Sup

So lately i’ve been getting alot of heat cause i’m talking my native language in map chat to others. People say they’re just “a clattering of letters with no meaning” which ultimately end up in reporting.

Now i dunno what’s up with all this intolerance towards other people, there is no specific server for my language and i’m part of a “community” server as u could call it for people from the Benelux.

I just wanna know if there actually is any rule against me talking in my own language to others. And with that i mean talking in a normal fashion about whatever and not using it to insult people or do anything that’s inappropriate.

Thanks

it tends to come quite a mess if everyone speaks their own language and no one understands each other.

at least that is my reason why i use english in map chat instead finnish.

I would see it as an unwritten etiquette that in international public (map) talk you speak English (you are from the Benelux, so that should really be no problem at all ;-) ). Feel free to use your own language in /say or whispers or whatsoever.

I do agree that reporting goes too far.

So, there is no rule against it, but it could be considered impolite to speak in your own language in the public channel.

Well it may be a bit naïve but people tend to overreact sometimes.

If I remember correctly Anet isn’t enforcing English in EU servers chats.

I don’t see talking own language in any chat as impolite or wrong in any way, nor I’d like to see players/Anet try to enforce any language.

I see it as impolite since the message in /map are directed to all players in the map, independent of their native language. If you speak to all people in the map, you should make sure all the people in the map can understand it.

The game plays a LOT better if you turn off map chat anyway.

Lol tell me about it, i split various chat channels into special tabs with one just for npcs which i pretty much stick to completely unless i am in a group in which case i use the tab i made for just party chat. Map chat is pretty much nothing but kitten so i mostly avoid it and only open it every now and then to see if any big events are going on.

It’s not against the rules. That said, if you start chatting in a foreign language, there will likely be someone who will make stupid comments about it. It’s not necessarily that they’re intolerant, though the idiot that reported you certainly was. It’s just that you’re on the internet, and people get stupid on the internet at times. If they can’t understand what you’re saying, and you’re saying it publicly, they’ll likely start chattering about it simply because it’s a topic that has presented itself.

There is no rule against talking to others in your own language. If someone is being abusive towards you in-game for doing so, please right-click on their name and report them.
