Is holding down right mouse button...
your character only turns when you start to move. ive seen the character turn when i was moving the camera with the rmb but only a few times and when i was climbing/jumping/standing awkwardly on things (ie, didnt seem intended).
its hard to remember we’re alive for the last time

Yeah that’s what I was thinking, a few times coming out of water my character will turn while holding the right mouse button standing still but then after some combat it seems to bug out again and stops working, I have even tried 3 different mice same thing, I even messed around with mouse polling and no luck.
I really wish they make is so our character turns while holding RMB standing still, this tends to mess me up in PVP allot.
I don’t understand what you mean. WHen I hold right-click, and move my mouse, the camera turns, whether I move or stand still.

I mean when you hold down the right mouse button standing still and turn the camera, your screen moves but your character stays in a fixed direction, the way I am use to is when you hold down the right mouse button standing still or moving your character turns in the direction your camera is facing.
That isn’t the case with Gw2 and I am not sure if it’s a bug because sometimes it will turn my camera when holding down the RMB standing still then reverts back to the so called bugged version after a short time.
I use the right mouse button all the time and no its not a bug.
and the character not turning with the camera while not moving a bug? I have searched the web with no luck, I have even seen this question asked before but not reply.
I would really like an official reply on this.
You think it`s a bug because your brain is used to console garbage games.
Normal games work like GW 2 and it`s how it should work.

Dunno. The most common behavior i have seen is that holding down left mouse button move the camera only, right moves both camera and character.

This. Anet just decided to do it a bit differently, for better or worse. Took a little getting used to at first, but now it feels relatively normal (though I do go back and forth between GW2 and WoW, so still feels a little odd at times). Personally I would have preferred left mouse camera, right mouse turn regardless of motion, but it is what it is.
It’s a little different, but doesn’t take much getting used to.
Turning with right mouse button doesn’t turn your character while standing still. However if you then start walking forward, you’ll start walking in the direction the camera is facing (with RMB)
Ya, Gw2 controls felt a little… off to me at first (actually the first beta weekend I almost wrote the game off entirely because it felt like it was having an identity crisis between being an action combat " intuitive aiming" game and pretty much your traditional point and click; still feels this way, but I’ve gotten used to it enough now).
Personally, I would have preferred combat mode
Being able to accurately aim and change targets intuitively, like in real life, is how targeting should be done. I shouldn’t be sitting there watching rapid fire have 50% of its shots attacking a dead body because it’s “locked on” to them; I should be able to aim and re-aim attacks.

I wasn’t aware that EQ2, WoW, TOR, Secret World, City of Heroes/Villains, etc were all console garbage games.
Seeing as how GW2 is the ONLY mmo I know that has this awkward setup…I think you might be a bit off as to your definition of ‘normal’.
That type of camera control was made because of the limitations of consoles and then passed on to other games. If you didn`t notice, console garbage is influencing PC games a lot, and not for the better.
Actually, come to think of it, it`s really sad that someone could consider PC camera controls a bug. I`m glad at least Anet knows the difference even if you don`t appreciate it.
Oh I see, it’s like the camera is attached to the character’s head.
I don’t think there’s anything wrogn with either setup. But it isn’t logical for it to use one mode when moving and another mode when standing still.
You will just have to use left-click to turn in those cases I guess.

Other than GW2, what PC game has left-click and right-click both turn just the camera when standing still, but left-click turn just the camera and right-click turn the whole character when moving?
I don’t know if it’s a “bug”, but I find it non-intuitive myself.
Edited to add: And how do you make your character rotate in place in this game?
(edited by Jinx.7945)
I may be mistaken, but I think SWTOR uses similar controls. Left mouse turns character, right mouse turns camera, and you hold down both for movement.
In SWTOR, holding down the right mouse button and moving the mouse makes your character spin in place. Holding down the left mouse button and moving the mouse turns the camera only.
There’s no actual point in not allowing the character to turn in place via right mouse button, but it would really improve control if you could do that because when using many cone AoEs (most of which are melee autoattacks that hit 3 targets), your character automatically faces the selected target. It’s common in PVE that you’re standing still and there are 2 or more mobs next to you and said 2 (for example) mobs are spaced out so your cone AoE doesn’t hit both of them because it’s centered on one, while both would get hit if it was centered between them. This problem would be solved if holding down the right mouse button actually kept your character turned in that direction for that kind of attacks (ranged attacks like projectiles obviously not included).
Said problem can be overcome by constantly strafing left and right (or moving back and forth, but it’s more difficult to stay roughly in the same place because of different speeds), but it is annoying and doesn’t give the impression of a well made game.
That’s also the reason it’s so difficult to hit objects (like AC burrows) with melee weapons unless you’re always moving so your character faces the direction of the camera, although considering how easy they are to “Miss”, the hitboxes of those great big objects need work.
I feel that this is a non-issue. Either stop playing due to this or get used to it. If I ever noticed it being “different” it must have taken me a minute to get used to it because it was never noticed. I feel that it makes more sense this way. Why would my character stand in place spinning in circles all of the time? Do it in real life and tell me that it doesn’t look stupid lol.

It has nothing to do with consoles. PC mouse turn has been around since the early 90’s long before the PC started getting any console ports or consoles got PC ports. We have had turn on the spot controls since the days of doom, everquest and might & magic.
The Guild Wars 2 mouse turn setup is a step backwards in mouse controls as it removes the option of turning on the spot. Something thats usefull in PVP and for any class that has positional damage. If we wanted mouse freelook/freecamera there has been a extra option for that in other earlyer MMO’s. So infact we have lost a control setup and gained nothing.

If someones behind you, you turn around. You don’t run in a circle till your facing the person.
Why not? Is the person behind you just going to stand still and wait for you to face him? You face him not only by swinging the mouse around but also by stepping forward/backward and strafing to match his movements. If you’re standing absolutely still while you turn, you’ve already lost. That’s why it’s a non-issue.

This is a fairly ignorant response. It fails to account for the ‘very’ annoying conal based attacks. Let’s use engineer for an example. Flamethrower versus 3 mobs. Mobs run at you and you spray em down and all is ok, then they reach you and spread out around you, you start to back up so they can line up a bit more, and you try to spray around a little bit so at least you can hit them all a little bit if not the full blast. But nope, see you had one targeted on your left, so when you turn to the right to try to hit the others, it does nothing, not even miss message pops up, and the one you had targeted, gets spammed with miss messages. This is a dreadfully annoying mechanic, I constantly have to hit escape to unselect targets so that I can spray the flames indiscriminately, it works but it’s a pita work around, half the time causing me to open the escape menu.
This is one weapon attack on one class, these types of abilities are all over in this game and it is quite annoying. Ele fire breath, firegrab. Necro has a offhand conal attack, cant recall the name at the moment, but those are some examples effected by this. It’s simply quality of life issue and if you are already unaffected by it then perhaps spouting negative elite nonsense is just that, nonsense.
Now it may be that they did this as a design decision for making it easier to land positional based attacks and flanking bonuses, and I don’t think they even have animations built in for this, they seem to be very particular about animations and it would probably clash with the rest of the game’s aesthetics to have a character spin like it’s on a spinning plate or something. eq2 had characters kind of spin on one heel type animation which wasn’t bad. There’s also games with built in blocks on spinning like a 100 rotations a second like you could in wow, you try to spin superfast and the camera would sort of stutter and not spin you, but if you did it a little bit slower you could rotate just fine. I think that’s a good fix for the positional attack problem.
This post got way bigger than I intended. So tl/dr, it sucks but there’s probably a reason for it, I’m sure they can come up with fixes for it if they wanted.
Edit: I should also add that the only way to truly use flamethrower autoattack effectively is to have no target selected, problem is the number 2 attack that shoots a fireball will go directly into the ground at your feet with no target. It’s just shortsighted design in this particular case and something engi’s been complaining about since the beginning.

So why you have autotargeting enabled?
Turning solve would solve nothing because in fight you never (should) stand still like stone. And in your example problem was autotargeting(which you can disable) and even if as you want your character would turn with camera he would still miss since you have target selected. And since you targeted sth that’s behind you, you miss.
Turning with camera has nothing to do with your example, if you just disable “autotargeting” and in case you posted you will hit the enemies that are in front of you.
And personally i prefer the way it works now. It’s nice mix between using it to turn and ability to look around…
I’m surprised no one mentioned the free camera switch.
With this enabled, using the right mouse button to rotate the camera will result in your character moving in the direction the camera is looking when you start moving again. If you use the left mouse with the camera, you will continue to walk in the direction your character is facing, regardless of the camera.
Simply tapping either of the two buttons acts as a “switch” for each of the two modes.
