I recently logged onto guild wars 2 and decided to create a Charr Warrior, but when I was in the tutorial I noticed that I wasn’t unlocking weapon skills. Whenever I hovered over the skill bar for my weapon, it says I would unlock it at level 3. What is that? Is this just a bug, because if it isn’t I’m packing my bags and uninstalling GW2. I prefer the old system of unlocking weapon skills by using the weapons much more then unlocking them each time I level up. Is this seriously the new unlock system? Or is it just some bug?

Nope, new skill unlock system.

Weapon skills 2-5 unlock at Level 2, 4, 7 and 10. However all weapons you can wield unlock at the same time, no more leveling each weapon.

Welcome back. Since you were gone Anet added the September Feature Pack that was aim mostly at helping new player have an easier time getting into the game, even if I never heard one complaint about the game being hard to understand.

Anet whole view was new players are idiots and must have their hands held and be spoon fed everything in order not to force them to take in to much stuff to fast.

So now weapon skills, points of interests, vista and other stuff are now lvl lock.

Kill stuff to unlock weapons skills, most confusing thing I ever heard of. (sarcasm)

No POI and Vistas aren’t level locked, just hidden on the maps.

But them becoming visible is lvl lock meaning they are still lvl lock in a way.

Yes and so are mat nodes but you go into the city and buy some tools and can recognize them on sight you can still gather.

I don’t really want to have my hand held in a game like Guild Wars 2. You know, GW2 is supposed to be finding the way you want to fight and exploring the maps, and now Arena net is forcing new players to play the game their way instead of figuring stuff out which is what was fun in GW2. Great, well sorry to all those saying “welcome back”, I’m still going to be living in Chivalry Medieval Warfare maybe in till they change the system back.

At least they’re giving us an achievement for gathering all their spoons now. Maybe they’ll start restricting more regular gameplay features from low levels because they’re obviously too hard to understand.

Let’s say… you can’t jump until level 5? That makes about as much sense as the other restrictions in my opinion lol.

Golden shackles are still golden.

Every other MMO teaches you to follow the arrows. People expecting the traditional experience couldn’t figure out how to play the game. These people expected to be able to quest their way through the game, just like in every other MMO. With this mindset and the refusal to change, the game was just another Asian grinder, which wasn’t surprising considering the game was made by NCSoft, which is Korean.

A majority of the changes made were to further ease the transition from the traditional mindset. Hiding map elements for example is simply a tactic to get people to notice them as they’re unlocked, and especially with the help of the content direction arrow, direct them towards exploration.

The weapon skill change really doesn’t matter. You unlock the first 3 skills in about 10 minutes and all 5 in 30-60 minutes. Being able to switch weapons without having to kill another ~30 mobs to unlock all the skills is simply better, at least for anyone playing normally.

Except that, as several people have pointed out already, if you want to try out a new kind of weapon with your character, having all skills unlocked already means you have to contend with 5 new skills all at once, unlike before when you got familiar with the weapon as you unlocked your skills. Seems rather contradictory to the “we don’t want to overwhelm new players with the complexity of weapon skills” idea.

That’s actually what I’ve been saying. The old way was actually 100x better at helping new players and veteran players playing a new profession. You got use to the different play styles of weapons on different professions by slowly unlocking them rather than having them all unlock at once if you say only used one weapon to get the to level to have them all unlock.

Take swords, a warrior and ranger have two very different play styles. Coming off a warrior and starting to play a ranger if I used a short bow or long bow to get all 5 skills unlock using a sword might seem confusing since a ranger sword skills are more about evading rather than attacking head on like a warrior. Having the skills slowly unlock while killing stuff helps you get more use to the different play style.

After the 16th September fix to the NPE I don’t find it too bad now. Most things are either soft-locked (like dodging, you can dodge right from the start, but you’re told about it around level 5) or account unlocked so after your first character it’s unlocked right away.

You can ignore the content guide (arrow), even when it’s switched on. I’m glad they added an option to turn it off because it can get annoying, but even when it’s on you can still do whatever you want and it will adjust to where you are. (For example if you start a norn character and go to Queensdale it won’t keep trying to send you back to Wayfarer Foothills, it will show you things to do in Queensdale.)

I actually think that’s the best part of the NPE though because it solves one of the most common problems I saw new players having. There were so many topics on this forum from people who would start off doing their personal story, or maybe personal story and heart quests, then reach a point where they’d run out of hearts in the immediate area and were too low level for the next part of the story and they genuinely had no idea what else they could do.

The content guide (and for some things, like WvW, the level up notifications) solves that very effectively by making sure that even if you’re just blindly following directions you are pointed to everything there is to do. Most importantly if there’s an event going on nearby it will tell you to go and do it which is the thing they really need to learn.

Hopefully sooner or later they will also learn to explore on their own and won’t need it, but at least this way they have the option of hand-holding if they want it.

The weapon skill unlocks I don’t like however. I have to admit I can kind of see why they changed it, but I’m not convinced it’s better. Each system has it’s pros and cons but I think overall the old one was better because this one jumps from one extreme to the other. Unlocking the skills on your first weapon is very slow, you really don’t need 2 levels (even sped up levels) to get used to one skill, but then for all other weapons you’re starting with all 5 skills unlocked and if you want to get used to how each one works you’re on your own.

The other problem is that it gives you no incentive to try out all the weapons. I have 5 permanent characters and when I created each one I was sure I knew what their main weapons would be. On 4/5 I changed my mind because as I was unlocking the weapon skills I discovered I liked a different weapon more. If I didn’t have to unlock them I probably wouldn’t have discovered that.
