Q:
“Both Captain’s Council candidates have promised to introduce a new rotation of exciting competitions each day. The initial rotation includes the well-loved Sanctum Sprint, Keg Brawl, Southsun Survival, and Crab Toss.” Does this mean Keg Brawl is about to be put on a rotation of temporary mini-games, as opposed to its current permanently playable position in Hoelbrak?

If I had to guess, they didn’t want the ‘mini-game’ crowd to be stretched out too thin across all of the games. So they will only have one game active at a time to keep full-ish teams.
Well thats how I read it. Only one game active at a time.
Hopefully they can make sure keg brawl is available on the days its in the daily achievements.
I’m going to assume that’s what it means, which means we’ll likely never see automated tournaments, social tools like private or custom matches, leader boards, or anything that gives competitive PvP-type games value outside of fun. Cause I’m kitten sure this company’s not in the business of producing fun anymore. Oh well.
On the plus side, it would be really nice if we could enter a Keg Brawl match from LA without having to travel to Hoelbrak each time.

I actually like the idea of there being more than only one city with people in it. Keg Brawl being in Lion’s Arch would only discourage that further.
I think that waypoint costs are the main hindrance to that. To save on money (and time), people basically cluster around Lion’s Arch as the hub city and try to avoid going to other cities unless they really have to. If waypoints were completely free, you’d see a lot more people traveling to whatever location caught their fancy.
…? There’s a free portal to Hoelbrak in Lion’s Arch.
Yes, but to get to Hoelbrak for a Keg Brawl match, you’d first need to travel to LA, then travel to Hoelbrak. Then WP to the closest WP to Keg Brawl. That’s too many loading screens for the average player to want to sit through.
If waypoints were free, then players could go straight to the Keg Brawl waypoint, do a few matches, then waypoint straight back to whatever map they were in before. I understand the role that waypoints play in acting as a gold sink, but I honestly think it’s more of a hindrance to creating a bustling, vibrant world than not.
I’m still pretty kitten ed they’d really just throw keg brawl in a lineup with all the other other activities that are going to be cycled out of the game. :/ They were supposed to have 30 permanent activities at launch. I don’t understand why they feel no need to explain to anyone of reasoning behind what they’re doing. This is absolutely stupid, and they’re really taking away all the things I like about this game.

The way keg brawl is right now…it sucks anyway. Half the time people aren’t even playing it. If they’re not throwing the ball over the fence to work on their achievements, then they’re in there just trying to get the daily by cooperating with the other team.
At off hours, on days when it’s not the daily, I hardly ever get a full group playing keg brawl. While you may like it, not enough people are going to play it as more and more mini games come out.
And this is somehow fixed by limiting the amount of time people have to earn achievements and/or play the game. There’s already threads about how the temporal nature of the living story mini games have encouraged achievement farming attitudes.
I really dislike when people point out how Keg Brawl is in a poor state. So was SPvP before it got custom arenas, spectator mode, far stronger tournament support, more maps, and bigger incentives to participate in. Keg Brawl hasn’t gotten an actual game play update since like late October, early November (and that was to semi-fix-but-not-really a completely broken exploit). The title was bugged for 6 months, Guardians can still have aegis from Virtue of Courage active in the match… people can leave the Arena at all, which I can’t even fathom why that’s not corrected…
We won’t know if Keg Brawl had the potential of being a worthwhile mini game to participate in if they didn’t put any effort whatsoever in making it playable. You’d think if one developer was in charge of Keg Brawl for 11 months, he’d at the very least be able to fix some of the trivial issues that’re plaguing the game type. How hard can it be to throw in an invisible wall? They’re all over the place in GW1 (lol).
And on top of all this, they’re going to make it unplayable to those that do enjoy it for potentially extended periods of time, all while not providing the most basic social tools like being able to play with your friends (which was one of the core ideologies this game was supposedly built on) or giving any reasoning for anything that’s happened or hasn’t happened all year that pertains to Keg Brawl and mini games like it? Awesome.
If more people loved Keg Brawl you’d probably have a point, but any game designer has limited hours to do stuff and keg brawl is not going to be one of their priorities. Particularly because part of what makes it broken in the way the game is designed itself. The ability to lob the way people do pretty much destroys the integrity of the game anyway.
Yeah, I get you like it, but you’re in a relatively small minority. If it weren’t for achievements and dailies, keg brawl, mostly likely, would have died long ago.
Even though it seems like you didn’t actually read my post, the fact remains, if they actually do the change mentioned in the OP, it will do absolutely nothing for Keg Brawl. It’ll just be admitting that they have no intentions of ever supporting it further than an excuse to give people 200 achievements points. And they won’t even briefly explain why lol

i think we’re gonna get new mini games dailies once the mini games rotation starts kicking in.
yes it does have lots of problems in its current state, making it temporary almost completely eliminates the chance of it receiving any kind of improvement
going from a permanent minigame to a minigame rotated in every few days further minimizes the amount anet gives a f uck
This is a great idea IMO.
They had something similar in GW1 where Zaishen’s would reward you with extra gold for doing specific missions, dungeons. Their quest would change daily and rewarded players who were willing to vary their play style.
I would love to see a Zhaithen style quest, uhmumm"clears throast"…i mean event system implemented.
Also did Nicholas have any kids who wanted to continue his legacy or we are out of luck there? =P
but its not like you can only do the target of the zaishen stuff on the quest day
the zaishen stuff is basically the gw2 daily

Just to clarify, this new system doesn’t have anything to do with the Zaishen quest more than the dailies do currently. All they’re achieving with removing Keg Brawl is making it not playable for potentially large periods of time for absolutely no reason at all.
But uhm, about Nicholas, I think you can visit his grave somewhere. Ebonhawke, mayhaps?
I think all the mini games should be added to private arenas. Let us play with friends, rather than just get thrown in at random.
It would also allow access to the games outside of the rotation if you really want it.
On the other hand, they could be making it where all four are going to be available, but each day there’s going to be a focus on a specific activity (say, the daily achievement has items for that specific activity) to drive players to that one.

I would prefer this.
Keg brawl is a horrible mini game. It is so broken it’s hilarious you can throw the keg from the middle to your npc that is how broken it is. Anet is understaffed so I don’t expect the bugs in it to be fixed anytime soon

People keep saying that like it’s easy to do. It really isn’t. Yes, you can practice the angle and get it down, but you’ve still got people trying to stop you, and it’s not a short cast.

there is a low skill cap in doing this, you basically make your move to dodge the crowd and give yourself enough of a gap to lob
classic lobber move is to pop ice and let it rip, easy as hell to do
it takes much more skill and coordination to actually pass to your teammates and drive down the field to score
think of it as the guy who can make full court shots every time in basketball, its just boring as hell to play against

lol @ Dave, love the signature.
Also, you’re totally correct. The skill level requirement for effective lobbing is almost next to zero… all you have to do is aim up and press 2… And the casting time for lob is faster than the casting time for Disarm, so there goes that argument. lol
