well in all fairness if he’s got spare time then why not read the forums for suggestions he could potentially take to his team give us what we want.

In all fairness, who are you to tell him what to do with his spare time? When you bought GW2, you didn’t buy the lives of the people who work there.

Why don’t you go knit scarves for orphans? You clearly have some spare time.

Because it’s, get this HIS free time. He’s doing something HE enjoys on his free time. How would you feel about someone telling you what to do on YOUR free time?

I know you’re off today, but maybe you should work anyway, for free. He did something fun, because he wanted to. Why anyone should have a problem with this is beyond me.

Originally, we just wanted to build out a couple sprites to fake the game in After Effects, but one of the cinematic artists on my team (Delly Sartika) has long harbored an interest in building his own retro platformer, so he volunteered to build out a playable version of our totally fake game.

The version that you see in the commercial was just the first draft. It took Delly about three weeks of work to flesh out the final version. Without further ado, I present the fully realized vision of Rytlock’s Critter Rampage, which I invite you all to play. Good luck, and try not to smash your keyboard in a fit of rage.

No where in that post does it say he did it in his/her free time? I’d really love to know where you get your inside info?

I liked SAB as a mini game, but i totally can see why players would be mad at what they see as wasted time on this, over potential serious fixes to the game.. especially in its current condition..

Ah, my bad on this one. The SAB thing was done in some guys’ spare time. This one is a bit different.

The guy who did this is a member of the cinematic’s team. He’s not going to be making new content. He’s making cinematics for content that other people program. Which means that until his talents are called upon to do cinematics, he probably has quite a bit of down time.

At any rate, this entire conversation is bizarre. What is a cinematics guy going to do all by himself? He’s not doing profession balance. He’s not making dungeons.

Admittedly I was still thinking about people complaining about SAB (in an interview the guy said he did it in his spare time), but anyway it’s ridiculous.

The OP wants new context from a guy who does cut scenes.

It’s pretty stupid to complain about one person from anet doing a minigame like this by himself and the fact that its a cinematic artist makes it even more stupid.

cinematic artists only creates content to other developers content, they only work when they are needed and they have a lot of free time because of that.

One of those artists with the free time decided to use that to create something small and fun for you guys and you rage about it, beautiful.

Maybe you don’t find it fun and thats fine, people have their opinions, but making the flash minigame did not damage anything related to the development of GW2 itself.
Bug fixes and new content are not what cinematic artists do.

The bad thing on these forums there is no down rating so whom ever post what ever random complain it will always in the end get at least the first level of thumbs up making look like the poster had a point.

This is what set Anet apart from other gaming community they like to have fun playing games and not just making games for purely money. If any thing that you think its odd show that the current gaming companies have all but bran washed you into thinking that making games and playing games are not the same thing and the ones making games its ok if they do not play games out side of what they are trying to do a PR trip.

This, again? The world doesn’t revolve around you. If some cinematics artist felt like doing a mini game, so be it. You don’t get to tell developers what they have to do. Want to do that? Buy out the majority of the shares for Anet, then speak to them directly.

Jesus H. Development houses have teams. The different teams have different jobs. Sometimes they overlap, often they don’t. When one team is working on one thing (new short term content) another team entirely is working on something else (the next big release).

Seeing someone make something like this doesn’t mean they’re taking resources away from the important stuff.

It’s like no one who plays MMOs has ever had a real job.

Whenever I see one of these threads appear I end up thinking I’m glad I don’t have to deal with customers like this. Or rather my customers don’t get enough detail on what I do to be able to make complaints like this.

I’m sure a lot of them would consider the new software I’ve been working on for doing quarterly reports and the “how to” guide that goes with it a waste of time that could be better spent on something else (like their personal requests) even though in the long run it will save my entire department a lot of time and effort.

I’m sure the same could be said for your job too, whatever it is. Imagine if your customers/clients/end users or whoever were looking over your shoulder. Do you honestly think they could do a better job of telling you what you should be spending your time on, and how much time to spend on it than you or your boss?

And unless your answer is “yes, definitely” then what the heck makes you think you’re in any position to tell anyone at Anet how to do their job?

I’m not expecting people to do this on their spare time but I hands-down have to agree with the OP on the front that they seriously have a managerial problem on their hands and they seriously need to listen to their playerbase or they’ll eventually end up with hardly anyone. I can’t imagine how they have a revenue at this point. All three big guilds I was part of have vanished entirely because people who were playing got tired of the Guild Warriors 2 nonsense and the lack of concern when it came to balance thus creating a rift for the three weakest classes in the game. They also told me they were tired of not getting any of the promised content we were waiting for since launch. Everything’s been focused on gimmic store items or the tiny bit of content in the living world series lately.

If they actually kept in touch with their players they might have a chance of turning this thing around.

The first thing I’d suggest they do is open a PTR so they can do proper testing on pvp.

The second thing is to properly code the abilities in PVP PVE so they are completely separate.

The third thing i’d suggest is to spend a serious amount of time fixing the glaring problems with the necro ranger and engineer and the AI’s of their respective pets.

Those three things right there would make this game sooooooooo much better and might actually bring back the people who left this game in disgust because they never got an answer from moderators or devs anywhere while they watched patch after patch ignoring their concerns.

PTR’s are worse than useless. Just look at WoW – it’s last expac was on PTR for 6 months and launched with the buggiest mess you ever saw. They still have not cleaned up those bugs, the balance is out of control and when they opened the first raid, a low level paladin solo’d the raid boss LOL.

Complete waste of time and resources. All it does is give players that have the time to play it an inside peek to manipulate their AH.

There was a poster over at /players/ asking for advice on getting into game development. One of the paths consider was customer support. This would probably be a good demonstration of why that is a bad idea.

One thing some people should understand is that once a game is running and more contents gets added, it gets harder and harder to update/add new content that is directly tied in to the existing content. This is why even if they are ready to add something ingame, it takes longer and longer to do testing/debugging.

SAB and other web browser game are just fillers so that people have something new to do while waiting for the new content to be launched. It is not something they invested a lot of time and resources on, it is just side-projects.

Rytlock’s Critter Rampage Game!

I spend a lot of time on the forums reading people suggestions for IN-GAME suggestions, most of which arenanet don’t bother to post a reply to… even if it’s just a simple “Sorry that won’t work because…” = Topic Closed
or “Good Idea, we will discuss it and keep you posted on any further news on this idea” = Topic Closed.

So anyway my point is simple, why are arenanet spending time making things like Rytlock’s Critter Rampage Game INCLUDING promotional video’s when there are so many unhappy players who are crying out for updates and new content.

For those of you who don’t know Rytlock’s Critter Rampage Game is not part of the GW2 client and can only be played from the GW2 website as a flash game.

So anyway I’m personally pretty miffed that Arenanet are wasting time making stupid flash games rather than answering our forum posts and acting on our suggestions and giving us more of what we want instead of crap we never asked for nor do we need nor does it contribute to anything inside GW2…

If your talking IP rights / etc., the EULA that you agree to when buying the game / joining the forums should cover that.

Anything I post is just the opinion of a very vocal minority of 1.

I’m always baffled by this attitude.

This was done in private time – and you simply don’t have a right to complain about that. If an arenanet employee wants to work 9-5 and spend the rest of his time playing warcraft, even, that’s entirely his choice – let alone working on cool game-related things of his own choice.

Even if it wasn’t done on private time, though.. you still don’t got a leg to stand on. Arenanet isn’t going to exclusively develop one thing at a time, and they aren’t going to exclusively give time to your own particular favorite activities. They get to choose what’s worth doing, and I think they’re cool for expanding the scope of activities in-game as well as out. Frankly, it’s a kitten-load better than just releasing raid after raid after raid, isn’t it?

As it was said before…if that was done in private time or not, that doesn’t matter, ANET has a TON of employees, it isn’t like…OK everyone, the next update is we are gonna Update Rangers, I want EVERYONE working on Rangers, you can’t work on what you specialize in, you can only work on RANGER stuff or you will be fired…RANGER-RIFIC! (Old video reference)

ANET has a team for every topic of the game, they have a team for WvW, Jumping Puzzles, Special Events like the SAB, yes, it took a tiny bit of money to make these things, but it isn’t like ANET shutdown to only work on this and the status of their other projects just stopped…

/facepalm

The guy who made the game made on his time because he WANTED to since it was his hobby. Props to the guy for making it, have yet to get around to playing myself but in due time.
