Is the patch really 11k files?
Yes it’s 11,000 files, out of 200K that composes the gw2.dat file. The patch itself is around 440MB. The % done is by number of files and not overall size.

Huh… looking at the miniscule patch notes, I’m having a hard time imagining what all that file bloat was allocated towards.

I suspect a lot of it is also files that aren’t being applied right this instant and are instead assets to be used at a later date. Putting in data for future patches in a current one is fairly common, especially in MMO development.
Most likely the majority of those files replace ones that already exists and may only have minor updates.
