Is it me? Or is it hard to target in this game?
As for the shatterer, I believe this is a concern with most world bosses of that degree having specific target points (the red reticle things that appear on their faces and knees and the like) but I could be horribly wrong.
AS for targeting small things, my only concern is the complete inability to target anything behind your character, even pressing C (which I bound to target closest enemy) it will straight refuse to target the thing behind me. Which is annoying, as several skills are designed to push you away from your target, but if you dont have one they just fling you backwards. Meaning a skill that should enable me to escape better, forces me to turn 180 degrees, then target, then use the skill, then turn 180 degrees again and keep moving.
My whole issue with targeting is on an aoe style class, like the Necro, I constantly drop target, to either minions, or if I am dropping staff marks in a champ fight, losing target to other people, this might be because I keybind almost every ability to my mouse side buttons. Logitech G700.
Tab seems a little unreliable as well, more often than not I will tab to something further away and pull more. For the most part it is good, it really doesn’t bother me on a cleave class like warrior or guardian. But aoe classes it can be a fairly big annoyance, like you said it’s not unplayable, but frustrating.
I don’t like the targeting either. On my engineer, sometimes I have a target but my character keeps aiming at some other mob, sometimes causing me to pull more mobs by accident because it’s not attacking what I have targetted.
I miss in GW1 where I could simply click on the target to run to it and attack. At the least I wish I could single click a target to auto-attack. I also wish the mouse cursor stood out a bit more. Gotta be honest but sometimes I lose track of my cursor on my 27 inch screen and I lose a lot of time wiggling the mouse to try locating it. I wish my cursor was more visible. I wish it was bigger and brighter, or even just brighter would probably help a lot.

Half the time, I go to move my screen and only the mouse cursor moves, I find myself having to re move my mouse to cursor position on screen and then drag it back, re center my mouse and then re click and attempt to move the screen, it’s not constant, but gets old very fast.
Try Combat Mode 1.0. Brings TERA-esque combat to GW2.

Yea it looks great, I would love FPS style mouse movement in this game, but I’m not going to chance getting my act banned for using it.
I just looked up Combat Mode 1.0 & it says A-net does not disallow it – is that true?
To me targeting is the single most broken part of the game. and it all ties into other problems like pet ai and autoattck features. Making targeting and correctly attcking the right mob a pain.

Yea, if they find out you are using mods they will ban your account.
in guildwars it used to be c space spam.
But heres the thing i dont like about Gw2 say you tabbed through the targets, and found the right target you try to call it by ctrl and clicking portrait, it doesnt work. Why doesnt work?
I lose targets too often and unintentionally!

Using Combat Mode appears to be allowed:

So it looks like a response from Gaile is that they won’t say if it is either approved or bannable. Bannable if said mod gives an advantage over other players, it looks amazing and I am seriously thinking of getting this. But if you really think about it, I have a mouse that can bind 4 buttons on the side to 12, 4 regular, ALT and Shift binding, does that give me an advantage over someone who has a 2 button mouse? Technically yes, but they could never ban you for using it, well I guess yea they could if they really wanted to, but thats extremely bad for PR.
I’m glad I’m not the only one. I thought I was just being KBkitten :P
I also find that with auto attack activated when I right click on a target my char will often stand and look at it without attacking. I don’t know if that’s tied to the targeting prob or something else.
Anywho I’m still enjoying this game like mad.
Yea, I enjoy this game very much as well, even got some WoW RL friends to drop and commit to GW2, they enjoy it as well. But given that this is said to be like TERA combat, TERA has the best combat in a game hands down, and having played some of that game before, this gets me all kinds of excited.
It seems like such a small thing, really! I just want a key that let’s me go into FPS targeting mode so I don’t have to hold down the RMB. Heck, I don’t even need a crosshair (although it would be nice).
It was the first thing I looked for under the options tab when I started playing the game. Other, similar games have it (DDO leaps to mind). Anyone who games a lot should understand how this is sort of a big deal… with all of the wonderful refinements the devs bring to this game I’m really surprised this wasn’t included!
Not a deal-breaker for me… but a puzzle for sure.
Target closest appears to mean…target the closest enemy on the other side of the map.
Having a first person view would also alleviate some of my grievances with the camera, for tight space combat. So I see more than just sides of walls, the inside om my characters head and so forth.
The only reliable way of targeting in this game without a called target is by using the pointer.Pretty archaic.
I’m still scrounging to find any bits of info I can on this..sadly, lol.
@Temper Indeed.
When I’m downed and fighting for life targeting always seems unlock the target that I was fighting and has me flinging dirt at otherwise unengaged targets drawing them in and sealing my fate
Ah, yes, losing target on Downed and having to tab erratically through six targets so I can finish killing the target I had almost killed so I can rally, but dying because the targeting in this game stinks and it simply won’t go to the target I need. Good times, good times.
Targeting in this game is pretty weird.
I was testing why my “stop auto-attack on target change” option wasn’t working (I use that option to stop over-aggro, since even sheathing weapons won’t force my character to stop!)
So, right-clicking, the button you use to turn the camera, works as a targeting button.
This needs to stop. Are we supposed to turn and kite with the keyboard?! No… we’d die in an instant. So this needs to go.
Also, even though right-clicking seems to work as target, it doesn’t make you stop auto-attacking on target change (even if you have the option enabled)
I have “double click to attack” disabled (because I want to single click).
Single-left clicking a target does not attack.
But single-right click does attack.
Does this mean ANet intended for right click to be targeting button?
Then why does enabling “double click to attack” not work with right-click, but with left-click? If I have it enabled, even a single right-click will start attacking.
So….? What’s the deal here?
Doesn’t matter, right? You’re supposed to use Tab to target anyway, right? Sure, I would, I did in Guild Wars 1, but in this game the Tab targeting is really wonky.
I have 3 dummy golems (light medium heavy) in front of me to either side. I have nothing selected. I pressed tab? It targets the Dodge golem that’s alllll the way at the back. I press tab again, expecting it to at the very least, select the Light golem I expected it to target. No. Won’t change targets. Stays on the dodge golem.
What is tab assigned to in my preferences?! Next enemy!

I agree, the targeting in this game needs to be fixed. I find it quite annoying when I’m running with a group of ‘allies’ in a story mission and the enemies are all around us. I click tab on the enemy and attack them. I move the screen around by right clicking and holding to drag it, only to have it select an ally in front of me.
If right clicking is really a targeting feature, that needs to be disabled, or at least given the OPTION to disable that.
Also, I do experience frustration with being in downed state and having the target move to something else that has full health – not the mob that was about dead. So I proceed to accidentally attack the full mob, which basically screws me over.
I love the game so far, ~100 hours, but some stuff needs work.
Apparently some form of sticky targetting is forthcoming. As for Combat Mode and the like, the last thing I want to do is become dependent on mods again.

Me too, it would be nice if they just made the targeting right so people don’t have to use mods.
A couple days I logged on and was in Lion’s arch. There must have been some sort of bug but because it stopped when I rezoned, but when I first logged on I saw that I couldn’t target any friendlies with either mouse button :P Not NPCs nor players. I was so happy, “maybe they know there’s a problem with targeting and disabled targeting allies so we don’t accidentally cast spells at them all the time” :P
Too bad it went away after I zoned :S
