Q:

If I think I have any good idea for improving the game. Is there anyway to speak to them directly? (via forum message or any other way)

Thanx ahead

A:

In fact it says somewhere on the site that for legal reasons if you email them a suggestion they’ll delete it without reading and if you post it to them they’ll return it unopened. They will only take suggestions and feedback through the website, which in practice means this forum and very occasionally polls on the main site.

Which is because the website Terms of Use includes this:
“However, by submitting User Submissions to ArenaNet, you hereby grant ArenaNet a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, broadcast, license, post, sell, translate, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the User Submissions for any purpose whatsoever, commercial or otherwise, in any medium now known or hereafter devised, without compensation or credit to the provider of the User Submissions.”

In other words if you post a suggestion here they automatically have permission to use it. If you submit it another way they would have to seek your permission separately and may need to pay you for it.

In Practice

They do read the forum, and they have taken suggestions from here before. The best thing to do is to make sure you post it in the right section, give it a clear title “cool idea” or “suggestion” is not helpful, “New Collection idea” or “Suggestion for a Current Event” is.

Make sure you explain your suggestion and the background to it in full. Don’t assume everyone knows about the problem you want to fix and why it’s annoying, or understands why the new thing would be really fun.

Also bear in mind your suggestion is never going to be used exactly as you first write it, if nothing else Anet will put their own spin on it. It’s also much more likely to be used if a lot of people show interest. Both of which mean if people start replying and saying how they’d do it differently or pointing out potential problems this is not a bad thing. This kind of discussion shows how many people are interested in the idea (far more than people simply posting “I agree” and can lead to creating a modified version of your original suggestion which is more likely to work for the game and all the players and therefore is more likely to be used.

If I think I have any good idea for improving the game

No offense and all, but every single person who makes a suggestion on the forum thinks he has a good idea for improving the game. The forum is exactly the place to put your idea. The devs can’t be contacted by each person with a good idea. It would take up too much of their time.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Yup, make a thread with [Suggestion] in the title and brace yourself for more feedback than you could ever want. But good suggestions will reach the devs.

There are Stickies for certain categories of suggestions. The Devs purportedly do read those.

Good luck.

I logged in just to say everyone does have good ideas to improve the game.

The issue is these improvement request have existed since launch and people have posted for things like templates since launch. Those people quit cause nothing ever happens and all these new players see the exact same problems with the exact same solution day in and day out till they to leave. Even those going on about dead horses have left and now a three to four year old suggestion is brand new since none of the vets are around anymore.

I guarantee that people would still leave the game even if all the ideas they themselves proposed had been implemented. People get bored with games or excited by new ones. Real Lives™ interfere with gaming or we grow up and like more mature games (like buying nicer clothes and learning to skydive).

I guarantee further that ANet would also like to implement some of these ideas, including build templates. They haven’t because they haven’t figured out how to do it in a way that improves the game enough to justify the hours needed to make it happen. Sure, there are some ideas that ANet just doesn’t understand or misunderstands or plain gets wrong. But given how much people like this game (and how disappointed some of us get when ANet makes mistakes), ANet mostly gets things right, most of the time.

In the end, I’d much rather see ANet decide what’s important. Players have good ideas, but we also have some boneheaded ones. We also have trouble prioritizing and thinking of how different goals and mechanics synergize or conflict with each other.

This is often described with a metaphor that is both true and witty,
That a camel is a horse that was designed by committee.

tl;dr post your ideas to the forums; ANet will read and they just might include it in the game in the future.

If you logged in specifically to say that everyone has good ideas, then you logged in to say that without thinking it through. People have ideas but not all the ideas they have are good. They range from amazingly bad to really good. However even if everyone did have A+ stellar ideas, they still need to post them on the forums because

1) that’s one of the reasons why there is a forum. To post ideas and get feedback from others.
2) the devs don’t have the time to be individually contacted and listen to each and every A+ stellar idea that comes across someone’s mind.

Also, the ideas may be great but the work to put them in game may be more than what’s reasonable. Not every legitimately good idea will make its way into the game if the amount of work required to implement it is to much.

As devs have said about problems with implementing some of the ideas that people have come up with

…veritable bugfest that would ensue from altering a system that has years of work built on top of it…

…players clamoring for every fix/feature under the sun so we have to do a ton of prioritizing. Game development is never plain and simple…

…encounter a ton of programing challenges and bugs from altering a core mechanic of the game and the years of code built on top of it. Every player and many npcs use items, so the wrong bug slipping through can have a major impact on everyone in the game. Not to mention finding that bug could be like searching for a needle in a haystack…

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

^Hey! That looks somehow familiar. ; )

@OP: You can only post your suggestion, hope it gets a lot of positive feedback, and that the Devs agree, find time to implement it in a way that works with the rest of the game, and determine it is cost/time/labor effective.

Good luck.

Logically, wouldn’t you say they would make more money if they didn’t ignore suggestions?

I cant agree that PvE gets all the attention when PvE balance is changed only to affect PvP.
There may be fewer players in PvP but it holds the highest concern for the Devs, clearly.

Those are two different concepts:

  • PvE gets more attention from more developers more often than PvP.
  • All things being equal, non-split skill changes have critical impact on the quality of PvP and, more often than not, only quality-of-life impact on PvE. Accordingly, ANet could spend 0.00001% of the time on PvP and we’d still end up with some skills being changed to make PvP better (even as they hurt PvE in some way).

I certainly hate things like confusion being OP in PvP and WvW, while being next to useless in PvE. That won’t make it evidence that the devs focus more attention on PvP
