Hi, I’ve played GW2 on and off for about a month now and I really like the experience. I want to know is it still worthwhile to pick up the original GW series now? Or should I just play GW2 more? And if you’ve played the original trilogy, how does the backend story relate to GW2? Thanks!

It’s still playable, but with the smaller population some things are going to be much more difficult to complete than others (high-end dungeons, mostly – this might apply to some PvP modes by now as well). Fortunately none of them are required to “complete” the game.

It does have a very different combat style from GW2 though – agreed that a demo would be the best way to determine if it works for you. Since you’ll probably have to roll with AI-controlled henchmen a lot, you can expect to need to spend a lot longer figuring out how to build your party, which isn’t something that GW2 will give real preparation for.

Here’s the link for the demo. While I enjoyed GW1, I’m not sure I’d recommend it to anyone over GW2 unless they had very specific tastes I knew GW1 would cater to. You can solo a lot of the game, but you might have some trouble finding party members for some of the more difficult missions late in the game.

As for the story, the biggest connections are to Prophecies and Eye of the North, naturally, since those are the ones set on the main part of the Tyrian continent. Honestly, and I know there’s no small amount of argument people can give over this, I don’t think you’re missing much after you get out of the early part of Prophecies, once you get out of Ascalon after the Charr invasion. The story isn’t bad, but it wanders around, has some odd turns, and doesn’t do a whole lot to resolve itself. EotN has a lot more links to GW2, introducing the Norn and the Asura, but it’s nothing mind-blowingly important to enjoying GW2.

The story in Factions really has nothing to do with GW2, and, for my opinion, wasn’t much story at all. Nightfall explains a lot about Abbadon and Kormir, so it might be worth playing if you’re interested in them, but I didn’t get all the way through it before GW2 launched. It’s tempting to go back and finish it, but I prefer GW2 too much to bother.

Basically, if you’d like to see what things were like 250 years ago, it’s fascinating to see how the world has changed, but you’re not missing out on a whole lot in GW2 story-wise beyond that. If you’re interested in “Tyria as a character,” then it might be worth trying out, but everything critical to the story, GW2 explains in itself.

I started playing GW in May, and personally – I believe anyone who never has is truly missing a lot about GW2. I know I was. Nothing that is going to completely hinder your enjoyment of the game, mind you – but lots of little things all over the place. Graves, melodies, preserved iris flowers, events that will all seem random to you if you haven’t experienced them in GW.

What’s worth noting, as someone else mentioned, is that mechanics-wise GW is a very different game. You’ll be more of tactician than a warrior. You will get your own heroes to play with, choose builds with hundreds of skills available. The explorable maps will be your own unless you decided to team up with other players.

It’s an old game – so there aren’t as many people around, of course. This is especially true if you choose to start in Prophecies in my experience, as it’s the oldest, longest campaign.

Personally, I believe it’s an awesome, original game. – (And if you’re gonna download the trial, you should try a necromancer! nudges There can never be enough necromancers around.) Anyway, if you choose to stick around, feel free to drop me a pm. ^-^

…and it’s beautiful!

That depends on your time. If you want to waste it on GW1, then go for it. It’s very different than GW2 though. They are basically two different games with only lore in common.

Yes it is, more so than Guildwars 2, gives you a lot more perspective on current games.

The only con i can think of is the diminished playerbase.

Play the trial, a lot of people find it hard to get into GW1 so I wold try it before you buy it.

I played GW1 since it’s launch and I love the game. The Story is far superior to GW2’s and you will find important links throughout all three campaigns, but most especially in the expansion EoTN.

There are not many people playing anymore which can make some things a little tough/lonely, but everything is soloable, especially if you play Nightfall first and unlock the heroes.

As someone who got gw1 about 3 weeks ago all i can say is that game is a nightmare for me.
The amount of micromanagment required is through the roof. Have to change skills and stats both yours and those of your heroes almost with every map. Lvl cap of 20 yet all mobs seem to be over it. Mobs apearing out of nowhere. Mobs agroing through walls. LOADS of grind if you aim for HoM rewards. European districts pretty much dead. Extremely limited inventory. Groups with other players disbanding on map travel. No trade post. Unstable servers. And loads more… If it wasn’t for HoM would trash it after first 2 days.

Since you’ll probably have to roll with AI-controlled henchmen a lot, you can expect to need to spend a lot longer figuring out how to build your party, which isn’t something that GW2 will give real preparation for.

Actually the AI Controlled Heroes are significant improvements on the AI Controlled Henchemen, and you get the first one as a level 1-ish player in the Nightfall Campaign. So it is worthwhile to use that Campaign as your starting point if you are new to the game or don’t have any real need or desire to spend months on end in Pre-Searing to get the Legendary Defender of Ascalon Title, which ironically is a crap ton easier to get now that they installed daily quests that scale with your level in Pre-Searing. But still.

That said, I have been back into Guild Wars 1 a few times recently. And despite what is said in this forum, it is not as barren as you all seem to think it is. Kamadan is still the Jewel of Spamin way more so than GW2’s Lions Arch happens to be yet. But thats probably because of the centralized server chat system.

What one does have to keep in mind, is that a great deal of the back story of this game however has its origins in the Prophecies and Eye of the North Campaigns of Guild Wars 1. As such you kind of need to either read/watch an in-depth spoiler of the story of those two campaigns, or you need to play through them in the game itself. Otherwise you are missing a great deal of what set the stage for Guild Wars 2. Even Nightfall and Factions have some important tidbits, such as how the Goddess Kormir came to be so important in the storyline, and just who exactly the Order of Whispers happen to be.

As someone who got gw1 about 3 weeks ago all i can say is that game is a nightmare for me.

I will admit the micromanagement is a bit intimidating. But you really don’t have to adjust your or your heroes builds as much as you seem to indicate unless your goal is Map Completion of the Hard Mode Maps, which isn’t even really necessary to get the vast majority of the Hall of Monument Rewards.

I will agree the aggro rates are a bit ridiculous, at least by modern standards. But when compared to other games published back in 2005 (KOTOR II, Everquest II, Dragon Quest 8, and several others) it was actually pretty advanced.

You only really need to get 30 points of Hall of Monument Completion in order to get all of the skins. The rest of the 50 total points of Hall of Monument Completion only counts towards titles. You can get 30 points of Hall of Monument Completion by doing the following things:

Link your Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2 accounts (required to even qualify for the skins and titles)
Beat all 3 campaigns in Normal Mode and get the Protector Title Track completed
Get 1 Rare Pet
Get 8 Heroes their Legendary Armor
Get 38 Common (White) Miniatures
Get 1 Unique (Green) Miniature
Get 1 Rare (Gold) Miniature
Get 5 Prestige Armor sets, one of which must be either the Elite Luxon or the Elite Kurzick
Use 200 Zaishen Keys
Get the Fortune and/or Misfortune Titles to Rank 2 + any one other title such as the Urgoz or The Deep Title Tracks to the requisite rank to get credit in the Monument.

Do these things and you will automatically unlock all the skins in the hall of monuments. These are the suggestions provided on the official wiki itself. And with these suggestions you really don’t have to do any Hard Mode Content AT ALL WHATSOEVER!

Although that list may seem daunting and possibly extremely expensive. I assure you that it is the cheapest and most efficient method by which to obtain 30 points worth of Hall of Monument Completion within Guild Wars 1. As such it is the cheapest and easiest way to get all the skins. The only reason to even strive for the 40 and 50 point titles is if you are feeling particularly masochistic.

To add to a lot of what people are saying, there’s a lot of l2p in Gw1. It’s an awesome game when you learn the combat, and when you get enough heroes and equip them with the right builds you can pretty much play on autopilot if you want. I’m not sure what the status of the end game is, but if there’s people available to play it, it’s very challenging.

I still do deep runs, guild & ally do mqsc (luxon points) farm every day, you can join a kurzick guild to do mtsc for kurzick points, a decent amount of people still gvg but composed mostly of players that know what they’re doing (i.e. not new to game), random arenas is still fun, if you follow the zaishen quests and the weekly bonuses you will find most of the players.

It’s defo worth it if you want all the HoM unlocks, otherwise, personally, I think it would be very much like playing an old Pokemon game sort of thing.

The game just feels to me very outdated in terms of graphics and the general game engine itself. It missions and campaigns are pretty cool sometimes but not really worth playing IMO because you’ll find better stuff in a single player game, or a lot of more recent MMOs like TSW (which to me kind of feels like GW1’s spiritual successor).

So, you definitely wouldn’t regret buying it but it probably won’t blow your mind either.

Original GW was the best game of all times for me. I would play it again but now there is hardly anybody ‘on’ and some areas are very difficult to master alone, or actually impossible to progress.

So yes, original GW is PHANTASTIC (all expansions of it included) but cannot really play it any more.

Hint to producers: A revamp would be great.

Its worth the while. You will experience a game fully stuffed with references, a good story, sympathic characters, good looking armor and a landscape which was designed with much love.
Only flaws: From time to time there is a real nasty lag probably caused by the decreased server capacities. Also there are very few people playing GW1, so you either have to learn to play with heroes and henchmans or find some friends who are willing to travel back.

Its not for everyone. It’ll feel extremely rigid after playing GW2. You can’t go anywhere the devs didn’t want you to go, so you can’t walk off of ledges or jump, and using a command on a target will make your character automatically run up and attack. Trying to move away often results in elastic banding back and getting hit.

There is also a massive difference in skills, both the player’s set-up and the in-game abilities. You can go from struggling on a single trash pack with 7 henchmen, to soloing hard modes with the right set-up, despite no numeric advantage.

Instead of putting up protection for 3 seconds out of 25, you can cut received damage down to 10% of your max health as long as you can sustain it.

Instead of stunning for 2 seconds out of 60, you can stunlock.

As others have suggested, it is personal preference. I got it ages ago and got fairly into prophecies, but not hooked. Then booted up a new character in factions and was playing it more than GW2.

It will depend on whether you like micromanaging and things being a bit more difficult than GW2, and how well you cope without a jump button.

Graphically, the sacrifice depends on your current setup. The drop from a GW2 on high is pretty big, but high GW1 is prettier than low GW2 in my opinion. It isn’t as technically impressive still, but the design is better looking and environments feel more epic.

To add to what the others have said, GW1 is a very different game than GW2. A central component of the game revolves around creating a good build; a combination of skills and attributes that synergizes well with the rest of your party to overcome your enemies. If you enjoy games like M:tG that involves setting up the perfect “deck”, you’ll probably like GW1.

The lore and storyline is also excellent (if a bit clichéd at times), and if you’re a lorehound it’s worth it alone to see the backstory behind many things in GW2.

Ultimately, I’d say download the trial version, play Prophecies (Pre-Searing) and Nightfall (do the first mission and a few quests) and see what you think. If you like what you see so far, drop the cash and give it a try.

One thing I’m pleasantly surprised to hear is that apparently the population in GW1 is still decent. I haven’t been back there in over a year now, so I had no idea how the game was doing.
