Q:
Is new expansion including HoT as well???
Pretty much that, on the community address back when HoT was announced, you guys said:
“In the future, if we release further Guild Wars 2 expansions, we plan to offer all of the prior expansions, the core game, and the latest expansion for one single purchase price.”
Are you guys going to do that with the new expansion???
Thanks in advance!!

Well, this would be the ‘further expansion’; there have been no others. Thus, I would guess that the policy still stands. Still, only time will tell.
Good luck.
The reason I’m asking, that I just noticed now that I forgot to add to the Original Post, is that my friend is very much interested in buying GW2, but I think it would be nicer if he payed like 50 or 60 u$s dollars and get both expansions, than paying 30 u$s for HoT and then 50 u$s for the new expansion.

Yes, but I’m not attempting to locate the quote. GL

Better to get them playing now while hot zones have activity.

Was rumored the expansion was only going to be $20 .. but we’ll see when that time comes.

Depends if he wants to w8 for like half a year to make that big purchase. Keep in mind that hot is still the current content and even tho there is no lvl cap increase and that the zones wont lose value when the expac is out ppl will mone slowly to those area of the game more.
Of course they will make the people that have been here from day one and bought gems with real money pay full price again.
What alternative do you propose? That it be more expensive to get more players into the game? Isn’t that the sort of logic that leads to fewer new players?
I’m all in favor of ANet including something sweet for veterans; I just don’t think it has to be a reduction in price for the base expansion.

I felt they missed a trick with the last expansion, given the new class, by not automatically including a character slot for owners of the core game, so that they got something extra for paying twice (yes, they did eventually, but only to those who bought within a specific window, and only after complaints and bad PR). This time round, assuming there is no new class so a character slot may not be desirable to all, perhaps they could include a small gems bundle (equivalent to the cost of a slot), to owners of previous versions.
Of course they will make the people that have been here from day one and bought gems with real money pay full price again.
Yep, I could forgive HoT not living up to its hype or having as much content as expected and promised. But that price was a real sore spot. I lost a lot of respect for them for doing that while delivering something rushed and incomplete.
I wish pre expansion2 players can receive a unigue weapon skin(come in set and choose 1) or armor skin, unoptainable by wardrobe unlock. It is not so much of a work and i will be very happy.

Yep there HAS to be something for the vets. Not including a free character slot last time was a slap in the face. If Anet was reasonable they would come up with a decent pricing plan for all and yes Ill conceived, some one who has never had the game before should pay a onetime full price. They would be getting the core game and 2 expansions for a good price, meanwhile vets paying full price 3 times is a good business model? Not a chance. You get more bees with honey, perhaps Anet would be better served remembering that this time.

I don’t see why it would need to be unobtainable – we get it for free, new players get it at cost (whether that’s in game or real world). We’re still getting a bonus for being long term players.

The “alternative” is that some players just want things free, or as close to free as possible! Wish every company that I have bought things from would just drop me some freebies or super discounts for being a veteran user of their products or services!

maybe a free shared inv slot for every players who bought the game pre expac 2 release? Or maybe a title or w/e idk
The way I understood it any prior expansion to whatever expansion we were on would be part of the base game. Although I may have misunderstood what they meant.
It’s the new way that games are going, only requiring you to purchase the latest version. It’s ultimately the best choice for an aging game.
Vets already have had access to achievements that will never be accessible again, and any number of items that have become much more difficult to get (read: mystic forge weapons), as well as free unlocks of living story. Conversely, a new player would have to pay gems or money to unlock the past 2 seasons of living story, several zones, and also not have had the benefit of the snowball effect of so called “old money” and Daily Rewards. I’d make a strong claim that previous economic imbalances have favored older players.
As someone that started a few days after release, the best way to show appreciation to me is to maintain the game and continue to make improvements so it runs as smoothly as possible as well as listening to concerns.
Also, I’m pretty sure one did get a free character slot for HoT, if they pre-ordered and owned the core game. I never paid for my 9th slot, nor did I buy any of the deluxe editions.

That could be nice, for some reason tho royal guard outfit is obtainable by wardrobe unlock so I bet this would be too.

The leak suggested yearly expansions at half the price, but it’d likely be $30 considering HoT. With the recent AMA, they revealed that their plan is to continuously launch the living world every 2-3 months, with the expansion taking the place of an episode, though likely delayed a little longer. Seasons play out over a year, so unless they extend it, that would mean an expansion every 12-18 months.
As for bundling HoT, there’s really no reason to do so. The plan was to bundle past expansions to make it easier for new people to get started, but HoT isn’t actually required, nor is the living world. If they plan to bundle it anyways, it’d likely be more profitable to make it partially F2P instead; opening the maps for example but bundling the story and elites for gems as if it were a season.

The way I understood it any prior expansion to whatever expansion we were on would be part of the base game. Although I may have misunderstood what they meant.
You did. From what they said, the base (f2p) will remain the core (original gw2), and the paid version will always include base game, and all the expansions up to date for the same price.
So, those that are f2p will remain at the same level of content, but those that paid for the last expac will get everything up until that point.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
I wonder, once the new expansion drops does HoT become “core” and thereby allow access to the f2p accounts?
I wonder, once the new expansion drops does HoT become “core” and thereby allow access to the f2p accounts?
This is what I’m wondering too because HoT maps require more active players to get things done than most core maps. Populations already dipped when people rushed into the LS3 maps and will no doubt experience a greater dip when people rush into the next expansions map. So to keep the maps somewhat active for people they’d either have to nerf the meta events or allow F2P in to offset the population loses. Doing that however would grant F2P players the glider and gliding is a major reason for people to pay up so I’m not sure.
In most MMO’s they nerf the old content lock F2P players into the core content only and push rewards into the new area. However HoT wasn’t a normal transition so I’m not sure what they’ll do this time.
I would tell him to get it now once xpac 2 is out no one is going to do HOT anymore plus I heard xpac will be lower cost for ppl with HOT already.
Not other outfit, please.
that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”

Well, they have changed their position before.
I hope they don’t include it, and just sell each for 30 usd. Or a combo of both for 50usd.
Because to be honest I will prob spend 30 on gems when the expan comes out anyway.
My guess with the recent leaks, if true, is that the expansion will sell with a pre-purchase bonus of a special mount skin. After HoT seemed to have let a lot of people down on original release they will have to do something like this to encourage people to pre-purchase. With the likelihood no new race or profession, a free character slot won’t do it. I’m guessing the cost of expansion 2 will also be a bit lower for people that already have core+HoT as well.

Actually the intent is fundamentally different. When you give someone a gift instead of money, the use becomes fundamentally restricted to whatever you bought them; while money means “You can do whatever you want with it”
Likewise, giving a character slot would have the intent of getting people to make new characters while giving people gold wouldn’t have that same effect.
Though I’m not really sure what you’re trying to argue.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
Can’t you gift someone money?
Every year, some economist makes the news by “investigating” the value people place on ‘gifts’ versus cash. And every year, the media is “shocked, simply shocked” that people don’t value the gifts as much as cash — they estimate the monetary value of the gift to be less than the cost to the person offering the gift (on average, over 1000s of folks).
But the economist ignores the fact that there’s an important intangible that comes with a gift, which is that the gift-giver has cared enough to give some thought to what the received might want.
Speaking for myself, my favorite gifts (to receive and consequently to give) are things that the received wants, but would never spend money on — those are inherently less “valuable” in dollar (or euro) amounts and of much greater value in terms of friendship and how much they are enjoyed.
tl;dr the point isn’t that ANet is gifting us this thing or that currency. The point is that they stopped to think about veterans and tried to offer something that we might enjoy.
Character slots are a good option, because a lot of people would never buy them, but we can almost always use them for storage if nothing else.

Though I’m not really sure what you’re trying to argue.
I’m arguing that they’re not required to include anything beyond the expansion. The argument deviated into one about semantics because you’re trying to refute my example when it doesn’t really matter.
This all started when I made a comment that they just wouldn’t add a profession next time so there wouldn’t be a “need” to include a character slot.

For all players who registered the core Guild Wars 2® game prior to January 23, 2015 and who upgrade their account by prepurchasing and registering any Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns edition before Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns‘ launch, we will add one additional character slot to your Guild Wars 2 account.
Yes, they eventually added the character slot to pre-orders, but only after they got SAVAGED in the press for their miserable treatment of existing customers.
Well, we shouldn’t have the problem this time, if they know better.
Probably because we won’t get a new class? Hypothetically.
There are still uses for a character slot, somehow.
If we get complaints that “Omg I have a free character slot, and I don’t know what to do with it! How dare you?” then I owe you a mystic coin.
They could also give every player that buys the expansion 100G. You wouldn’t get any complaints from that but is it actually necessary for it to have been included? How’s a character slot any different?
Same difference between getting someone a gift, and just flat out giving them money.
It technically is the same thing, but the intent would be different.
A gift by definition isn’t essential.
Giving them money is a gift and the intent is the same. We can go on and on with the semantics of this but Anet is obligated to include anything beyond the expansion.

I could say the same to you. Except you refuted a point that I never made.
First off, of course they’re not required to include anything beyond the expansion. Heck, the new expansion could be one map and they could still call it that. I don’t think I was ever arguing they were obligated to do such a thing and one of my posts above contradict it as well.
And you also refuted a character slot suggestion on the basis of there might not be new classes. That’s a red herring, to say the least.

It was stated that a character slot was only added because of the mistreatment of veteran players. One of their complaints (not the poster’s) being that they didn’t get a slot when a new class was going to be released.
You said that they shouldn’t have a problem this time as they now know better.
I made a comment that they do and just won’t release a new class. They avoid that particular situation entirely.
You then went off on character slots having some value and how nobody would complain about getting them.
I then used said that Anet could give players 100G and they wouldn’t complain either. I then posed a question asking if it is really necessary for the extra to be included and how a character slot would be any different. Different pertaining to whether it would be necessary or not.
Things then deviated over semantics on what is or isn’t a gift as well as what the intent was. All of which didn’t matter.
I stated that they were the same and then tried to steer the discussion back to my actual argument. In hindsight, I probably should have not given a stance on whether the two were the same as that was off topic.
You pressed further on intent and how the two examples were not the same. Then stated that you didn’t know what I was trying to argue which isn’t a surprise as the discussion got deviated over semantics which I was trying to correct.
I stated what I was arguing and that arguing over the semantics didn’t matter.

When I claimed that they would know better, I meant that with past knowledge of past complaints that they would find a way to appease certain veteran players better. A character slot is just one example. The idea that they want to avoid this complaint by not making a new character thus not requiring new character slots is an insane conclusion, because it falsely assumes that adding a new class necessitates that one must have a new slot free and is the sole use of it.
And really, is that a solution to anything? Not make new classes?

Actually it does matter. You equivocated 100g for a character slot, and then made the logical leap that if 100 gold isn’t necessary therefore giving a character slot doesn’t matter either when we were arguing including free stuff as gifts to veteran players. So of course, the gift itself matters.
This aint about semantics. It’s about logic. Also adding 100g to each player does have some economic implications as well, more than adding a slot that may or may not be used.
And whether anything is necessary is not only results in a truism. That is, yes, we know technically speaking they don’t have to do anything. That doesn’t actually add anything and I’m not really sure why we’re discussing nothing. So what else is there to talk about beyond “semantics”?

Was rumored the expansion was only going to be $20 .. but we’ll see when that time comes.
Highly doubt it since it seems it will have more and bigger zones than HoT.
Still if they go above 40 bucks they are making a mistake especially since we likely wont see any new classes/races that are in most MMOs standard part of xpac.

Except of course that it wouldn’t have avoided the problem at all, because the full complain, and the source of the problem, was that, if Anet was going to give new players core game and expac, for the same price veterans would get expac only, then they should at least offer veterans some extra. Character slot was brought up mostly due to it being the “extra” in gw1 times. The new class was brought up as an argument only later.
So, Anet can offer a character slot and avoid the whole HoT affair, offer nothing (and get in the same situation they got then), or think of something else, which may or may not work. Considering the situation, going with the char slot seems a safe option to take.
Remember, remember, 15th of November

The game was F2P. All that new players got was the removal of those restrictions. Of course if veterans wanted the core game as a bonus, they could apply the code to a new account.
There were multiple complaints, price wasn’t the primary at announcement.
