Is this game..dead?
The game is alive. Everyone is just in fractals.
GW2 pre Nov 15th is NOT the same as GW2 post Nov 15th. It went from an open world focused game to an instanced gear grinder. The population doesn’t seem to have changed much, but the focus of where those players are at certainly has.
Head to Lions Arch. You’ll find your missing brethren there.
Selling 30 000 units a week, not tracking digit is a significant amount. Mist of Pandaria, the most successful WoW expansion is selling less, successful live MMOs normally stabilize at selling 2 000 a week or less and are still alive and well. Growth of 30 000 people a week is a significant amount. I don’t think that you realize that.
Do you have any idea how many players are quitting per week?
Yeah.
mitra you didnt jus bring forth the argument that a game released in less than 8 months ago has more sales per week than a game released 6 or so years ago..
you realise how wrong your statment is ? its like comparing the wiis current sales per week to the 3dss which one is obviously going to hqv more sales per week due to it being newer to the market?
off the media create the wii is selling about 1k a week while the 3ds is selling 50k to 70k on average weekly …… in japan only common sense is needed to understand why the wii is selling less per week….same logic can be apllied here
I think the OP is more dead than the game.
All of you replying to a troll who can check in his book “mission accomplished”, by stirring everyone up and getting 148 posts at this point with only one simple comment about the game.
Where’s his response? go ahead, look for it.
they sold 2 million copies in the first 2 weeks. The real copies sold number is between 6 and 11 million. I don’t see that massive people shed and I haven’t met a single person that has quit GW2 besides those that come to complain on the forums.
This is outright false.
http://www.vgchartz.com/game/37350/guild-wars-2/
Even if we assume that every single one of the 2 million copies sold in the first two weeks is a digital copy and thus not counted among the above figures (which we know isn’t true), that still only totals to under 4 million copies sold.
And given that many of the copies in that 2 million overlap with the retail sales in the link above, it would be far more accurate to predict a conservative 3 million or so copies sold. Nowhere NEAR 6 to 11 million copies of GW2 have left the shelves.
We just sold out of copys AGAIN at my store.
And not to mention in November the game had the most digatel sell on green man gameing beeting out both AC3 and farcry. Than in December amazone had a sell and it was one of the top 5 sold products
So 6 to 11 mill may be an exaggeration the game is still selling really well (i in fact have two friends who just upgraded there PCs and will be picking it up in the next week or so (after payday))
I’m on HOD n I was just playing wvw n this game is not dead…
this game is not dead.
go on blacktide EU and see what i mean. i see more people running around then in WOW.
Lol kinda funny they say this game is dead.
sometimes there like around 10 people at one event..
The game IS dying, can’t argue that, and you can’t just source one server and say the game is fine lol. Play outside your server and you will see what the OP is talking about.
And the only way your seeing more people on GW2 is if you were to compare a low pop wow server to a high pop Gw2 server, several million more people play wow lol….
GW2 wont die, but it dropped a major chunk becouse of lack of content and character/gear progression. Then another big chunk of the casual players still playing when they added fractals.
GW2 will have a playerbase around GW1 size, differance is a mammoth like GW2 requires alot more resources to keep up then GW1
Exactly, in GW1 we have the resources to entertain ourselves. But in GW2 with the lack of variety in builds ANet is going to have to keep adding massive amounts of content JUST to keep people interested.
It’s a really bad design because people will be expecting a ton or simply get bored like many already have.
several million more people play wow lol….
In China maybe
But it’s clear in the western world players said “No” to Pandas and are now playing GW2.
Ignore the trolls, the game is far from dead. Our guild had over 100 players online at the same time yesterday for the first time ever, and we are an Oceanic guild.

WoW is still thriving in the west, I still play as well and disagree’d with panda. Just ignore them and continue playing my human.. not hard. Just how I ignore the worgen, Blizz adds horrible races to their game but it’s still a great MMO. I still expect them to add faries and vampires… lul

Their ocean of dead servers says otherwise
My old server was called Medium in Cata was really a Low and they are now calling it High and it has half the guilds raiding as it did in Cata, LOL.
From the number of wowkids trying to recruit players from the GW2 forums it’s pretty clear where the players are these days.

Because posting in a forum indicates I am not playing…. well I’m not sure what to say what with your infallible logic and all.
Anyway, their servers aren’t dead. Cata was horrible, MoP is much better and subs are back up, this is literally a fact. My guild also died down in Cata, but I haven’t had so much fun raiding since Wotlk in MoP.
At least in WoW there are things to do and I get rewarded for doing them. Oh BURN and I haven’t seen anyone try recruiting, just making comparisons with a dying MMO and a thriving one. Don’t get mad bro…
Even Cata is 10x better than current GW2.

They’ve got a handful of busy servers, the rest are clearly dead and/or dying.
You cannot deny that! Everyone knows it, it’s the laughingstock of the gaming world.

Well now you’re just trolling with false information, shoulda seen it from the start. Happy trails, my good sir
GW2’s biggest flaw was not introducing Ascended gear at release, and then (after that first mistake) introducing it at all later. If anything results in its death, it would be that.
Not introducing it at release left the grinders wondering “What next?”. Release to November 15th was a long time for hardcore content consumers and ex-WoW players, and eventually a large portion went on their way after saying “This game has no gear progression. I’m gone”.
Once they were gone, you were left with Guild Wars 1 players who came looking to its sequel to live on its legacy of uniqueness. But then suddenly Arenanet busts out with the November 15th patch and slaps all of those players in the face with a gear grind more becoming of World of Warcraft than its actual predecessor. This would be all well and good for the grinders… if many of them hadn’t already jumped ship.
So the grinders jump ship earlier and return to WoW. The GW1 players jump ship later and return to GW1 / whatever is left for those of us who don’t like WoW clones. What groups are left?
In the end, it all boils down to ascended gear. It should have been introduced at launch, mentioned at launch, or not introduced at all. Keeping it a secret until November and then launching it let a lot of folks down while missing the chance to capture a large portion of the core group it was aimed at.
If they wanted to appeal to the WoW crowd instead of the Guild Wars 1 crowd, then they should have stopped those players from returning to WoW first.

Ignore the trolls and look at the facts. www.xfire.com . Guild Wars 2 is in the top 5 played games and is extremely popular.
The game has grown significantly since Christmas.

was wii the best selling console in the world? WoW is the best selling MMO in the world and their panda incident is the most popular expansion to this day. Therefore, yes I’ll compare their numbers. And guess what? If an MMO can outsell their most popular expansion weekly it’s a good sign!
several million more people play wow lol….

But it’s clear in the western world players said “No” to Pandas and are now playing GW2.
Not quite.
As an aside, an inside source tells me Blizzard will soon announce WoW is back up to 11 million paying subscribers around the world. Where as Guild Wars 2 hasn’t announced any sales milestones since the first one. Peculiar, no?
you know what a dead game is right?
or a dying game.
look at Battllefield 3 / Diablo 3.
For an MMO – GW2 fits the definition of a dying game.
Saw it with Warhammer. Saw it with Age of Conan. Saw it with Star Wars: The Old Republic. The same patterns. And here players don’t even have to pay to play.
I don’t think you even know what the definition of a dying game is.. My server is live and well and in the lead for wvw.. There are always a crap load of people for the dragon events and a lot in Queensdale doing the events there. This game isn’t dying.
Every time a DE starts there are 5-10 people popping out of nowhere , scaring the kitten out of me and once the event is over, even if I just blink for a second they’re gone! And I’m not talking about Queensdale, I’m talking about zones like Harathi Hinterlands, Blazeridge Steppes etc..
Let’s compare it to WoW:
tumbleweed
oh a player from the other faction on the horizon, hope he doesn’t gank me
more tumbleweed
yeah, GW2 is dead for sure…
The game is not dead, or dying, and I wish y’all would knock this crud off. If you don’t like the game, then don’t play. If you do, then play. If you have gripes, then make them. But enough with the dying and the WoW comparisons, it’s pointless and mean-spirited.

lol. my sides.
I am New player and don’t really know much what you guys are talking about but…. I have a level 28 Warrior and I have seen plenty of people in the game world. Had no trouble finding grps for Grp Events etc.
Also went to the Mists to find nearly all the Games full for SPvP so I guess all this hate is probs kitten people because of their dreams for this game and didn’t span out for them.
I was on Desolation but moved to Gandara to join a Guild which is I am loving to be a part of.
Both Worlds I had no problems at all and thats at lower level.
On the WoW point of View of this. Yeah I do notice it’s more crowded than GW2 but there is a far bigger player base and also a PC or Laptop 8 Years old can play that game. Lots of people in the World Can’t afford a Decent Current machine to Run such a Game as GW2
I have to guildies from WoW really wanting to play this game but can’t afford a computer that can run the game. But they can play WoW no problem. Thats a market Blizz defo aimed for
(edited by Wobbles.6408)
By half of the definitions from the people who say the game is dying, all MMOs are dying. You will always have people come and go in MMOs. It’s the nature of the beast. Powergamers will grind through content faster than a fat kid can scarf down a twinkie and then get bored and go play something else. casuals will be casuals and log in here and there as they see fit and do their thing.
Thing is this game doesn’t have a monthly fee so people can in essence run 2-3 other MMOs with fees and bounce between as they get bored, which is what i used to do but paying $45 bucks a month and really only focusing on 1 MMO primarily seemed like a waste so i quit and just play this.
I don’t see this game dying. It’s just settling down and stabilizing on the population which will be a decrease as in pretty much any MMO except WoW which was a fluke in the MMO world anyways with how well they did for so long with the exception of EQ1.
Am I legendary yet!?
I don’t understand why you would stick around and troll the forums if you don’t like the game. There must be something seriously wrong with you, I wish ArenaNet would just ban all the trolls around here.
If you have something constructive to say here then good if not provide facts like I have, otherwise its nothing but hating.
it is a fact that the game is dying… like everyone. As soon as you are born you are dying.
What matters is when you will be death, and i think for gw2 this “when” is pretty far from now.
why do people knock wow when gw2 end game is identical with people in one main city spamming lfg?
Actually now that prime time is in full swing, it’s obvious the game is growing. Everything is zerged and there’s overflow/queues.
Not only have there not been server merges, but server capacity has actually been increased since launch
ArenaNet is not only not firing, they are still hiring even more staff. And the only thing they’re hiring them for is GW2.
This game is already huge, and is on the way up.
Its quite known your one of the biggest fanboys on the forum and refuse to take of the blindfold.
The playerbase has dropped loads, well over 50%. Theres a huge amount of guilds that has disbanded becouse of lack of players.
My own guild went from 100 players to 2, they soon realized the flaws of the game.
The status on the server is not how many players are currently playing, i dont know how they count it, but its not, many of the so called “high” servers are abandoned.
Theres also one type of servers we dont see in the server list, the “overflow servers”
How many of those are still active? At start you could get into 5-6 different overflow servers, now you get into the same one if you get into any.
Lets say you have 100 normal servers and 300 overflow servers, how many of those 300 are beeing used now? i dont think theres to many.
Guild Wars 2 wont die, but its nowhere near increasing in population. I would say it will settle around GW1 population. And the fanboys will get a shock when they start merging their first servers.
why do people knock wow when gw2 end game is identical with people in one main city spamming lfg?
I dont play WoW but its easy to understand why its more popular. It has more sttuff to do and dont count exploring 100% of the map, picking flowers and playing dress up doll as endgame. Plus that what you do is actually rewarding.
(edited by Selo.1250)
I am trying to understand the mentality behind insulting people who like a game, or support the features it was released with, as ‘fanboys’. If you don’t like the game, then register your complaints and go play a game you like.
You’d think there was something wrong with buying a game and liking it.
Also, buying a game’s vanilla launch and then complaining that WoW has a lot more to do is pretty silly. WoW’s had far, far more money and time to invest in its game, which at launch was also pretty bare and a lot more rough around the edges.

Out of my 399 person guild, only 21 players are showing as Unknown location (this means they haven’t logged in since the last patch).
Sorry your guild died but it no way represents the health of the game.
As fast as they lift the caps on the servers they fill up again. The game is busting at the seams, it’s a phenom!

Wow, show me, busting at the seams, I must be playing a different game then.
Where do all you guys get your information from.
Karizee is the second biggest fanboy after xiv, so the blindfold is strong in this one
it sure feels dead.
I’ve been on the Henge of Denravi server from day 1. As many people know, there was a mass exodus from our server to other servers due to big wvw alliances moing to other servers and the band-wagoners following. Recently, though, I’ve seen a lot of leveling players around without guild tags (not bots either). And at the tail end of the winters day event, I got into overflow in LA and a queue in wvw for the first time since the big guilds transferred servers. I say that if HoD is growing, so is the population as a whole.

these photos are from yesterday.
So many ppl at a single event in mid of game.
PVE MAP lvl 35-40

Cool. Your server has some people on. Not that many in a zone like that though. I can do screen shots of ToR and WoW and even Aion and it has a lot more people in a similar type zone.
If I cared about the game I could have done screen shots on the GW2 server I’m on and you would have seen 1 person.

You don’t even know what endgame is, endgame is what you do after you’ve levelled and geared. The problem with WoW is that most people don’t see most of the endgame and instead spend their subscription time grinding, trying to make money and levelling their gathering skills.
You don’t even play WoW and I still DO, I have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours grinding for PvP gear in the past only to see the gear gap increase still further between the new and old players. Botting has become extremely prevalent, even in PvE dungeons and the gear ladder is ridiculously tedious.
Have you ever thought that maybe doing Arah and Fractals counts as endgame content? Have you ever thought that maybe getting that different exotic skin isn’t so different to getting the new tier in WoW?
Your argument rings as hollow as your experience in WoW. If you don’t play it, don’t make claims about it.
You claim that there’s more to do, yet you don’t say kitten about what you can do.
WoW: Dungeons, raids, battlegrounds, world pvp (no-one does this anymore anyway), gathering, crafting, exploring, gear ladder, mini-games, seasonal events
GW2: Dungeons, fractals, WvW, sPvP, crafting, gathering, exploring, armour skinning, world events, dragons, mini-games
Tl;dr version: From some-one that played WoW, GW2 has just as much to do, you just don’t have a clue.
Because 3 months of doomsaying isn’t enough.
Keep on trolling bojangles, why you spend so much time on the forums is anyone’s guess.

No doubt he hopes he’ll get paid to shut up already, seriously… we’ve had months of this “GW2 is bad, it’s dying” nonsense from the same people, it’s about time they learn that nobody is believing their press.

Okay Mr. Troll, take those screenshots please, no cross-realm (because wouldn’t that be cheating? lol), no starter zones. All mid-level zones, at random times on high servers.
I’ll challenge you to find many more people, go on then. I find it funny though that you think this is such a big deal that you have to complain about population though. Surely to you, the population of GW2 doesn’t matter Mr. I-don’t-play-GW2
(edited by Mirta.5029)
Actually, I feel like I saw an influx of players for two weeks or so – at least the low level areas are quite well populated again in Gandara. Seems to me some people got GW2 for christmas

Endgame is what you do at lvl 80, beeing geared is not endgame. Raiding, PvPing is endgame. Achievements, 100% map is something you do on the side, its not endgame.
Reason why i said WoW is becouse its apperantly the one game most play, and theres many similiar to it.
Ive most likely played more mmos and raided more then you, not that its something to brag about.
There are ways to solve the skillcap between new instance tiers, lotro has done so for example.
It doesnt matter how manh instances in GW2 they add, their all meaningless, you just get a new skin, and thats it. I can see that some like it, but the big part of the mmo community dont. Getting a new tier of gear > making your stronger (character progression) > need to make stronger monsters, evolving the world. Getting a new skin in GW2 > i have 20 sets with exactly the same stats, it just makes me look uglier/prettier. No stronger monsters, stale world.
Mirta, you spent hundred of hours on pvp gear ? it can be obtainable in 2 days, and for arena, it really doesn’t take hundreds of hours to cap points lol. And yes, most of people can see end-game with LFR addition. World pvp is alive now more than ever because of cross-realm zones. I play on Kazzak(high) and Alliance attacks us with 2 full raids of like what.. 80 people? Also, I want to see anyone playing in Pandaria with 8 years old laptop on Ultra, good luck.

You know we all think the same about you two…. lul
Fanboyism is a hard disease to get rid of. I used to have it too until I realized how horrible GW2 is, and how it literally has nothing that was in GW1.
I ‘quit’ WoW (obviously playing again) at the time and thought this game was the future blah blah, seriously how can you defend this game though.
It REMOVED trading, it’s literally going backwards not forwards. It removed trinity, any sense of team work or strategy. It removed interesting combat, we are stuck with the same boring 5bar of skills, ranged is totally favored over melee 100% of the time.
We can’t even move skills on our bar for crying out loud. It’s like they forgot to uncheck stickittenys (rly, sticky and keys is censored? fail forums too) and thought F it, they’ll LOOOVE the choices they have, teehee! /troll
Kiting is the name of the game because oh god forbid I take ONE hit from a mob and shatter, oh but wait we have this invincibility button called dodge. C’mon, does it get ANY lazier than this?
Minecraft has more interesting combat. I just honestly can’t see how one could fanboy GW2, it’s like you MUST be trolling. That’s all I can fathom right now.

OP’s question was already answered several times: No, the game is not dead.
I just sighed such a deep sigh that I think a little part of me faded away.
Now I have to eat a lot of ice cream in order to fill that gap.
