Guild Wars 2

I booted up gw2 earlier and for the first time in weeks, I had a real nice time online Got in some good fights on EB, is there anything better? Not likely :P

I’ve been playing Blade and Soul since early access and I can honestly say it’s the worst game I’ve ever played, I would actually have to class it as diabolical (in sarge voice). I’m gonna leave it at that.

Playing BnS has made me aware of just how bad a game can be. I’ts got me thinking: is gw2 the best MMO? Gw2 has alot going for it, it’s not perfect but it’s pretty good. If I had to describe it in one word, I would say it’s ‘fun’. My only gripe with it, is that there is now no effective way of ‘just playing’ the game for gold. You have to grind for it. Which would suck if I didn’t already have my WvW main fully geared. Sucks to be a new player but I guess they should have started playing sooner shrugs.

I haven’t played any other MMOs besides gw2 and BnS so I’m looking forward to reading the replies to this thread. Let me know what ye think

Not sure if it’s the Best … I like many more elements of it than I don’t like, so that’s probably why I continue playing it.

Labeling one MMO as the best is pretty much impossible. Identifying which MMO’s do what best is much easier. Eg; no MMO I know of can compete with Runescape when it comes to quests.

I’m not sure what GW2 does better than any other MMO.

Guild Wars 2 nails the combat, exploration, casual style, and grouping with other players extremely well. You can basically play everything with a friend except hearts. One thing I will mention that Guild Wars 2 isn’t as good are story quests.

I’m not talking about fetch quests, but quests from Runescape, that gives consistent lore, depth, and story. Guild Wars 2 does have that, but not as much as Runescape does. And even so, Runescape’s quests feel a lot more like actual exploration. In GW2, I can go to Auric Basin without doing the story, it doesn’t feel like “this quest has allowed me to explore this and that”. Or for that matter, GW2’s quests doesn’t have any old locations that will drastically change perspective because of a quest (Runescape’s The Wizard’s Tower).

Is blue the best color? Is chocolate the best flavor? Is there really an answer to an opinion?

It all depends what you are looking for in an MMO. BnS is an MMO built around a 3D fighting game engine with blocks and combos. Sadly the story is extremely linear, feels like you are on a ride that shuttles you from one area to the next where you do a bunch of side quests to earn gear and loot so you can progress on the main story quest. I found it to be “retro” compared to the free form PvE play of GW2.

I think those who played it to the cap in three weeks are done for now since I haven’t seen a queue in F2P in days.

Now I enjoy the relax play of GW2. The lack of PvE competing for mats or critters and shared loot. Now some don’t care for that. Some want open world PvP where gear might matter.

Now I’ve played a few other current F2P MMOs, most that were once subscription and are now have VIP “subscriptions” that allows those paying to ignore all the F2P walls erected when the game went F2P. They all feel like those coin operated binoculars whose timers are a little to short. You can “see” the game but you feel like you aren’t experiencing it as a F2P. And frankly I can’t afford to pay for multiple MMOs, even B2P.

For me GW2 is an oversized comfortable sweater. Sure the arms are a little long and you won’t be wearing it out of the house other than getting the mail but it would be something you would pack because it reminds you of home. As long as you aren’t going out somewhere.

bns is a old school concept combined with new age action based concept. it is not a game for everyone and it is slower pace compared to age of kungfu/wushu

That being said DDO comes in a close second despite beimg the polar opposite of GW2.

but in my opinion gw 2 is one of bests , mybe in my opinion gw 2 is best, but every1 have diffrent opinion,
if u split a game to diffrent aspect then u see mybe gw 2 isnt the best in every single one of it , but as a whole for me gw 2 is best, and i have 13 years exprience in mmo games .

Phasing, sprinting, wpvp, dungeons actually slated to be added in the future, and other memo fundamentals.

Heck people have been asking for mounts in gw2 since launch but instead we have a train wreck of traits, skills, runes, sh rooms, swiftness, and so forth where BNS just has sprint. GW2 will probably continue to oversaturate the game with speed buffs that could have all been bypassed with a mount or sprint system. GW2 feels like a testing ground because they never go for the simple solution nor do they ever keep with any idea long enough to actually refine it.

Yes by default. GW2 is simply the best MMO right now b/c there isn’t a single MMO you can name that can top GW2. GW2 gives you everything without a subscription. Best combat, world, community. Innovative system. Solid PvP. Ok ish WvW. Best PvE no question about that. The only complaint I have is the armor in this game. Anet can u stop giving the medium classes trench coats and dresses?

Specifically, BnS was developed by Team Bloodlust. Think of Team Bloodlust and ArenaNet as very different authors and their respective games as books… published by NCSoft.

I can’t seem to feel comfortable playing a game like Blade and Soul due to its anime graphics. I guess I’m too ‘western’ in my tastes – I need more realistic graphics and choice in my gameplay.

If WVW wasn’t so dead I would say that this is the best mmo out there. Although I like that there is ranked pvp now, it kind of filled the gap left by losing WVW to the new horribly designed maps.

But this game does have childish and uninspiring main quests pre-80. It’s so hard for me to ever care about doing the main quest for a character I’m leveling when it sounds like I am in a Disney movie for 10 year olds. I just roll my eyes when I hear the voice acting and script before HOT quests, which are much better.

But that’s a wrong comparison considering NCSoft completely owns both Team Bloodlust and ArenaNet, which is not the case with authors.

1. GW2 : Beautiful, stable, power cap, no sub, actively developed, large, good mechanics that avoid many of the social issues in other mmo (mob tagging, power, geardrama). WVW needs fixed.

2. ESO (similar, but engine performance needs a lot of work, and once you have done the questlines you wont go back, some power issues)

The rest are much of a muchness with various problems.

As other people have said it’s highly subjective. GW2 is certainly my favourite MMO, one of my favourite games of any kind, but it’s hard to say if it’s the best because everyone will have different standards.

“Best” is a matter of opinion. But, in my opinion, this one is the most enjoyable, and despite its flaws, it does more things well than other MMOs I’ve played.

If i couldn’t play gw2, idk which other mmo I would play and yes I’ve played them all. I guess I’d just play shooters all day and wait for Black Desert.

Gw2 has more things I like then I dislike and I’m a big fan of gw1. I’m interested in seeing where this game ends up and will always continue to play it even if newer games come out.

And gw2 has story? well yes you are right it has. But the story is straightforward, simple, predictable, nothing new, all the same from the very first day.
So we can safely say it’s not different then other mmo.

Now, if you are talking about gw1 then we can say you are right. gw1 has lore, gw2 doesn’t really have, it only uses lore of gw1, but if we are to be honest, it doesn’t upgrade it. It’s so small upgrade that it’s not important and new at all.

And you are wrong about mmo. mmo aren’t really rpgs.
Yes, most of mmo have story, but it was never really big (just few titles did great job on it), mmo is just a game where you can play for more then 50 hours, and it was always about progressing in some way.
Being it gear based, or skill based.

Most mmo are gear based progression.
Gw1 is one of that are skill based progression + nice achievement hunting.

gw2 should be the one with story progression, but you see, it doesn’t really works.
So, gw2 has no grind progression, has no skill progression (pvp isnt skill progression, its too unbalanced and meta restricted), but yea, u got your mastery progression (which noone cares about at all).

I don’t know, I haven’t found good mmo in last 5 years so it’s hard to do any comparisons if not even one mmo made me really happy.

gw1 is the last that did it (and it’s not even mmo) so I continue to play it.
and csgo too, seems like it gives me far more in terms of pvp and skill based pvp then gw2 ever will.

gw2 is fine mmo, but it lacks so much. Mostly, it lacks common sense from Anet (srsly, you read reddit but you aren’t official forum? that tells me all I need to know about how this game will go in next year)

By looking at the development over time one can see BNS was straightforward they offered people what they started off with and didn’t drastically change.

GW2 as an MMO doesn’t make any sense however it’s literally been a trainwreck of ideas and everything feels like an experiment in MMO design rather than a complete product. They dipped into just about everything but didn’t refine anything for instance we got some dungeons but instead of new dungeons we got fractals and instead of new fractals we got raids then they nerfed the former two to try and shovel people in to test out the concept of raids. Content as well from temporary, to perm, hybrid shop(Peeps have to buy season 2 who weren’t logged in) then to expansions. There isn’t one solid bit in this game.

NCsoft may not be very involved but given the nature of gw2 over the years I’m sure they’ve learned from this game to help mold their others because you don’t see this sort of thing in their other titles.

There is no “best” MMO. Every game has pros and cons. GW2 is a pretty decent game.

And why are we talking about BnS here? That auction loot system they have made me throw up. Not to mention, they have worse clipping issues than GW2. XD

Used to be the best MMO before WvW went to heaven.

Anyway in the beginning there was GW2 (great MMO). Then came along TESO (average MMO). Then what happened is that TESO really improved over the years while GW2 really deteriorated.
We’re at a point where TESO might be the best MMO currently available just because of the steady support it is receiving. It would say it’s at least as good as GW2, it does many things better. With Guild Wars 2 it seems they are just rushing things out and milking the brand while investing the minimum and not listening to the community.

Well they just released Direct X update and 64bit is on the way (already out on Mac).

There are lots of things I like and dislike about lots of MMOs, but for whatever reason GW2 is the only one I’ve stuck with for so long.

I love it a lot, and it’s my favorite MMO ever. But I have friends who hate it- so, to each their own.

As has been mentioned, the best MMO is entirely subjective. For me personally, yes it is the best MMO. It’s the one I’ve played the longest and the one I’ve had the most fun playing. I also like the fact that if I don’t fancy playing for a while, I don’t have a monthly subscription looming overhead.

I also enjoy The Secret World, but really feel that it would have been better as a purely single player game. GW2 manages to blend a compelling (in my opinion) solo experience with a generally friendly multiplayer experience.

So many MMOs are stupid dodging depends on a stat instead of timing a button press.

It’s hard to say what the best MMO is because there are always valid PvP balance complaints in every stage of every patch. PvP balance is the primary factor in determining what makes an MMO best.

It is interesting, fun and I enjoy it. It’s virtue is being free. However, it’s not a complete game by far, and praise should not wander into the lofty altitude of “best ever”.

Using a third tier game like BNS as a comparasion doesn’t move GW2 to best ever. It just moves it ahead of BNS.

If that’s your career in MMO’s in deciding “best” then you’re using a too thin of a sample size.

GW2 is a great game, but the state of PvP just saddens me x.×. I’ll also agree that BnS isn’t all that its cracked up to be, but to call it terrible? I wouldn’t go that far.

Because their other titles are developed by different developers who have different ideas. BnS is a very typical koream MMO. It doesn’t do anything unique and it’s a standard quest hub grind. It is a very very different beast to GW2. NCSoft, a corporate entity who aren’t responsible for the actual development of the games (and who have very little input into what Arenanet does with GW2) aren’t learning anything from anywhere… Also Wildstar, developed by another NCSoft subsidiary, clearly takes a lot from GW2. A lot…
Aside from Wildstar, NCSoft don’t actually have any new MMO’s which could have “learned” from GW2.

When I say MMO I mean MMORPG.

For me DDO wins the “Best MMO” title.
GW1 is second and GW2 third.
Age of Conan was great but the F2P model is crap.

GW2 is GREAT, BUT there are many obvious mistakes that the devs are making from the start that are holding GW2 back.

I think GW2 actually is the overall best MMO out currently, but it’s a pretty close race. I actually like the “Holy Trinity” style PvE slightly better in WoW but its subscription fee and atrociously stale/imbalanced PvP mean GW2 wins out for me overall. Other recent MMOs I’ve seen/played (ESO, Skyforge, Neverwinter, RIFT) are all clustered in one big third place pack for me for a variety of reasons I won’t bother getting into at the moment.

I have tried other games but keep coming back and playing this one. Latest being B&S, which I found a kittenildish in parts. Even then that was better than some other games I have played. ESO?

Overall it’s the game I’m still playing at the moment, so from that view it’s the best.
But it’s not the best it could be. There could always be improvements to game play.

Depends. For some it is, for others it isnt. I love the game but I wouldn’t say it’s any better than any of the other MMOs I play. Right now I play GW2, ESO, BnS, and WoW. I like them all…they all have pros, and are all lacking other things…including GW2. I will say though, that GW2 is the one where I most often end up feeling “hmm…bored…nothing fun to do”, hop around the fountains in LA for a bit, then log out. But maybe I’m burnt out and just need a break or something.

In short, I agree with the “no”.

My two cents on this. Sorry ANet if this hurts some…

GW2 has a poor story line. It has a lot of little issues that would not be there if the game was balanced in the first place. The game’s community can be good at times, and it can be uber toxic at other times. For proof, go to T2 server on some of the bad commanders that can get a lot of people following them, but often humiliate and use profanity a lot in teamspeak. Other times, the community is helpful and actually help teach others things. And the allowing people to play whatever they want is nice, but restricting you to the same race that you created the character on is down right disappointing to me.

I find GW2 did some things though right: no gear creep, not forcing content, allowing to play any roles you want (yet, detrimental if you are using it for healing and not Ele or druid). And well… that’s about it on the positive side. Oh and not forcing PvE and/or PvP. I like that. I hate it in AION back when it launched where it forced open world PvP. I also hate it in modern AION when it basically makes end game all about PvP. I mean its basically the only thing to do of interest at endgame in AION.

I still like TERA (but hate the gear creep, and the elitism). I still like Blade and Soul, but don’t prefer to play it but it has a better storyline, that I first learned when it was Korean only. I still like WoW, but hate its interface…

So why do I play GW2? It has just grown on me… And is the more cost effective game out there since its not forcing me to do any sort of subscription stuff.

Anet can u stop giving the medium classes trench coats and dresses? that is about what bugs me the most lol Meh Trench coats I hate them..like meh a wana be Neo character from the Matrix So need more armor Basic armors as I run alot of Rp characters and dress them like them Lina from Slayers Sailor Mars from sailor moon ect.

It’s got the best PvP in mmos. Mix of small and large scale. Competitive modes, no gear or levels required with sufficient rewards.
