydreams. I never wrote it to paper.

I like the gw2 lore surrounding names for Charr and Sylvari.

My favourite names of the 8 80s I have are:

Alys Malafaux, Human Mesmer. Spin of Alice from Alice in Wonderland and Malafide meaning untrustworthy, faux because she’s a mesmer.

Orion Tinkerpaw, Charr engineer. First name after the cat in Men In Black Tinkerpaw is self explanitory.

Nyxophelia, Sylvari Necromancer. Nyx meaning night, Ophelia is Greek for ‘help’. Ophelia was also the Lover of Hamlet in Shakespear who was driven insane.

Kyss Valkyr Norn Guardian. Kyss means winter, Valkyr, shortened from Valkyrie (norse) one of a host of female figures who chooses who lives and dies in battle.

Most of my character names are made to sound like real names belonging to their originating culture and fitting into world lore. So my norn ranger has names for herself and her pet garnered from an Old Norse dictionary site, my sylvari are all Arthurian in tone by using syllables that work together in Arthurian style (Briamor, Andret, Ysethe). Except for Briara, she’s using a name I had in DAoC for a plant creature, just feminizing “Briar.” My asura follow asuran naming rules (Merra and Froblekk). My charr is Talani Stormburn, originally Razorstorm. “Talani” was my first WoW alt’s name, a nelf druid, playing on “talon.”

But I do have two instances of outside inspiration. Make that three. Two of them are in WoW: I made my first real main in WoW when Farscape was on TV. A nelf priest engineer, I thought about how engineer stuff goes boom and what you would say and got “Frelle.” I added the e to feminize the Farscape cuss word. My second main, a belf mage, got her name because I had a gnome friend named Ela. Ela logged in, someone cried out in gchat “Issa Ela!” and I realized that Issaela was a fine name for my pending belf.

In GW2, in beta, it was darn hard to remember how to split item stacks. When reminded how, I realized “Altdrag Splitstack” sounded quite nornish and commented on this in a few places. Shortly after launch I went to make him. Someone had taken the name! I gave up a bit, but when I needed an engineer so as to work on all eight professions, I made him after all as “Altdragg Splitstack.” I actually like the double g better.

My humans are just culturally appropriate to their backgrounds. Donari Mal di Bette and his sister Salvina Lucia (di) Bette have mouthful names from being noble. David “Rafe” Raffino and Jin Macklin are commoners (Jin is a name I got from a Chinese names site, as she is of distant Canthan descent). Mirth the Mouse is a street rat who got her name from never smiling and always lurking around the edges of things. I confess I got “Mirth” from my 1980’s online name, which at the time I took from the comic book MAGE: The Hero Discovered, by Matt Wagner.

See, name inspiration can come from all over! You just have to tweak things to fit the naming style of the setting, and you’ll always be able to find a name. (Tweaking example: in high school I had a DnD ninja character that I thought myself terribly clever in naming Sosumi Idongishi. Say it out loud a time or two to see the original English phrase… I was young).

My account name is based off of two important images/elements from Stephen King’s Dark Tower series: the Rose, which is the Keystone World’s (our world’s) manifestation of The Dark Tower, which the main character is desperately trying to save.

My main necro’s name is now Alyssan Targaryen, so its origins are fairly obvious (an “alternate” spelling of a Targaryen named Alysanne Targaryen). Her first name, however, was Weepingus Angelus, and I honestly just picked that because I’d just finished watching one of the Weeping Angel episodes of Doctor Who.

My main warrior’s name is Goldilachs. I’m blonde IRL, and so I was called “goldilocks” pretty often as I was growing up. I decided to make my warrior’s appearance loosely based on my own and named her “Goldilachs” to both reference the “goldilocks” nickname and the German word for laughing (shortened to just “lach” to make the play on words work a bit better).

My thief is Ameiliana Ponderous. Fairly obvious reference to Doctor Who’s Amelia Pond.

My first mesmer’s name is Sicut Cervus, which loosely means “As a/the deer”. It’s the first two words of Psalm 42:1. At the time I made that character, I was studying Palestrina’s choral setting of that Psalm, and so I figured I’d name my Sylvari mesmer after it.

My second mesmer’s name is Pirate Jenni. It’s based off of the song “Pirate Jenny” from Threepenny Opera. She even wears the gem store pirate outfit.

For a while I had a norn ranger named Kalebana, which is a female twist on our younger child’s name. I ended up deleting that ranger and making a sylvari one that I named Lady Garden because that term amuses me so much; it also just happened to work well for a sylvari. :p

My engineer’s name is Muse of Satie. I made the name when I was going through a big Erik Satie phase.

My norn guardian is Doctor Elliot Reid, named for the Scrubs character. She has the same haircut, too.

My charr elementalist’s name is Wayfahrarer because she’s a wayfarer and was in a fahrar.

My asura guardian’s name is Out of Good Names. You can probably guess what she’s named that.

I name all my characters with RP trustworthy names that came simply out of my belly…

Krytans are basically inspired by English Names, so all my Humans have some kind of english sounding pre- and surname with a few exceptions of more fantasy based name inspirations …

stuff like:

Cassandra Lancaster
Sarah Hargraives
Pandora Sinclair
Artemis Gryffindor (that was once my GW1 Main, currently waiting for return)

these kind of names simply soudn the most elegant, fitting and fantasy like at the same time, while sounding mostly also realistically enough, that one could find some of those examples also as RL names easily except for those names, that have a fantasy connection somewhere.

However, with some names I made up a few years ago, I’m not happy with anymore, characters that will somewhere receive renames and work so far more like storages.

Sylvaris I make will always receib celtic/welsh names, as thats the origin of the sylvari name. my so far only Slyvari has the name Merridyll Cailleach.
In RP she would be called just Cailleach, but my sylvari likes the way how humen give themself names, same as my so far only Asura, cause they realize, that giving themself a surname is a way to become more unique simply.

With my Asura, I follwed the Asura naming style with Elyss Niarr.
My only Charr so far foolows also the typical charr naming style of giving them surnames, that are just merged words of two single words and in my sight, the only race, which should have these types of names, on other races these names just look unfitting and ridiculous to me.
My Charr has the name Lezarus Stahlrisser, whats in English as much as like “Lezarus Steelrifter”

My so far only Norn is one of the charas whose name I don’t like anymore…
Its Alfdis Regislaeif …with Norn I always will give them something that sounds like an old norse/valkyric name

and then I have 1 character so far, that I will make somewhen when I have the time ect. for it into a “Cosplay Character” of Saber from fate stay night, as I simply super love that character design <:3 : <<:3

Once HoT is out, and all the elite specs.. theres then far more reason to have even far more character slots hehe… must prepare good names gg

Personally I like the idea behind sub classes ~ quoted from Chris Whiteside

At first I was using different names for my characters around avatars from final fantasy. But that got to be confusing. So I rerolled several characters and used some name change contracts.

My first name on my characters is Vaelin from one of my favorite fantasy book series, Raven’s Shadow.

My last name changes and is always based on a “profession” in my other favorite book series, The Stormlight Archieves.

Guardian: Vaelin Skybreaker
Ele: Vaelin Stormblessed

My charr thief, is named Kitla Wildclaw, dunno where I go Kitla from it jus kinda happened and Wildclaw is the name of one of my GW1 characters.

My asura necro is named Zeefa… she actually had that name prior to my account and I regret using it for my account too as it implies she is my main which she has never been… anyways it is buttonmash name reajusted to fit with asura name conventions.

My norn ele is named Alva Gunnarsdottir, not sure why I chose Alva, other than it sounded nice, Gunnar is the actual name of my father and I am his daughter, so it made sense to me, went with the icelandic word for daughter rather than danish (which I am) or english as I thought it just sounded better (and icelandic is closer to the old nordic language, which the vikings would have spoken)

My human engineer is named Kiliasja, an old buttonmash name I created many years ago and still see use from time to time.

All in all I want my characters to have names that go reasonably well with lore of the race and

I try to keep all of my characters named appropriately to fit the lore of Tyria as best I can, so I don’t have a particular pattern to my naming scheme. These are just some of my many characters…

Leonard Kross (Human, Guardian)
Leonard is my middle name, and Kross was the surname of my necromancer from Guild Wars 1, which I had chosen at the time since it had a cryptic sound to it. This time around I figured it suited a Guardian better. Also, hence why it is my account name.

Yukie Utsumi (Human, Ranger)
She is named after a character from the “Battle Royale” novel/movie. For those of you familiar with the story, she is the charismatic leader of the lighthouse girls. Her pets are named after other characters from the book.

Gatlan Blastburn (Charr, Engineer)
Seeing as he is an engineer, I looked up the names of firearms, and came across the “Gatling gun”. I changed it slightly, but the essence of the word is still there.

Lily Nocturne and Tiarnan Sonata (Sylvari, Mesmer & Thief)
I decided to give my Sylvari makeshift code-names in place of surnames. Corresponding with their cycles of the day, I chose Nocturne and Sonata to represent them. I was planning on making two more Sylvari with symphonic names, and then I was going to create a private guild just for them and call it “Quartet”, but that idea never really came into fruition.

My creativity with names is usually limited to coming up with a couple of words I like or think are appropriate for the character and translating them into a different language. (Welsh, Latin and Quenyan are my usual ones to use.)

For example I wanted to make a character called Holly, but that was taken and I couldn’t think of a good last name. Then I remembered I always liked the latin word for holly – ilex. I looked up ivy on Wikipedia and Ilex Hedera was born.

Others I simply try to come up with something lore appropriate, like my charr thief Wraith Darkblade and my asuran guardian Xexxi.

My 2 mains are completely made up – Randulf Rawhide and Goliath Bill. No idea where the latter came from in my head (my name is not Bill and I’m average height!), but the former is a play on Gandalf when I played Lotro and Rawhide is because he often has a “gunslinger” play persona to him.

Latronius Wolfe is my thief. The name was inspired by Gene Wolfe’s Latro in the Mist books

Orpheus Argonaut is a greek mythological inspiration obviously

Titus Augustine popped into my head after reading Gormenghast. He’s a human noble with violet coloured eyes. The surname just popped into my head as a fit (I wanted Augustus but it was taken as a name)

Viktor Belmont is inspired by Castlevania

Enchantra Delacour (Human Mesmer): I kind of played off the word mesmerizing into enchanting and enchantress. Delacour was paying homage to Fleur Delacour from Harry Potter. :P

Cassidy A Fortuna (Sylvari Thief): Cassidy – Clever. Fortuna: Latin for luck. A thief has to be clever and lucky not to get caught.. (Oh ho ho ho!)

Blaer Quicksilver (Norn Ranger): I already knew I wanted a norn ranger so I went to the roots of Nordic names for Blaer – gentle breeze. I perceived rangers to be quick with their bow, hard to pin down and swift as the coursing river (sorry.. had to throw that in there).

Neptune Vasilias (Human Mesmer): Because.. RWBY!

Adonis Delacour (Human Mesmer – A trend.. or coincidence?): I referenced Adonis to the Greek mythology (in regards to beauty and desire) and made that character seem like a playboy in my guild.. or princely character like Tamaki Suoh from Ouran >.>!

I try to follow the racial rules whenever possible:

Asuran Engineer – Qwerkk
Asuran Elementalist – Knikk Knakk
Asuran Ranger – Kwatt (Also, pets are named Specimen Alpha, Beta, etc…)
Human Thief – Castiel Zu Heltzer (cause I miss Cantha)
Slyvari Mesmer – Omnomnomaly (okay, I don’t like Slyvari and this was to be mean XD)

Those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head.

Qwerkk – Asuran Engineer

Most of my character names were trying to make it “authentic” within their universe-

Human thief- Scarim Coral. Well ok he is an exception to my list cos the name is the same name I used on my assassin (my favourite character) from Guild Wars.

Maulder Mendblade, Darkarr Duskcaller and Steala Sharpclaw (surname is not original I know and I want to rename her if I ever get a name contract) are all Char which their names are usally roar like forname and their surname having the first part, warband and their profession within their band.

Farlan Raikarson- surname is usually related to their family/ ancestor in which case, son of Raikar, a warrior of my from Guild Wars (well ok his name is really Raiken but hey I imagine he had a son or grandson named Raikar).

Vintt and Clidd are Asura males as they usually have single syllable name but are usually sound sharp.

Galedyn and Aishlyne are suppose to be celtic/ nature like name for an Sylvari.

Take a language which sounds cool. For me it’s swedish (+ I speak it which helps).
So I use a swedish first name and a last name which describes my idea of the profession in a poetic swedish way.
Ex: Selja Vildsjäl (=wild soul) for my ranger, Ljusa Dunkel (Ljus=light, Dunkel=mild darkness) for my mesmer (somehow “light and darkness” is my feeling for mesmer, don’t ask why), Linda frostlöv (frost=frost, löv=leaf) for my ice-themed elementalist…
I also sometimes try to somewhat respect the racial feeling.

Jephiroth.3197

About 15 years ago I played my first MMO, DAoC. I couldn’t think of a name at all to start with, so I made a play on my RL name, Jeffrey, and came up with Jephrei. I used that name for about every mage character I’ve ever made. I have numerous iterations of the name for many other characters. (Jeph, Jepholas, Jephiir)

I eventually decided to play on my own name and Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII) and came up with Jephiroth. (Clone mesmer)

I’m a paramedic and one company that manufactures ambulances is called Traumahawk, which I really like. I’ve also been a falconer, so the name is really appealing to me. It is my rangers name.

I got on a Sylvari kick and my current two most played characters are Oaken Earthlore and Ashen Nightblade (guard and warrior)

Rotspore just happened to come to me one day, so I made a Necro with that name.

My engineer that rarely sees any time and is only level 68 is Mechgineer Lugnut. It’s a name that just came to me one day also. A boy once told me “you couldn’t fix a Lugnut if you had to” while working on a vehicle with my uncle. My uncle got a huge kick out of it and would call me Lugnut. He passed away a few years ago, so it’s nice to have that name.

My thief is named Hyde Moor, because I made him during the time you could be permanently stealthed.

Name selection is usually pretty hard for me, but there are several I really like.

Traumahawk: WvW Shout/Seed Sinister Druid
Ashen Mistwalker: WvW Tank/Crit Revenant
Oaken Earthlore: WvW Medi/Bunker Guardian

Inspired names?

My names always use latin words for “Soul” and “Core” (although some latin words I used can mean both of them at once), with Frost meaning cold and the feeling that I have abit issues displaying feelings towards strangers, acting quite cold as result.

Name itself began with Doom monsters “Lost Soul”.

I’m a casual PvE adventurer, I enjoy combat, adventure and helping, but not farming.
I rarely do PvP or Hard PvE, unless it’s organized.

That’s pretty much how I came up with this screen name. I had a character called Danielle (who is still my main RPG character) and my name is Katy, and I wanted an account name that encompassed both….and pretty much stopped thinking at that point.

Which is better than when I decided I wanted a name not tied to my RP character, and came up with Just_Me.

As an amateur writer/text-based Role-Player Names are very important to me and should invoke emotion and culture of the character I choose to make. My characters names often have “looks” associated with them so I have at the moment 16 characters (2 of every profession across two accounts). Some of my favorites are this though:

Main Account
Syndelle Djenikov (Human Elementalist) – Syndelle is a play on the name Sindel from Mortal Kombat, I love playing as her and I use the name Syndelle in almsot every Ethereal/Mage-like character I make in any game. D’Jenikov is a play on a couple surnames I love.

Esmeralda Vantier (Human Warrior) – It’s a name of one of my role-play characters who happened to be a little honey blonde-headed girl that grew up to wield a two-handed Sword named Illusia.

Gwendolynne Wolfe (Norn Guardian) – Gwendolynne is my online identity. She started out some 20-odd years ago as a character I made up and over the years seh morphed into a fantasy version of me. I almost always have a Gwendolynne (Wolfe) in any MMO I play. She is usually my main, and I go by the name Gwen Wolfe no matter what site it is (except things like work and college where I had to use my real name). More people call me Gwen now than actually know my real name.

Raevynne Valke (Norn Ranger) – Her first name is a misspelling of the word Raven, the Ash symbol was left out for ease of invites and so I just used a and e. I also love ‘ynne’ in names because of my affinity for the name Lynne. Valke is a Scandinavian/Nordic surname meaning Falcon, or Raven. Essentially she’s named Raven Raven, but that’s okay. It sounds pretty, and Raevynne is another role-playing character I’ve had for years, she drank the blood of an evil, but powerful king and went almost blind but gained Psionic abilities (Telepathy, Scrying, Aura Reading and Energy Siphon). She also wields a bow and uses her other senses to shoot. She can talk to animals and often has companions. So I felt it was fitting to make her a blind Norn Ranger who talks tot he Spirits, especially that of Raven.

A note about my Norn: Until the Revenant comes out I have not used the Patronymic/Matronymic Suffixes commonly used for Nordic Names. This is because I have yet to establish patronage for any of my characters. My Revenant, however is Gwen’s Daughter and as such will carry a given name. Gwen and Raevynne both chose their own last names after their victories in The Great Hunt, as was common for people who wish more individual names rather than family names. I have many Nordic Countries in my blood RL so it fascinated me to learn all of this stuff when thinking of names for my Norns.

Alt Account
Alexandrae Dionaea (Sylvari Ranger) – This is a scientific-Latin based name. Alexandrae is part of the scientific name of Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing, the biggest butterfly in the world. Dionaea is the Genus of the Venus Fly Trap. She is a pretty dark green Sylvari that wears several of the Carapace armor pieces. I also have her cameo in the Day Dreamer Outfit, Wings and she has the Day Dreamer Longbow.

Paragon of Gaia (Sylvari Guardian) – Paragon has meaning in Tyria lore as well as just being a cool word for Perfection, Heralded, Celebrated, etc. Gaia is a Greek Goddess often referred to as Mother Earth. Essentially my Guardian is the Perfect Protector of her Mother Tree.

Mordrem Rage (Sylvari Warrior)/Mordrem Fury (Sylvari Necro) – These two are my Modremoth-Themed Sylvari. Both have fallen to the Dragon’s Corruption and are themed accordingly by looks, armor sets, only the Warrior uses the Mordrem Weapons while my Necro is happy with The Crossing and keeping to dark and neon greens (she does have the visible Red Eyes though)

I really hope you know the origin of the name ‘Tyr’ – it’s a norse god.

Oh I’m well aware but as an… 8 year old I had never heard of him at the time

All my characters are femele.

Oona Boumba in a slang weird sort of way would mean one bomb. Where I somehow failed is that this is an Asura Guardian and not an Asura
Engineer.
Human Elemental: Luhany Lavabomb, lavabomb are molten rocks erupying from
a volcano.
Human Warrior: Molinah Moadhib, fictional distant relative of Paul Moad’hib.
Sylvari Mesmer: Moadina Moor, moor refers to plant.
Neithiri Nitedash: Neithiri is the fiest bane of the girl from Avatar and Nitedash because she’s a Thief.
Jakrita jumpshot is a Charr Ranger.
Tayana Twain is a Norn Necromancer who’s name is simislar to a singer.
Shaleen Starblast uninspired name for a Norn Engineer.
Far my future Sylvari Revenant Spookyn Spector as in Spook Inspector.
For a Revenent I thought it was pretty ok.

MithranArkanere.8957

Let’s see…

These are from a series of stories I wrote when I was a kid:

  • Mithrán S. Arkanere – Human elementalist . He’s supposed to be an elementalist, warrior, sorcerer and blacksmith. And… well… not human, but could be mistaken by one… I guess…
  • Gloriah D Arkangel – Human guardian – She’s supposed to be a cleric-wizard. Mithrán’s wife.
  • Mythic L Arkanere – Human warrior – He’s supposed to be some sort of paladin, but guardian was already picked. Mithráns second kid.
  • Joy B Arkanere – Human mesmer – She’s supposed to be a bard, but, oh ,well… she’s Mithráns younger child.
  • Calm B Arkanere – Human necromancer – She’s supposed to be something like a ‘spiritist’. She was a ritualist in GW1. The eldest of the three.
  • Meemah C Arkanere – Charr thief – Meemah is adopted. She’s supposed to be a small humanoid cat-like creature. Asura were not enough cat-like, so…
  • Belith Ímil – Human ranger – Well, we had a hit with this one. The original was a plain good ‘ol D&D-style ranger. Just like GW2’s! She’s Mythic’s love interest. Well, she seems to be more interested than him. He’s kind of curt and dry.
  • Mortan Malsane – Human thief – He’s supposed to be a hitman. He should be able to throw daggers around, shoot with guns and snipe with a rifle… I could use a rifle. He’s a weird and crazy one who sharpens his teeth to make them all shark-like, but then covers his mouth with the lapels of his coat. Why?
  • Terkyn Huggens – Norn warrior – This one is supposed to be an “Archon”. Some sort of juggernaut-like massive guy that uses his armor as a weapon. But also uses s a 2h axe… still far from that in GW2.
  • Hennky, asura thief; Elgadd, asura elementalist – These two asura are special in that they are both named after the same GW1 character: Henkrauser Elgado. Elgado is a crazy necromaner who eventually becomes a Lich and sets shop on a Tower making fun of adventurers who get in the tower. Some weird hobbies that one had.

Other asura use the typical one-word names.

  • Geeni – Engineer – This one was a must. No better name for an asura engineer than Geeni.
  • Hreezi – Guardian – I wanted Reevi, but that one was picked. So I tried Reezi, that one was too. I accidentally pressed H, that stuck. The H is silent…
  • Jaladd – Revenant- Jalad means “mist” in Sanskrit. And what is more “Mists Sans-skritt” than an asura revenant?

With charr I use warband names.

  • Wrench Blackpowder – Engineer – Tell me you have a better name for an Iron legion engineer, and you will be lying.
  • Stone Wardkeeper – Eementalist – He is modeled after GW1’s Wardkeeper charr. He also has the same horns, face, white pelt and black stripes and all. So… where are my Elementalists wards? What’s with guardians having those?
  • Tigris Bellatrix – Warrior. One of the rare charr with Latin names. Tiger Blood Legion!

With norn I trie to use nordic names.

  • Svipul Místdottir – Revenant – Svipul was a Valkyrie whose name meant “changeable”. Mist was another valkyrie, and her name meant… well, Mist.
  • Kára Jörthdottir – Ranger – Kára was a Valkyrie whose name meant “wild, stormy one”. Jörð was a jötunn, the personification of Earth, and the mother of Thor.
  • Hel Nordgud – Necromancer – Named after the goddess Hel, ruler of Hel. Nordgud is supposed to mean “Nerd God”, this is a pun on a GW1 character of mine called Noname Otakugami, as Otakugami doesn’t match anything but Canthan characters.

With sylvari I try to use Gaelic names:

  • Craobh Théile – Guardian – This is supposed to mean “Lime tree”, because shields used to be made of lime tree.
  • Iubhar – Ranger – This should mean Yew, a great wood for bows.
  • Lus Na Hoidhche – Mesmer- This should mean Belladonna. She’s a confusion-stacking mesmer.
  • Craohb Bróin – Necromancer – This guy’s name is supposed to mean Cypress.

No exceptions!

I like fitting pun names.

Human female Thief: Maya Sassin
Human male Engi: Shoots And Laughters
Asura female Mesmer: Psysmic Activities
Sylvari female Ele: Leaf Of Legend
Norm female Thief: Camille Yunkritts
Human male Guard: The Body Guardian

Most of my 13 80s follow this kind of pattern.

I typically make my names based on wordplay which have largely come first from my DnD/Pathfinder characters.

There’s my oldest, Héll Hunter (ranger) which has spanned many games, which is a pun as it’s a hunter/ranger, and it plays on a dual meaning of a pursuer of chaos/battle and a purger of evil,

Shívyr, a dagger-based assassin using ice magic/weapons – I’ll never stop using corrupted shards on this character :P (Shiver as in from the cold, and Shiv-er as one who uses a shiv).

Clarette is a blood-based character (in DnD was a melee mage) which in GW2 is a s/s bleed warrior. Claret is a red wine/a deep red/purple color and has been used commonly as a euphemism for blood.

The rest follow similar inspiration or are just copy-names taken from friends’ DnD characters to see how well I could re-create them.

I tried to stay as true to Guild Wars lore and naming conventions as possible.

Keirlann Aurion - I started playing Guild Wars in the year of its release, 2005, which was not long after the release of Tales of Symphonia on the GameCube. Kratos was my favorite character, so I ganked his last name to use on Soja Aurion, my Ranger in that game. Keirlann is his descendant, and also takes his first name from one I cobbled together from Anglo-Saxon elements for a Ranger in a Pathfinder game I had back in 2009.

Melandha - Sylvari Necromancer. As in melantha, a name originating from Greek mel and antha, dark and flower respectively. I could have taken the actual name, but the diphthong dh has a softer enunciation to it produced by pressing the tongue against the back of the teeth rather than the edges of them, and I liked that better. Also, it’s the name I created my Necromancer in beta with, and I got attached to it.

Griefer Flintfang - Warband naming conventions. I knew Engineer was going to be a tricksy class, so Griefer seemed appropriate. It was also the name of the lion like GM in Final Fantasy 8, although that was less an influence than the former reason. The surname is typical charr naming: warband + bynomic feature.

Catastrophist Hyppa - I created an asuran elementalist by sheer accident. I was messing with the character creator and I came up with a look I really liked. I went with ele. Her personality just seemed to come out through that. The idea is that she was a lecturer with the College of Dynamics before she was kicked out for her pyroclastic antics. The name “Hyppa” follows asuran female naming conventions, short and snappy and ending on a vowel with a double consonant in the middle, and it is partially inspired by Hypatia, the Greek philosopher and mathematician. ‘Catastrophist’ is a slur impugned on her by her fellow asurans which she took and wrapped around herself like a flag of honor.

That’s about a third of my characters. I might share more later.

The Crystal Desert beckons us. Ascension awaits us.
