Is crafting worth it for casuals?
I wouldn’t say crafting is worth it, the crafting materials however are worth saving up to sell.
It’s only worth it if you have a specific reason for it, such as wanting to craft something in particular, wanting the exp to level, or you want to try crafting items to make money. Otherwise, no.
ANet may give it to you.
Certain items can only be acquired through crafting, so should you ever desire said items, you will need to have leveled crafting.
Some find it easier/more interesting to craft as they go….some prefer to do it all at once, later.
Good luck.

I agree with this, exactly.
If you want ascended weapons/armour in the future it’s worth it. But for now you can wait and just buy what you need from the TP. Just have fun exploring, doing events and such.

I would say that you can dabble in cooking and one of the weapon creation crafts to make low level food and potions/crystals/stones for the +10% Exp they can give. Beyond that, I’d actually suggest that you hold off on serious crafting for now.
Later, you may find yourself looking for some crafting-only items. When that time comes, you can focus yourself on just that craft, and have a stockpile of materials for use in leveling it to where you need to be. Trying to train up crafts with no clear goal in mind will just burn up the resources faster, leaving you with more that you need to buy from the trading post to get what you want.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
You should craft if any of the following are true:
- You have more time than gold to spend.
- You like the process.
- You enjoy making the stuff that your characters use.
- You plan to make ascended or legendary gear.
Otherwise, you should sell your mats (at a custom offer) and buy what you need for your characters. It will save you lots of time.
Depending on the item, the savings from crafting is anywhere from nothing to minimal to nominal and is only sometimes a huge savings (predominantly for time-gated materials).

The only one I can really think of as being worthwhile is cooking. If you use the all hearts version it’s the cheapest one, currently less than 5 gold. Bring able to craft your own food is frequently useful and often cheaper if you want one of the more popular items.

As a casual player myself I think it’s worth it.
Once you get used to the pattern it’s easy to do (with the exception of cooking, which doesn’t have a pattern) and it can be done a little bit at a time or in longer sessions depending on what you feel like doing. I tend to forget about it for weeks or months until I suspect I’ve built up some materials then go and level a craft until I run out of something I need, then drop it again. Other people might do a couple of recipes every day.
You won’t need the vast majority of the things you make. But it’s extremely useful to have the crafts levelled up so that when you do want something that needs to be crafted (or is just easier to craft than get another way) you have the option available to you.
When I was levelling weaponsmith I didn’t think I’d actually use it, but I wanted to level all the crafting professions for the sake of completeness. Then I got my elementalist to level 80 and decided fire and ice daggers would look good. Rather than spend over 100g on Jormag’s Needle and over 1000g on the Fused Dagger, or grind dungeons for the Kodan and Molten ones (which IMO don’t look as good), I could simply (and relatively cheaply) craft myself a Corrupted Shard and Primordus Dagger. The total cost of the materials I didn’t already have sitting in my bank was about 30g.

I craft because I enjoy it. It probably isn’t worth it though if you look at it from a strictly time-related or gold-related activity. It can get very expensive to get to maximum level.
I have played for almost three years and I rarely run past a tree or plant or mineral node without harvesting. I rarely sell any of my materials so, for me, it is a good way of levelling a character and using up the mats I have. I mostly salvage anything I craft though.
It is just another part of the game which is not necessary to do unless you want to.

If ascended crafting is an eventual goal for you then you probably should work a bit on crafting in the professions you will need for that. Nothing says you have to sit and do marathon crafting. Plan your time for when it is easiest to craft (and if you have the materials).
Do your research with the wiki and crafting guides and plan out what you want to accomplish in the time you set aside to craft. You can also level up your character(s) while doing that.
Make sure you have the materials needed before starting so when out and about doing the things you like to do harvest everything you can and when you have enough for the bit you want to do then you can run in and get it done in a few minutes and then get to what other things you wish to do in your time available. If nothing else, it will add variety to your activities. Nothing is neater than when you craft something for yourself that is useful or something you can sell and that people want which can translate into monies to get more crafting materials.
I don’t want to create a new topic and sorry for that but does new experience/heroic booster affect crafting? Thank you in advance.
Crafting from a use/cost perspective:
* Usually the materials cost more than just buying the item.
* Big gold sink, unless you have the patience of a kitten.
* You will almost always benefit more from selling the mats on TP and buy the item you want.
Reasons to do crafting:
* XP
* Title (Master Crafter)
* Craft specific items you can’t buy (Celestial, Ascended, Legendary etc)
Took me 2 years before I finished maxing my first craft. Did finally get all of them maxed, and it was the most expensive thing I’ve done in the game yet >_< The only crafting I can recommend is Chef, It is kinda fun trying to figure out new receipts for that one, the others follows the same predictable pattern and just gets boring for me. I’ve renamed "Discovery Panel" to "RSI Panel myself. :p
I mainly use crafting to make Celestial stat gear, especially the box of full celestial armor.

I have all mine to at least 400 and some to 500. Now it isn’t something I use everyday. However when I needed it, I had the crafting ability to make it. Made ascended weapons for my chars. Crafted my armor way back then. Crafted the ambrite weapons when they came out. Make food or other nourishments whenever I want them.
Most of the stuff I craft I could buy and probably much cheaper than the cost to max crafting and then to craft. But it is nice to have the ability and the option. If you think that you’ll craft any of your gear or make the new items such as the Ambrite weapons, then go ahead and level your crafting.

Depends what kind of a casual gamer you are. Are you one that intends to play gw2 for years. I mean like casuals that for example still play since gw2 release. Or are you a casual who plays only for some weeks/months?
If you are going to play for years: craft! Get all disciplines to 500. you will always be able to craft special items or expensive one’s and you even can get alot of gold with crafting.
If you won’t play gw2 for years: don’t craft. The ‘leveling’ costs would be higher than everything you would ever again through it. (Besides that the most boring part in crafting is the leveling to 500)
