Is Maw bugged or working as intended?
The final boss event is at the end of a 4 event chain, so when you say “it hasn’t started” it might simply mean that one of the earlier events hasn’t been completed yet. Camping at the final boss location and waiting for the event to start won’t do anything unless other players are running the other events.

Considering 200-300 people are at that event waiting for it at any given time I think it would be fairly obvious that is not what he was talking about.
I’ll rephrase his question to a more direct version:
Why was the timer on the Maw event chain reduced to happen significantly less often?
I know I was talking about the first event of the chain, which involves the grawls attacking at Tors camp hasn’t started. It’s getting close to 2.5 hours on SBI and 2 hours on JQ. It’s okay if the timer was increased for the events but I just wanted to make sure everything was working properly.
To make you go do something else for a change … here’s hoping that they mess with all the timers and make them more randomised

300 people waiting for the event does not equal 300 people doing the pre-events.

Hard to do a pre-event when the pre-events don’t trigger. The little thing on the side showing the status of the chain never changes.
I noticed this yesterday too. I plunked my character in the area where the pre-event starts (unless they added another pre event somewhere on the map I wasn’t aware of).
I had the speakers up.. I went to chopped stuff up for dinner, watched TV, always had a clear view of the monitor.. and 4 hours nothing triggered. I went back through the map chatter and it clearly showed nothing happened as well.
The event was set to be on par with other “large” events, it’s less than 2 hours but the first event (the grawl attack) will not restart if another event in the chain is still running. So the worst case I can think of is that when the grawl attack recycled it saw that another event in the chain was running, and started the timer again.

Ok, good to know. And thanks for the quick responses.
according to the wiki there are 6 events preceding the boss, not 4, and once it starts the whole chain finishes in less than 5 minutes, so the “grawl attack not starting because another event in the chain is not running” doesn’t make any sense, unless there are other events linked to this that we don’t know about.

Uhm I don’t think the grawl attacking the camp is the first event in the chain. You need to clear out the grawl place with the marks on the walls and sacrificial offerings at the heart of corruption PoI to start the grawl attacking the camp.
Unless it happens to be a coincidence that every time I solo clean out that area, the grawl camp pre-event gets triggered.

I tried this a couple of hours ago and the same thing happened. I wasn’t sure if I’d triggered it or it was coincidental.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?

That may be the case, but there’s no “event” associated with clearing out the walls/offerings either as far as I’ve seen.

That could be the problem – if people stand around afk waiting for the event to start, and it’s not common knowledge that this particular activity triggers the event, then it won’t start. Not until someone actually exploring the area gets to the cave and starts the ball rolling.
I don’t want to reveal “what goes in the sausage” but there are several variables that affect how often some of the meta-events run. The sole change that was made to this event in this update was increasing the restart time for the event to make it comparable to other “boss” style meta events.

So the timer is now comparable to other boss events, but can we make the actual event comparable to other boss events and not something that can have the “boss” be zerg steamrolled in less than 15 seconds? It’s not even fun.
That would actually give people time to get there and make the 2 hour wait (or whatever the timer is now) actually feel like it’s worth it. The Wurm boss fight is even worse, you have to be camping there at the time of the pre-event start, basically, to even have a chance since the boss gets downed in <10 seconds.
I have a different question about the chest(s) for this event. Yesterday I completed the Maw chain on my home server and received the normal (in-world) chest plus the bonus (UI) chest. Then I guested to another server and completed the chain but received no chests (but I did get gold participation).
I understand that since the patch the bonus chest is once/account/day, but I thought that the in-world chest was supposed to still be available. Has this changed?
Truthfully I don’t see why we can’t have one event that runs frequently if the chest is now account bound. Not everyone is on for hours at a stretch. Let us have that one rare a day without having to camp some place 2 hours or more. We can then get it and go on to do other things.
Well I’ve sat at this event for over 4 hours now. Randomly running around to see if the pre-events were possibly left in limbo.. but to no avail. It’s supposed to mimic the dragon timers.
The event is not running, so I suppose this needs to be put on the back burner until they fix it.

Last week, there was a Wurm event on my server (Blackgate) where the Wurm died so fast the event never actually triggered and there was no chest. The Wurm was literally dead before it even spawned in all the way.
The Maw is only slightly better, I did the Maw earlier today and he was dead in about 10-12 seconds. As it is, I stopped doing the very last pre event where you destroy the 3 portals because if you’re too far away from the boss, you can’t get back in time to get in a hit before he dies. Both these ‘bosses’ need a serious buff.
Do you guys even read the information posted on wiki? http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Frozen_Maw It clearly states “To start the chain if it has not started yet, clear the Son of Svanir Tags and the Sacrificial Offerings at the grawl camp due south of the Heart of Corruption Point of Interest”… I have tested this and if the timer passed 2h and event didnt start yet then clear the camp.
Half the time by the time I get the shaman targeted he’s already dead.
This is a very sad nerf…
Maw was by far my favourite world event…because it triggered virtually every half-an-hour, so was very easy for busy WORKING people, with LIMITED free time to do once a day…
I cleared the grawl camp, erased the markings, destroyed the shrines…nothing.
waited about 3 hours total, the maw chain never started. HoD.
I’ve done this event probably 50-60 times in the past month.
When it’s in the window, the first event is the Grawl Killing near the Krennik waypoint. As far as I can tell, it just starts, there’s no prerequisites or I’m sure I would have noticed, or someone would have noticed.
At the moment, Maw is simply not starting. Something was changed other than the length of time between the event triggering, or it is bugged.
Might depend on server. I’ve done the maw on my server today (Tarnished Coast). What servers are people on who say it isn’t starting?
I was guesting on Fort Aspenwood earlier tonight and waited for like 90 minutes before giving up and going somewhere else. The new ‘window’ needs to be reduced. Nobody wants to stand around for up to an hour waiting for an event to start that could theoretically start at any moment. I don’t mind the 30 minute windows for Teq and SB, that seems about right. And the longer window for Jormag is fine since it’s a huge long event.
But Maw is like a 15 second fight, no need for such a huge window.
I think the whole point of this is to stop people from doing nothing but waiting around for events, or that event. While some people do like to do that, it’s probably not what Anet intended for a play style.
One of the big problems in recent times is people complaining about overflow servers and lag during events. I’m pretty sure Anet is trying to stop stuff like that (lag in the case of the Maw, not overflow) by making it less appealing as events go.
I mean, sure it was easy money, basically. Too easy for what you got, which is why everyone hung around there. Now Anet has made some changes to make it harder.
I’m not so sure that’s bad new, though it will annoy some people for sure.
Yesterday I was running around with my lvl20 mage, then people started yelling maw maw maw !! So I logged on my lvl80 for the hope getting the loot, but then I got put into an overflow since everyone started entering the area.
Then I was told that I should either wait another 2hrs or hope that it will commence in another guest server. Obviously I left since the game is becoming annoying.

If they did all boss event completely random it would promote more people to stand around waiting for it to start as that would be the only way you could know if it was about to start.
As of now if I see there is 1h until the pre event for a boss I want to kill then that means i got about 50min freetime to do what I want before going there and wait but if I didnt know how long until pre event then I would be forced to stand there waiting so I dont risk missing the event.

Personally I dont find dragon rewards to easy I rather find the other content lacking in that appartment asuming ofc that this game was not meant to be a farm game for hardcore gamers instead a more casual game.
Do I do cof p1 then i might get a rare once every 6-10 run in time that would be 1h-2h for each rare, if I farm one bugged event in orr so I got a constant supply of risen to kill non stopp then I got a rare once every 1h but I had 100-120%mf so it would actually be about 2h for each rare, this means even if I have to wait 1h for a boss to spawn it would still be twice as fast to get rares compared to any other content in the game thus many people waits for the events instead of doing other things.
So would they give the bonus chest for each dungeon path once a day/account, make jumping puzzles have about 50%(depending on difficult) chance for a rare once a day/account and farming for example orr would give about one rare for each 1h for 0% mf and non bugged events then there would be way less people doing the boss events as they are now not the only way to get high gear reward instead people could do more what they would like to do and still be rewarded.

Your first CoF run will net you two rares, since you can change in the tokens for level 70 rares. The next run will get you another rare. That’s three. Plus what drops of course.
Stop standing around then. Go do something else. For the folks that cry they have no time and “needed” the Maw on a fast timer, you could do a speed dungeon run in less time, get better loot and more money.
There are also sites to help you /lfg (ie like the timers for the dragons). The Maw was bugged in the sense that you got dragon rewards on a non-dragon timer. It was fixed, get used to it.

Standing around waiting for events is more fun that banging my head against the wall that is any dungeon. I’d rather be standing around alive than be dead, unressable and a weight to the other 4 guys running the dungeon.
I honestly don’t like this change, but since I think you can get the big chest more than once/day/event I can see why you had to do it.

Every dungeon run I"ve tried takes an hour+. I’ve never done a dungeon in even close to the 30mins the Maw respawned on before. Memorizing dungeons in order to speed run them is work, I do enough work when I’m working thank you.
Amazed by people who refuse to understand simple concepts.
You can still farm this event… the guaranteed rare is gone but you still get a chest with a chance of rares. With an extremely short timer, this is still an issue to be abused by potential"farmers"…
It makes no sense for these world events to vary so much in difficulty and timers…if they do, the easy ones will get done and the harder ones will not…it’s very simple!
If anything, you should be encouraging them to continue the changes and make all of these encounters equally semi-challenging and on similar timers… it will spread people out and perhaps there will be less overflow issues. I, for one, even though i love loots, hope they take a pass at making them all at least engaging if not challenging (like the Temple encounters are now)… and make the timers even more consistent.
30 min is to short.
2 hrs is to long.
1 hr seems about right.
that way people can work on their daily around there then when it triggers they can quickly pop to it without wasting a day…

There’s a dozen (or more) of these events, currently. There is almost always more than one up or coming up… with guesting to shore things up you can pretty much always do them. What you want are some ‘easy’ ones with short timers and then a bunch that people will rarely do…. longer timers means people split up and more variety in which ones get done.
It seems maybe this topic went askew. Some of us were wondering if something happened to the maw, as it hadn’t started after 3 or 4 hours. Not whether it should start in 30 minutes or 2 hours.

CoF path 1 takes 15 minutes tops. Really. It’s one of the easier dungeons. You learn the run, you can do it in 15 minutes. You’ll get at least 2 rares for your effort, if you want to spend your tokens that way, plus whatever drops.
If you run it a second time, you get another rare (due to the diminishing returns on the tokens).
Some people can run this dungeon in under ten minutes. Maybe it’ll take you 20 the first time. But it’s doable.
People in my guild run that dungeon sometimes at night, before bed to relax.
So people will quit doing Maw and find another world boss to fight.

I believe you’re both forgetting that these are meta world boss events held inside starter areas of the Tyrian map. Same with the fire elemental at Thaumanova. Of course they’re gonna drop like a lead balloon with so many L80’s on them at once, all for the sake of the loot. The fire ele is actually probably the hardest one of those examples to get to drop, the others are soft by comparison. Even with the appropriate level scaling in effect, we do a heap more damage than if the bosses were expecting starter characters.
I thought the boss events like this were supposed to be appropriately scaled to the number of people participating in them? My question is, are the bosses in these starter areas expecting L80’s to thump the crap out of them?

Have we talked about this before? Rote memorization, like what you’re talking about, is not fun for me especially in video games. Same reason I wouldn’t play the highest level of Guitar Hero, you go past skill into just memorizing patterns…that’s not fun, it’s work.
So yes, you CAN do this, but it’s unfun for me. Standing around waiting for a boss is more fun than memorizing a dungeon. Maybe if I was 10-15 years younger I’d have a different opinion.
Can’t say this makes me happy, I usually play no more that 60 – 90 minutes per day, really just enough time to the the daily and maybe a couple of other small things. As a Casual player I apprecaited the fact that I could do maw typically at least once if not twice with two different characters. Typically the Maw event for me was used to help clear up dailies such as Champion event or Group events. I play early morning which helps minimize the fact that in the evening I can barely get a hit in with the mega-amount of players all farming maw.
This to me may be the deal breaker in moving on to the next MMO, Don’t get me wrong I think GW2 is a great game, but they keep nerfing the game from casual to hard core. Not sure what I want to do at this point, but there are some potential games coming that are looking mighty good.

But, one of the reasons they buffed the chests was to get people to go do stuff outside of cursed shore….to actually play other areas of the game. It shouldn’t matter where the fight is, if there are 100 lvl 80 characters in the participation area of the event then the event should scale difficulty to the level of fighting 100 lvl 80 characters. Hell, the svanir boss at the north end of the map is harder than Maw, and he doesn’t even have a chest.
As for the fire ele, they should make it as difficult as it was in beta. That was the only time it was challenging or fun. These are world bosses, supposed to be the baddest of the bad, the most feared enemies in the game, and all I do on my elementalist for the fire ele is stand right in the middle of it and spam my aoe skills….I maybe get hit once, but get right back up, use my heal skill, and keep on spamming.
It’s a joke and if they are going to keep these bosses a joke then they should drop the timer back down closer to where it was because they are not on par with other world bosses.
Just waited 1 1/2 hours for the Maw to start up, don’t like that one bit. The “boss” dies in 15-30 seconds and it’s over. I agree with everyone else that’s saying it’s not fun. THAT IS NOT WORTH WAITING FOR! It’s not worth scheduling time to go do it. It needs to be a better/more engaging fight, as it is right now there’s really no point to the chest. Heck at this point I’d rather drop the chest down to a lower quality chest and make the event a shorter timer rather than the way it is now.

They changed one event chain and that’s a deal breaker for you? Really? You think it’s a great game but they changed a dynamic event chain to be less often and suddenly any enjoyment you can get from the game is gone.
I’d probably try to redefine what makes games fun for me if that’s the case.
I did the Maw yesterday on Seafarers Rest.
I had to ‘kick it off’ by killing the grawl in the cave just to the south, started right away then.
But, if Anet read this I want to register that I want them to restore the Maw to doable every half an hour, with rewards account bound to once a day, there was no need to extend timer.
Loads of people loved doing the Maw, also lower levels, new players really liked it as well…so reconsider on this change please, pretty please with bells on top?
