Invisible people - Short distance
This was a big sore point for me. It seems to me that the core of the game is the intension to change your visual appearance, but that the core mechanics of the game make it difficult to ever see other’s appearances. It’s like running through fog, except there is no fog, just figures coalescing and disappearing into nothingness. Felt pretty empty to me, particularly when you have to wait to get there on overflow, then you pop in and… nothing. I’ve never played an MMO where that was an issue, so it was impossible to get past.
I get this too, although not as bad. It probably has something to do with game still being cpu bound.
Quite annoying. I can play Skyrim with mods galore at almost max settings, but players in GW2 don’t draw-in for well over a minute sometimes on high settings around 30 fps.. I refuse to play on lower settings, due to how drastically the quality drops. Can’t play a fugly game and GW2 is very fugly on lower settings…besides, it doesn’t help with the draw in problems…the game doesn’t run any better. Its bad code, nothing more. Didn’t have this problem in WOW or WAR on a lower end machine years ago.
Didn’t they say it was a server thing, and they’re still working on tweaking the data sent to our clients?
I get this too and I kittening hate it. It only started after they went around jacking with the settings that spawned the wuvwuv issues.
It leaves a bad taste that top-tier PC builds can have a character run straight through Lion’s Arch, while taking bets on how many player characters actually show up.

it’s starting to make the rez time on SL look fast :o

Not really. I have it really bad sometimes, and I have a latest generation high end cpu. It seems to me it’s an issue with the servers, since it gets worse when more people are in a zone.
I am not defending A-Net, but rather explaining. Umbra Occlusion Culling or Hidden Surface Determination is what causes the issues in GW2. It’s actually a fairly commonly used technology across the PC, XBOX 360, and PS3 platforms. This technology will prevent your graphics adapter from rendering objects in which you will not see on the screen; such as objects just off to one side or ther other, or objects which are hidden behind another object.
From what I have read, it appears A-Net allows a maximum of 40 objects to be rendered at one time (however this is likely just speculation). What this means is if you have 60 PC’s & NPC’s on the screen at once, you will not see 20 of them (think massive WvW fight). I realize this is not the reason for this thread, however I felt it was important I put this paragraph in.
The issue you are seeing in major towns is the lag / delay of the third party culling as it occurs and determines what you should see. If you stand still, it will eventually catch up and be displayed. This is processing time this culling process takes to occur in areas with larger amounts of objects (because all objects must be factored prior to filtering). Remember, both NPC’s, PC’s, and possibly even world objects are factored and filtered accordingly. While you may only see 25 PC’s, there could very well be another 15 NPC’s and 10 objects. Objects likely take priority, leaving 10 NPC’s or PC’s to not be displayed.
As I said earlier, this technology is very common in many games. I suspect A-Net did not fully anticipate the size of crowds in events and now is stuck trudging forward until such a time the Umbra and A-Net can resolve it.

Oh yeah, it’s soo annyoing. Was really annoying at Pink Day in LA Event , where we couldn’t see the whole group because half of people were invisible ….
This really sux there are times where I’m fighting centaur and some of them don’t show up on my screen. Then I get kill and was like WTF?
It seems to have gotten worse for me, though not nearly as bad as aion was omg.

This is probably my single biggest issue with this game, it’s horrible in wvw and it’s really annoying during events or just standing around in LA. Rift had something similiar and that’s one of the reasons I don’t play that anymore.
This is soooooo annoying! I can’t see anyone in LA. And I have high end PC and play everthing on max settings with no other problems…
What I find more irritating is that it’s not an actual option or mechanic that can be used to help reduce the lag.
Like in WvW, why can’t I have the option to cull player models or something but keep their name and actions showing so I can have some FPS gains and still be able to see and fight them? Something Aion had.
Culling people completely makes it useless and really annoying.
