Is that the business model? I spent some gems on a wintersday mystery box and got some sweaters, socks, hats and 2 mortars. I feel exactly like I felt last time I played the slots in Vegas.

I was hoping to get a mini from the wintersday box but I’m not a gambling addict, so there’s no way I’m going to throw RL money at it hoping a RNG will spit out a mini. If there were a minis pack like there was at halloween I’d get some. If Anet wanted to make X dollars per mini, then why not just put the minis up for X dollars instead of leaving it up to a RNG. The wintersday box doesn’t make sense maybe I’m just not getting it.

Part of the monetization strategy is, yes, to pray on people who have an addiction to gambling.

It’s simply a new version of online gambling.

It’s also an easy way to keep people playing… but the “slot machine” costs are really high often. Vegas knows the money is in the penny slots and cheap games… and they at least have the decency to comp you as you’re handing them your money.

Yes, it’s an in-game lottery. IRL, how many financial planners would suggest that investing in lottery tickets is a good way to increase wealth? I suppose Anet is counting on a sufficient number of foolish players to profit from their lottery. Many states do this as well so I guess Anet feels their player base mirrors the general population in IQ.

^^ but gambling is also partly entertaining while being a huge waste in the long run. D2 had the best gambling system because gold was super easy to get while providing the best opportunity (albeit super low rate RNG) of getting godly circlets and such. There’s a trick to getting people to gamble, even if just a little bit.
