Q:

Hi,

would it be against the TOS lending/borrowing another player gold for an interest rate?

Eg: Give me 200G and get back 300G in 4 weeks.

Disclaimer:
I totally understand that lending would only make sense if you know the persons very well because of the risk AND that borrowing smth and then running away would in no way be okay/fair/whatever.

I also don’t want to start a discussion about how to collect gold in other ways is much more faster. I am just interested in if this scenario would be something against the TOS or not.

I can’t see any reason why this behaviour would exploid the game in any way (Except maybe getting around the TX-Fees in the TP), but could understand that ANet would not want to handle the support-effort which may result from this.

A:

It’s not against the TOS to lend gold to other players.

But it’s not officially supported either. Which means if you lend someone gold and they don’t pay you back Anet won’t help you. You can report the other person for scamming (with appropriate evidence, e.g. screenshots of them agreeing to pay you back) and they may get a warning or a ban if it’s a repeat offence, but you will not get your gold back.

Also if you lend a lot of gold to other players in quick succession (which leads to a lot of gold being sent to and from your account) you may be flagged as a possible gold seller. Therefore I’d highly recommend you take screenshots of your agreements in case you ever need to prove to support that these were just loans to friends and you weren’t paying or receiving real-life money (or anything else) in return.

Also be aware there’s a limit on how much gold you can send or receive (I think it’s 500g a week but I’m not sure) so you may have to space it out anyway.

They shouldent have to handle support effort for this kind of thing. If you want to gamble with your money trying to get others to pay you interest for a loan go ahead just dont go whining to support when it back fires.

You dont see people who gamble in the forge 500 1k 2k gold going to support saying they need help getting money back its the same thing in my mind.

The reason lending stores work irl is cause the lender can take action. They can sezze your asests., garnish wages, and take you to court. In game you have none of those options. Al l you could do in game is wisper them each day asking for a payment until they block you and then you wouldn’t even have that.

That is a problem you can solve by only lending people you really trust or by some kind of WOT. The Bitcoin-Community is doing it for a long time.. But apart from that, this was not my question. I only asked about the TOS-Aspect.

This is why I would only consider lending to somebody that I had a good relationship with and had known for a while- preferably somebody I also knew in real-life.

They’d be less likely to break the contract then as there is also a personal investment there- they are more likely to feel guilty if they took the money and ran.

Also, moreover, A-net can punish somebody who doesn’t fulfil an agreement or trade. Like Danikat said, you would not be reimbursed, but the perpetrator could be suspended or banned (dependent on frequency or severity, I suppose).

One could argue that your selling them currency in a way, like loansharks do.

Isn’t this buy/sell/auction about real money? Or at least ment as: don’t trade our ip-stuff/ingame stuff with something which is not our ip/ingame stuff.

If this wasn’t the case “items, objects” would also only be okay via the TP. If so they would not have created the possibility to attach items to messages, right?

That refers to selling it for real life money. Otherwise it could also be interpreted to mean that using the trading post is against the TOS because you’re selling in-game items for gold.

I’m fairly certain that this rule is in regard to real money trading. The part I’ve italicised refers to real-life money.

If you tried to make the rule apply to gold, then nobody would be able to purchase anything in-game. The rule doesn’t make sense in that context.

EDIT: just saw that Danikat jumped in before me

Not quite. That bit refers to in-game currency as it is encompassed within Game Content. This section of the TOS refers to RMT issues and the terms “buy, sell, transfer, or auction” refer to using real-life currency.

Regarding the OP, it’s not against the TOS, but you cannot enforce you will get money back. Them mentioning that they will pay you back isn’t necessarily enough evidence to get them banned/suspended due to scamming, as there is no set deadline on when they’ll give back your money or make payments, and if a payment is late, it doesn’t constitute account suspension, and reporting too soon on this would be argued as abuse of the support feature, especially if this expands to many different players.

Really, unless people scam on massive scales from many players, they do/should not receive account suspension on the basis that the distributing party is not using endorsed features of the game to secure safe transactions and is performing trades outside of official systems as their own risk.

It’s not against ToS to loan people gold. However Anet wont get involved if they don’t pay you back. It’s more a mutual/private agreement.

A member of my guild loans my guilds leader gold quite frequently, and guild leader stated he wanted to pay 10% interest on it for daily/weekly payments, or whatever suited them. It’s all just a laugh though because he mails the loan with an ‘Official bank of _’ mail, with the agreement on it, followed by some joke or another about stingy Asuras who will chase him for the gold.

We are a very tight nit guild though, and our guild master is just Godlike.

Tldr: Loaner beware.

Kitten.
