Is an engineer going AFK with turrets up considered an exploit?
It’s not an exploit to do turrents on autofire, but ANet has posted that if you go AFK, it’s a breach, and subject to disciplinary action.
Turrets die usually before the mob does. (In my pre80 experience anyway.)
There are no unintended features, turrets are meant to shoot regardless of player interaction, so of course it’s not an exploit. Now, they don’t stand forever, how is the player keeping them up? Either way, I wouldn’t recommend any form of AFK-leveling, you never know.
where’s the quote button?
Oh right, I have to post in a thread first.

Can I get a link to this?
It’s not an exploit to leave the turret out and go afk.
However, turrets have a duration limit (5 mins?). So they need a bot to keep them up. Also, you can look closely at the turret and see it’s overload animation running repeatedly. These both mean they’ve got a bot macro hitting the turret button constantly. Report them.

Did they add a timer to turrets? Because when I rolled an engie at launch I would plant a Thumper/Rocket/Rifle/Healing turret cluster in the middle of a big mob spawn to farm materials for crafting skills, and they stayed up pretty much indefinitely with the turret auto-repair trait healing them between fights. I’d be there pitching in with my rifle and drawing mobs to the cluster, but if I had to get up for a moment to use the bathroom or grab a drink they’d hold their own.
Then I figured out this wasn’t the best way to farm stuff or the most fun I’d ever had in a video game, so I rolled a Guardian and haven’t touched the engineer in weeks… >.<

No, there is no five minute timer. I just put down a few turrets in a safe area and they stayed up for over fifteen minutes. I don’t know where people get this stuff that they post as fact.
Of course, without the trait that heals them, they will probably be killed eventually, but I meant while using that trait and in an area where they are unlikely to get killed, particularly low level zones.
Report them. Let’s make the lives of those that hunts real threats a hell, so that real exploiters like teleporting hackers manage to get their way even longer.
There’s no timer on turrets. With the healing and toughness talents a turret can last for a very long time specially in lower level maps. Besides abilities can be set on auto use and that will replace a lost turret once off the cooldown.

Not if you put them just outside a busy event or farm area…
I have confirmation from a dev that it is considered exploiting as it is no different than a macro. He mentioned that there would likely be disciplinary action, likely a warning at first and up from there.
All in all, don’t do it. It really is no different than using a macro/bot. When you’re playing the game, you’re suppose to be playing it.

Was it a really a dev or just a clueless GM? Any proof of this exchange?
How in the hell is turrets functioning as they should, considered an exploit? If there is no third party software involved how in the world is that harming anyone, in any way at all? This entire subject is just so ridiculous. I really want a source on this bs about turrets considered exploit if you’re afking.
not fair to call everyone who uses this method botting.
what if i am playing guild wars 2 in a window, i have my engineer set up some turrets in some relatively safe place then then i proceed to read some manga in a web browser.
then occasionally checking the guild wars 2 window for guild chats and see how the turrets are doing. collecting loot if any.
surely this is not considered as botting?

For privacy reasons I’m not giving names as it was his playable character. He had his ArenaNet tag and was telling us what he did on the game, and that he was a developer. He said what I said. It’s against the rules. If you don’t think it is, go ahead and cheat and be banned for it. That can be your proof.

if that is true then it is rather ridiculous since them turrets is working as intended.

Yep I did saw that post too. Just remember when you do get banned don’t be crying that you didn’t do anything wrong and that you didn’t know it was a bannable offense because you do know. We told you so.

The subject was actually brought up. You’re more than welcome to go afk if emergencies happen. This is why there is an afk timer. But that is not the problem. People are putting up turrets, alt-tabing, checking facebook or whatever and only going back to Guild Wars 2 to put up new turrets. This is not playing the game, thus it is exploiting. I didn’t say it was botting, I said it was no different (besides the 3rd party programs if you want to get literal about it). You’re not playing the game at all when you use this method, yet you gain from it. That is cheating. It is against the rules.
You can sit here and argue about it all you want. I’m not ArenaNet. I don’t make up the rules, nor do I have any way of punishing people for breaking rules besides reporting them, just like everyone else here who is not an ArenaNet member. But, I am telling you right now, they consider it against the rules. They consider it to be exploiting.
You can argue with me all you’d like, it’s not going to change a thing. As I said, I’m not ArenaNet, I didn’t make up the rules. But it seems to me you don’t have emergencies that you speak of. Seems to me you often use this exploit and are mad because someones telling you the truth that it’s an exploit and ArenaNet doesn’t want people doing that.
In response to your second post towards me, I already said I’m going to keep his information private. It’s bad enough that I said I talked to a developer ingame. ArenaNet browses these forums. They’ll respond if they see fit.

Yes, it’s dirty cheating by putting up Turrets in a completely accessible area, with choosing Traits that ArenaNet gave you to auto-heal them and reduce damage taken, and letting their natural AI attack targets. Yup, dirty cheating.
Get off your soapbox.

Thats what they consider. Go talk to them not me. But yeah, you are cheating because you aren’t playing the game. Why do you get to earn that loot and experience/karma when you aren’t playing the game? The turrets are suppose to help your character in combat. They aren’t suppose to do all the work.

You want selective reasoning, I’ve got my own too.
Honestly, I’d imagine it’s frowned on, at the least. Whether it’s bannable or not I don’t know.
But is that honestly the way you want to play the game? By dropping turrets, going afk and coming back just to pick up loot you didn’t really earn? Where’s the fun in that?
darn it, so i can’t do this while reading a book watching the screen? but i guess is a bit unfair for other professions.

If he had his ArenaNet tag then he isn’t expecting privacy. He’s a representative of the company while displaying that tag.
Without any proof, you’re practically impersonating a GM, which gets banned quicker than botting

Do you even know how turrets work? There is no “put your turrets on autofire”. I’ll quote the Mod for you:
Anything that automates game play to the point where you are able to not actually play the game as-intended (example: you can walk away from it) is considered a breach of the User Agreement.
I bolded the important part you seem to be missing.
Well, if you are intentionally going afk in an effective farming spot where your turrets will never die, I guess that could get you in trouble. However just going afk is not against the rules afaik and if you happen to have turrets up well then whatever… oh by the way you can’t loot while afk so the only thing you would get is an extremely slow rate of experience. I also notice I get kicked from the game due to inactivity while afk and I doubt your turrets count as your character being active, so you will eventually get kicked.
Not to mention DR… now that I think of all this, there is no way you could get in trouble for it.
Thats what they consider. Go talk to them not me. But yeah, you are cheating because you aren’t playing the game. Why do you get to earn that loot and experience/karma when you aren’t playing the game? The turrets are suppose to help your character in combat. They aren’t suppose to do all the work.

What if I forget to bring down a turret before logging out? Happens a lot of times.
My take on the matter : it’s just stupid considering this an exploit. If turrets are OP and can’t be taken down by mobs nerf them. Besides you would get xp but no loot and (I’m not sure if this happens already) the turret should auto destroy after a couple of minutes.
What’s the problem or is it that game changing even if you had a turret farming for 2 mins?
What I know is I shouldn’t as a player have to worry about having to remember if I left my turret up or not all the time.

I guess going afk on waypoints as a ranger is going to get your account suspended or banned. Give me a break they are taking this way to far why implement a pet defensive mode if you are going to ban people for it. I’d rather my pet defend me than come back to broken armor because hint hint

No they are not saying that at all. It would be ridiculous. They are saying that using 3rd party EXTERNAL programs like autoclick bots, and going AFK, is an exploit.
Dropping down turrets and going AFK is normal gameplay. You are not cheating and it is no ones business if you are at the keyboard or not all the time. Would be a really stupid and slow way to level up anyway, I doubt anyone is using it in this way. I would probably use that if I had to go away for a couple of minutes, just to make sure i don’t die meanwhile.
Lol….just train a big mob or mobs to him…get him offed and go about your business.

There’s an Anet post responding to a Ranger who asked if he could do this same thing with traps. They point-blank stated it was use of normal in game mechanics, and therefore not a violation.
Is it considered an exploit when engineers go AFK with turrets up? This is just something that I have been wondering about. I would think that it is not an exploit. I am just curious what the official stance on it is. I’ve never done it, but I’ve seen other people doing it. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to report it or not.
No, when in doubt don’t report.
Lol….just train a big mob or mobs to him…get him offed and go about your business.
And how does him being AFK hurt him in any way?
I assume this entire post has to do with the botted Kessex Hills bridge event.
It’s not a matter of “I just put out my turrets and check them once in awhile”. That’s bullkitten, because turrets even when fully traited go down like tissue paper when focused on and without micro management. The problem is that, especially for this specific event, people put their turrets in a place where the centaurs cannot access them and then they just go AFK.
This actually is exploiting.
Why would they even allow you to set your turret to autocast if you get banned for doing so?

I can see this as being an “unforseen problem” in need of addressing, but I’d ask everyone to be careful about demanding nerfs. Nerfs have destroyed many a game, and since engineers are already third from the bottom on the Reddit class-satisfaction forum, as well as one of the least-played classes overall according to published Anet stats. Nerfing an already unpopular class for something a few of them do could easily kill the profession, plus it could become a really slippery slope.
Time limits on turrets? Yessir, I can agree with that wholeheartedly. It doesn’t remove any utility or functionality, just makes the player have to be a little more attentive. Plus, the animations on most of them show turning hand-cranks like they’re wind-up spring-operated machines, so points for science (new thought, make it so they don’t expire, just have to be manually rewound after 5 minutes or so?). Nerfing the turrets themselves or their traits though, is a very bad idea. I honestly found turrets to be very lackluster compared to other builds in the vast majority of situations on my engie as it is, and they were one of the reasons I chose the profession.

Anything that enables a person to play the game without actually playing the game is a problem, such as using third party programs to automate game play.
Going AFK with turrets running isn’t technically an exploit, but players should be playing the game in good faith.
