I play in Drakkar See, which by the German language community has been selected as the unofficial role-play server.
My character is Asura and me and other Asura players had a role-play meeting where we pretended to be in a bar in Rata Sum.
Suddenly there comes a Norn player and putts his character on the counter, just stands there and disturbs.
Other players sometimes like to jump around us and spam effects when we role-play.

Why is there no possibility to turn such players off, so that you do not see them anymore?
Or give us the possibility to make a screenshot and report them.

Is this game meant for role-players or is it not?
I understand that players who enjoy role-play are a minority, but why must we suffer such harassment?

You can screenshot harrassment and send to support via email as long as it is legitimate harrassment.

Unfortunately, it being the internet, maturity levels will always be very low and RP servers are not viable either due to the very low proportion of RP representatives. Beyond what I suggested above, there isn’t much scope beyond ignoring them (likely very difficult). Turning players off screen is almost certainly a technical impossibility and no something they’d commit resources to implementing a way round.

Wait. I’m a bit confused.
As a role player you are upset that people are interfering with your role play?
And as such you want to report and ban them from the game?

You can report them if certain conditions are met. Are they verbally abusing you? Are they interfering with your ability to play the game, complete content, and/or enjoy the game?

I don’t see how someone standing on the bar where your character is, is interfering. Or using effects in your proximity is interfering.
Of course if you feel like it is harrassment you can certainly report it, but unless they are doing something to hinder your play there likely isn’t much they can do.

At the very least you can just ignore them, or incorporate them into your role play. The norn standing on the bar is a drunk NPC. The players spamming effects and jumping around you is a crazy acting troupe hoping for a bit of coin. This is an MMO with lots of different type of players. It’s unreasonable to expect to be able to punish someone else for not playing in a way that you want to.

I don’t really role play much (I might talk as an Asuran would talk), but I can kind of understand OPs frustration.

On a side note, I’ll never understand players who can’t stand still for a second. They’re constantly running and jumping, and spamming effects, even in a small area, or when running somewhere, they’re constantly jumping along the way. It doesn’t hurt my gameplay in any way, shape, or form, but I always think to myself “WTF are they doing?”

There’s very little that can be done about it.

I can understand the OP’s frustration, but as the player isn’t usually doing anything wrong by standing there or jumping around and being generally annoying, there’s no reason for them to get in trouble. When they’re preventing you from completing something, being verbally abusive, etc. then that’s another matter.

While it may not be optimal for location, try using places that aren’t generally populated by players? Find taverns that are off the beaten path to stand in, or places that aren’t generally a part of player traffic, away from common story locations and repetitive dynamic events.

Otherwise the best you can really hope to do is ignore them as reporting them won’t have them removed unless they’re actually in violation of a policy.

It’s usually just something to do.

That being said, GW2 is just a game where you can do whatever you want. Even though it’s an RPG, that doesn’t mean it’s a game specifically for roleplaying. If the Norn dude was running around doing whatever or wanted an out of the way place in Rata Sum to AFK or something, why does your desire to play the game how he wants overrule his right to play the game how he wants?

If you’re looking for undisturbed RPing with a small group, I’d recommend jumping into an instance area.

I’m not an RP-er, but I can think of a few good ones that offer a variety of environments:
-Home Instances
-That bar in DR (“The Dead End”)
-Cragstead in NE Wayfarer Foothills
-Instances in Vigil Keep, Chantry of Secrets and Durmand Priory
-Other instanced areas in cities, such as Command Core and Citadel Stockade in the Black Citadel
-And of course, you can always RP whilst doing Personal Story/Living World

As for reaching your own solutions, there’s not much else you can do.
Of course, report if they are being verbally abusive.

Every bar I’ve ever seen in real life gets the occasional lout. Sometimes, folks ignore the person; sometimes the bartender ejects them. One way or another, people deal with it.

I always thought RP worked the same way: you accept what happens in front of you and respond to it…or you ignore it. One way or another, you can deal with it.

One thing you should never do (as an RPer) is break character and try to get the “lout” to move. The more you try, the longer they’ll stay — they would eventually stop if they didn’t get any attention, positive or negative.

tl;dr don’t feed the trolls.

So you don’t want people to play how they want too, but you want to be able to do it.

While I don’t care if you enjoy RPing publically, especially innocent RPing(I’ve walked into some houses/building in GW2 and uh… some things that probably should have been happening in party chat or whispers was going on). I also as a player find myself jumping around on things all the time. Running laps around cities, climbing up walls, spamming skills, and usually I don’t even pay attention to anybody around me.

At the end of the day, if somebody else unrelated to you is ruining your day in a non-destructive way then it is nobodies fault but your own. Grow a thicker skin, block and report them if they’re saying rude, offensive or mocking things, and overall just enjoy what you’re doing and let others enjoy what they are doing.

I’ve roleplayed most of my life on the internet, but never on games like GW2. I people roleplaying very annoying.. it is just spam to me every time I go into the Grove. But do I say anything or complain? Nah. I can’t do anything about it, plus it is just un-needed drama. I leave the area and move on. Sadly, unless they are actually harassing you, there isn’t much to be done. shrug Not hating on roleplayers, by the way.. just don’t see GW2 as a place for good rp. (My idea of rp is paragraphs, not one liners.) But, preference and all. Good luck and happy roleplaying. Try to have fun regardless.

I agree there’s nothing to be done about it.

On a side note I find role playing boring for this very reason. If I was role playing and this happened to me I would find it interesting if a druken norn came along and discuss him and even try to get him to interact in the role play then. Then if not create a plan to find another bar where there’s less annoying drunk Norns. I like to be creative about stuff like that. But I notice most role players seem to engage in boring chat and emotions that I don’t have the attention span for.

“meant for”? No, it’s not. It’s an immersionist system (immersion gamers). It lacks the social tools specifically for RP purposes (beyond emotes anyway). So technically it’s not “meant for” RP’ers distinctly and thus the public zones must be shared with all sorts of play styles, even if they act like little meow meow kittens that cant control their rude behaviors.

You can roleplay in any game. It’s your choice and no one can stop you. I’m not sure what you mean by is this game “meant” for it, though. Most MMOs are not made specifically with the roleplaying community in mind.

But any game can be roleplayed if that’s what you want to do, and there are always going to be people that try to harrass you or grief you. Even games that seem to give itself especially well to RP have lots of griefers.

Yeah not most (most are wow clones now) but there have been some that do make a good effort to provide an RP environment, and even GM’s and Dev’s that participated in games to foster such in-game communities.

One that really comes to mind is…was UO. Well still is, but long since got rid of their seers and volunteers that really helped the RP communities prosper. There were huge RP events there, with 1000 player RP alliances (many guilds). Player towns, elections, wars (pve and pvp), all sorts of stuff. SWG had strong RP ability, especially around RP player towns. Then EQ1 had a dedicated RP server, different rules, though they eventually changed that drawing in a lot of non-RP’ers for various reasons. Then probably king of the RP communities is secondlife, in the actual RP communities, not speaking of the weird stuff there. Some examples, there are more. A bit far away from immersion casual gaming.

You know, that’s been complained about as immersion breaking or anti-roleplaying since they came out, but from where I’m sitting that’s just a lack of imagination.

I don’t RP much, but I do have backstories for all of my characters. One of my characters is a big hulking charr, and according to his backstory he was once a drunk pretty vile mercenary. The turning point came for him when he was hired, along with several other mercenaries, to escort a rich family through hostile territory. That family had a child with a pink quaggan doll. During the job, my charr character grew close to the girl and her family, but due to his negligence and stupidity the family was massacred by the assassins he had been hired to protect them from. Now he carries that doll with him on his back as a reminder of the failure that now drives him to be better.

So I think the Quaggan backpack is perfect for roleplaying.

As someone who was a role-player before the internet was invented, No GW2 is not a role-playing game. Sure, players can force some role-playing aspects into the game but it is just a facade.

  • The megaserver precludes any server being specifically for role-playing, unofficial or otherwise.
  • Chat bubbles and /emotes are just not connotative to role playing immersion.
  • Character personality: Charisma, Ferocity and Dignity were removed from the game.in the April and September ’14 updates.
  • SAB, ’nuff said.
  • There are many more examples but you get the picture.

Now that said, the insufferable Norn you describe, offers you a prime opportunity to role-play.

I couldn’t count on both hands how many times in real life I saw some obnoxious drunk up on a bar in a boisterously pathetic attempt to get attention.

Role-playing is in its most basic form, interactive and collaborative storytelling. The Norn on the bar is playing the role of Fool, have at it.

This occasion screams of a role-playing occasion to me.

Once upon a time there were home servers where people of like mind could meet and play as they liked. This helped RPers find other RPers and allowed them to play as they liked. It also helped WvW rally new players to the gametype. Alas all of that went out the window when Anet started to suffer from low pop maps and people wondering where all the players were. Their answer to this was creating the mega-servers.

Now there is no more real server identity and WvW is at the mercy of bandwagoners and RPers have to deal with non-RPers.

Literally every time I have to go to the Grove for whatever reason, I see people RPing there. Also a handful of times in Southsun Cove. They are usually in the same guild, as it is easier to find many like-minded people there. While they RP in public, I’m sure the majority of RP happens in /party or /guild chat.

I RP with my friend who I joined the game with, but we keep it to /party, since I don’t have much desire to join an RP guild. Guilds tend to be very strict with guidelines and my friend and I slip in and out of character often. To us, we know when the other is IC or not, while others might not.

RP is telling a story. There is a lot of enjoyment to it.

Trolling is trolling and RPers get trolled more than anyone else in every game. You have to learn to ignore them.

I also don’t think people don’t know you’re RPing. They’re there to troll and they’d troll even if it was an RP server.

Drakkar Lake was just an “inofficial” RP-Server before we even had the megaservers.

So there never were any servers that were official flaged as RP-Servers, like for example
in Lotro.

And the megaserver of course also destroyed all forms of servers outside of WvW.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Being the voice of reason here, as Roleplay is not something I really understand. I imagine it to be like kids playing with toys, just virtually.

Irrespective, there is one very simple solution to your problem. Go to a private Instance with your team.

There are Home Instances, the Eye of the North, Personal Story Instances, Living Story Instance and Dungeons. Which makes up for a lot of area’s where you will get zero interruption from other players.

Hope that helps

You are basically suggesting that players who are playing the game in a way that they enjoy, and do not harm other players should be confined to one space. This is not right on any level.

Well you got 2 choices then. You can either go with my suggestion which gives you the option of 5 Home Instances plus Eye of the North and 8 Dungeons. Along with the possible story instances equally anything between 1-100. (so no not confined to ONE area at all, don’t over exaggerate).

Or your other option is to carry on as you are and see that you are the one with the problem of “troublesome players” but refuse to take the steps you need to avoid it.

End of the day that’s your call. I’m just trying to give you solutions, if they are not acceptable to you then i’m afraid it a case of “put up and shut up!” May seem harsh but if you’re not willing to, why should anyone else be?

Sadly you’re the one being unreasonable now!

I’d just like to respectfully give you some incite. People who RP consider it less “kids playing with toys” and more interactive storytelling. It’s like being an actor to stories you get to weave and make with other people. If those two things are the same to you then, ah, well.

Part of RPing a character means they have a personality and backstory. Some people get enjoyment out of just sitting around towns and talking about daily things, for which instances ARE good for… If the story lends itself to it. You can’t get away with the same things RPing in the home instance in Divinity Reach if your character has reason to be elsewhere in the city (God shrines, Queen’s Garden, etc.)

Other RPers aren’t satisfied with sitting around and want to RP on the field, between fighting monsters or world bosses. Instances aren’t available for that, either.

It’s a shame RPers are met with hostility (either people being nasty or intentionally trolly) and I think part of the problem is that /me (the command I see most RPers use) has a VERY wide reach. This can make maps spammy (especially multitier maps like Rata Sum/The Grove and annoy others. It’d be nice if they could limit it to a range like /say, instead.

What you are suggesting is that the roleplayers who may for example, roleplaying Ministers, to go somewhere other than where lore-wise Ministers would do their duties.

What you are suggesting is that roleplayers should be the ones to change the way they play the game, when it’s anti-Roleplay trolls that need to change their behaviours.

Roleplayers have as much right as non-roleplayers to use /say chat and /emotes as long as (just like non-Roleplayers) they are not using it to maliciously cause hurt or upset in accordance with ArenaNet’s ToS. Which at least as far as Piken Square roleplayers are concerned, it rarely if at all happens.

No, What I’m saying is, well actually exactly what you just said “All players have as much right as each other”. I’m afraid you cannot stop anyone from trolling your Role-Play.

Let’s put it into context shall we. If you were sitting in a park with a bunch of your friends and then some guys come along who are playing football and you don’t like it cuz the ball keeps coming over to you. You simply have 2 choices. Either stay there and put up with it, or go elsewhere.

Meaning, they have as much right to be there as you do. I doubt very much the police would arrest these individuals for disturbing you. Which is pretty much what the OP is suggesting.

I’m sorry but if you want to guarantee that your role play will not be interrupted then you will simply have to go somewhere where you CANNOT be interrupted. Otherwise there will always be a chance that someone will come along and spoil your fun.

I gave up on doing daily dynamic events because I found that 9/10 times players would complete the event before I had a chance to get there… You don’t see me trying to report them for messing up my plans… It happens and everyone has equal right to do whatever they want in the game and the game was raised on “Play how you want to play”.

Believe me, I know how you feel. I have a YouTube channel called “Game Slob” and quite a few times Myself and Nathrezz have had players jumping around and causing an issue so we cannot start filming, to the point where were have moved away and they follow us. We have even been forced to go to another waypoint away from them just so we can start filming. As much as i’d like to get rid of them, it’s just something you have to put up with… if you are not willing to move and work around those players then you only have yourself to blame.

Yes it can be irritating, but I’m sorry, it’s something we just have to deal with.

well, it sure beats telling everyone else to scram, like OP would like to.

Your best bet is make sure that you are only RPing in party or guild chat (if in an RP guild) and keep it out of map and talk chat.

After that, you just have to roll with people doing dumb stuff around you or find some places with fewer people acting the fool.

Wow, such intolerance…I shouldn’t be surprised though.

well, it sure beats telling everyone else to scram, like OP would like to.

The OP didn’t ask for a way to force people to leave, he asked for a way to turn off their fx so he can’t see them. But so many posters will jump on the bandwagon to throw their 2cents of why someone is wrong rather than looking at it from their perspective.

Going to specific instances is the only way to 100% solve the problem but you can’t expect people to always confine themselves to instances because RP doesn’t work that way. It’s not always “I feel like RPing, I’ll just go to a bar”, it’s sometimes “We’re RPing and we ended up being tasked with going some place to do something”. You don’t just stop RPing, go to that place, do that thing, then go back to an instance and re-start RPing. It’s a constant thing that might have various stops along the way. Unless you can create instanced parts of the maps at your command, I don’t think that is a cure-all solution.

That said, people saying incorporate harassment into your RP can only go so far. Just like everyone else, RPers are people too. They can only take so much annoyance before they just don’t want to deal with it anymore. Just like dealing with an idiot in a dungeon group that doesn’t want to follow the team, you have the kick option. The OP is asking for tools to help quell issues like that and I honestly think it’d be very helpful for the game. An option to just turn a players’ fx would be a step in the right direction and could be useful for other situations besides the OP.

I understand that players who enjoy role-play are a minority, but why must we suffer such harassment?

one: this is not a roleplaying game, and i no way encourages role play. You are welcome to do whatever you want, though.

two: if someone is harrasing you, report him.
