Q:
Is it worth starting the game?
A:
There’s no subscription, and they’ve had two major sales recently which brought a good chunk of new players to the game. There’s also an expansion coming out soon*, which means more new players will be picking up the game. There’s no reason to not give it a go, if you want to play.
As for what you do, that depends on what you WANT to do. If you want to do pve, do pve. If you want to do some pvp, do it. If you want to do some wvw, do it. And yes, pve/wvw gear and stats do not apply to spvp; your gear is based on what you choose in the spvp lobby (and everyone has the same list to choose from).
level a 80 and wait for HOT.
RIght now the game is very boring unless you pvp and wvw alot.
Yes, it’s worth starting.
There’s plenty of content to play.

You can basically do whatever you want, it doesn’t really matter. Everything you do gives xp. If you don’t like what you’re doing, just do something else. It’s extremely flexible.
No subscription fee means you invest exactly the amount of time you want without spending any extra $$$.
If you are enjoying yourself, keep playing. If not, quit. Very simple concept.
If you want to do PvP, you can jump right in. PvE is one way to unlock skins you can use across all game modes, and it might be an easier way to pick up the basics than fighting other players, but you don’t need to level up or acquire gear for PvP.
Unless you have a serious need to collect EVERY EVENT ITEM EVER or compete for achievement point leader boards, I don’t see any reason you shouldn’t start out now if you’re still interested. I don’t PvP, so I can’t comment on how that scene is coming along, but PvE is still lively.
Goodness gracious! It is not late in the game. The game is just starting! It is not even 3 years yet.
If you only like PvP you can do just that after 15 minutes of tutorial. Ask someone to show you to the gate to the PvP lobby in case you have forgotten. You may have the crossed swords working too, if you still have your characters.
The game may be boring to Bishop. I suspect he has played a lot. For someone who has not played hundreds or thousands of hours, the rest of the game is only boring if they don’t like PvE in general.
The one bit of advice I would give here is to ignore the NPE stuff. It does go away fairly soon.
Try everything. If you don’t find anything that you enjoy then it’s better to find a different game and do the same. For me personally? I thought the personal story was pretty boring. It had its moments but they were few and far between. I really hoped we would be given more paths to choose from to flesh out our story but sadly we didn’t get that. I didn’t try crafting. Guild Wars 2’s dungeons are okay. It had a few interesting boss fights but nothing too exciting. I have yet to try fractals. I do enjoy Spvp. That’s pretty much all I do in GW2. I’m about to start doing WvW. In the end it’s all about what you enjoy doing. I quit FFXIV ARR because I was tired of grinding. I started GW2 because it wasn’t about grinding.
