So, 8 of my 9 characters just had their first birthday. Why? Because I was so excited for Guild Wars 2 and to play every profession after the beta.

Why were they all made on release night? Because 1) I wanted to grab their names that I came up with and 2) because I knew Anet from Guild Wars 1 rewarded characters with a birthday present for their characters every year.

For those of you who never played GW1, the birthday present could be opened to reveal one of several minipets of different rarity. The minipets were tradeable, so if you didn’t get the one you like, you could sell it, or simply keep it and buy one from another player who doesn’t want theirs or maybe got a duplicate from a second character. It was never a HUGE deal, but it was nice to earn a unique reward for being a loyal player each year.

So now why am I disappointed? Yes, I did get my birthday present….The same one 8 (soon to be 9) times!

I am disappointed because this minipet is…

A) Mini Queen Jennah, which until this part in the living story (that I didn’t even bother to do because GW2 has been boring me lately, but that’s a whole different story) was never really involved to much with the game. Why couldn’t I see maybe a mini Zhitan, or something cool that actually had to do with the something more epic in Guild Wars 2.

B) Everyone gets this minipet! Mini Queen Jennah is not unique, not tradeable, and not interesting. What in the heck am I supposed to do with 9 account-bound Mini Queen Jennahs? I don’t even like using minipets in this game because every time I click “Deposit all collectables” my minipets disappear as well! Why can’t I at least right click on my minipet to select it to not auto-deposit with my crafting materials?

C) Not only does everyone get this minipet, everyone gets this minipet several times, depending on how many characters you’ve created and when. Why would I want the same minipet 9 times? Can’t I at least have a chance for something different? With Anet’s RNG-obsessed nature, it figures they leave it out when it could be used for something interesting.

I’ve been very disappointed with Guild Wars 2 lately, and this was just another slap in the face to myself, who I’d consider a hardcore, loyal Guild Wars fan.

Considering I tried looking up another thread about this and was unable to find one because the search on the forums was not working properly, I felt like I should just make my own.

It is not that I feel entitled enough to complain about a free item, it is the fact that Anet cared considerably more for their players in Guild Wars 1 than in Guild Wars 2, and this is another point that proved it. I am disappointed because they took a large step back, and I feel like Anet is saying “Here’s a mini 9-times for playing for a year, now give us more money” vs. “Thank you for playing and being loyal with us. We appreciate that you chose our game, and we worked hard to give you something we thought you’d enjoy”

Like I said, minipets aren’t that big of a deal to me, but it really is the thought and the message behind it that shows how much Anet has changed as a company

You’re late to the cry party. Already had a couple of long [merged] threads, one of which was deleted without warning. Everyone has cried, complained and given up.

Enjoy your 9 Jennahs. I got 3 duplicates, lol. So eventually I’ll have 12. One guy who reportedly has about 40 plus alts will have enough to satisfy any mini Jennah craving.

I apologize if there have been other posts about this. I assumed there were and I did try to find them, but the search tool was not working for me. I’m not sure if it’s due to my internet (because it isn’t great) or if there was an error on the webpage’s part, but anything I typed in would not search.

Yes, I know, the search function is borked. I wasn’t really commenting on that as much as the outcry has died down. People have given up on this topic. Too many bad decisions by ANet to keep a topic on one going for long.

Actually, any items you put into a lockbox won’t be deposited when you hit “Deposit collectables”. So get an invisible bag, or a safe box, or whatever it is, and keep it in there. Bam.

Right, but my inventory is full of 20 slot bags. If I were to try to buy a 20-slot invisible bag, it would cost a lot more for what…keeping a minipet in my inventory? No thanks.

My parents have both died. My dad died a painless but slow death. My mom was found lying on the bathroom floor on Christmas Eve.

Bad things happen everywhere to everyone at some time. That doesn’t mean that people can’t complain about the small things and want sympathy or it to be changed.

But… anyone who doesn’t just bend over and take it is someone who thinks they’re entitled to better. Entitled! Do you have any idea how despicable they are? Forget definitions, they think they’re Entitled to improvements!

There’s a difference between feeling entitled and disappointed. I am disappointed because in GW1, their small but thoughtful birthday gift was actually unique and tradeable, which made me feel appreciated as a customer for being loyal. It is part of the reason I respected ANet so much as a company. Now this, among many other things over the past year, have shown that they care a lot less about their customers and more about getting their money. It is disappointing to me.

Actually I sort of like the buff scrolls. They’re more use to me than a mini. They last a day each. I have a lot of alts. I even got some duplicates I wasnt’ entitled too.

Basically I can buff my magic find for a couple of weeks.

The mini situation, however, definitely sucks.

The buffs are nice. The scrolls, I am holding on to mine and hoping for new professions or races. I can use them then. The mini Jennahs? They messed up here. What they could have done was make that a gift for your account turning a year old and everyone gets just one. I feel that would have been better than receiving multiples of them. Getting multiples of the same mini, it just makes the gift feel cheap. Especially since so many were expecting the gw1 version of birthday gifts.

This is exactly how I feel.

Sure, I like the buffs, but I do already have plenty stored in my bank. As far as the scrolls….not too much use since I have 9 level 80s, but like you said, I’m saving for (hopefully) new professions. But mostly what I’m talking about in this post is my disappointment in the lack of variety with the minis. Like you said, it makes the gift feel cheap because everyone gets the same mini (multiple times if they have more than 1 character) and they can’t even be traded.

Hmm. So this item is available without spending any money ? I am pretty sure that only people who have spent money on GW2 get the minipet. When there is a threshold of, “must spend at least X amount of money,” to get something it is by definition not free.

That’s the point, I think. Everyone who is playing the game has purchased the game. Its not as if we sign up using their free-to-play option and then complain about a mini given to us. Everything you get in GW2, whether you like it or dislike it, requires a purchase.

That’s like saying a free gift for a large order isn’t free because you had to ppay for the order.

Or even Buy-One-Get-One deals. If an item is $20, and goes on a BOGO sale, does that mean you paid $10 for each of two items? Or does it mean you bought an item for $20, an then got a second one for free?

In actuality, you are paying for the things you ordered, and get something extra for free. (Whether you like it is up to you.)

We bought the game. When we bought this game, we were not buying our first birthday presents. We were buying a game. We were buying the chance to explore and save Tyria. Everything added post-release that is NOT a bugfix or balance fix is free. (Except Store items, obviously.)

The minipet is free. It is a free gift given to people who bought a game a year ago, but it is still free.

If it’s not free – tell me how much it cost. If you say “$60” (or your currency’s equivalent), then you bought a minipet that took a year to deliver and got a free game.

If it is free then it can be gained without any expenditure of currency. Can one have one of these minipets without giving Anet/NCsoft money ?

As to the, “we were not buying our first birthday presents,” part…are you sure about that ? Have you seen the posts by people who made a point of filling all of their character slots on day one, even buying extra slots, specifically for their first birthday presents ?

When you bought this game you bought everything that was and will be included in it that cannot be accessed without that purchase.

Personally I do not particularly care about the BD presents. I thought the GW1 approach was better, but I don’t actually use the minis much in either game. I do however want to point out the fallacy in a claim that X is free if you cannot have it without giving the company money.

Very very rarely is something free. The way I see it, if I use a BOGO, I get half off for each, because I’m getting them both. I’m spending the $20 for two items. If it were free, it wouldn’t require any money input. If I have to pay money, it isn’t free. Since I had to pay money for the game, it isn’t free. If it were truly free, all of my friends who don’t have GW2 would technically be able to get a minipet too.

I totally agree with this comment….I specifically made sure that I created one of each profession on day one, specifically thinking that “I know Anet does awesome birthday presents for GW1, so I can’t wait to get all of mine (x8) a year from now”, and to me this birthday gift is pretty much a slap in the face to loyal GW1 fans.

The intent, which of course nobody cares about such details, is to give everyone something, regardless if they have one character or 20. One can play the same amount of time and have different amounts of characters. Neither method is superior to the last, so yes, receiving the same one is fine because you don’t deserve more than other people.

Of course, let’s just ignore the birthday booster and focus on the mini. I really worry for some of you, because other things in this game, other games, and pretty much anything else is much, much harder.

A lot of the disappointment comes from the fact that in GW1, birthdays were universally considered awesome. Because this game keeps the “Guild Wars” name, many expected the same treatment on birthdays as well. But instead of awesome, people got Queen Jennah. Too many leftover Queen Jennahs in the mini factory, I guess.

I feel like what you are saying is that people that spend more shouldn’t get more. Which is odd, to say the least.

Why is it odd again? Are you more important because you spend more?

You do realize one can spend a lot on a few characters.

If I buy 2 cars and someone else buys 1 car, should we both only get 1 car?

What did you pay for the mini again? Oh wait 0.

Since we all had to pay for the game, I’m pretty sure we did pay something for it.

Don’t you think you’re being a bit unfair here?

You’re measuring working hard and contribution solely by the amount of characters made. You do realize there’s many ways to spend gems besides character slots right? Why exactly should sheer amount of characters be the only measurement?

If they really did give a different mini for each character, then wouldn’t other people complain that they got a lesser gift for making less characters even if they have played just as much and spent just as much as gems on other stuff?

My point is that you really can’t measure these things objectively. Except maybe in terms of time… But no matter what you see, you will leave someone out. So why not just give everyone the same reward?

So yes, I just think people are expecting they deserve more.

You did not. So you bought a new slot expecting a mini at that time? Assuming we’re playing the same game, or the in-game information is inaccurate.

By all I have read, everything done in GW1 was bad. Even the devs here have said as much when asked why we can’t have something like it was in GW1. You’ll get 1 of 2 responses here from players, they boil down to the same thing, play or go away. I agree duplicate b-day gifts is kinda odd. It shows no imagination or planning. GW1 is completely different from GW2 and it always will be. They share a name, that is all. GW1 was/is a complete world, GW2 is a theme park. Get used to it, it’s WAI.

If that is the case, why is there still Wintersday? Halloween events? Or even birthday gifts in the first place? The fact is, they carried over a lot of traditions from GW1 to GW2, birthday gifts being one of them, but this time it was a major disappointment for loyal and hardcore fans.

I am a proud, loyal, GW1 fan, having over 7000 hours invested, and my view isn’t really different. We were not even absolutely sure we would receive birthday gifts, or if we would be remunerated in some other way, or not at all. I suppose, when people’s expectations are not met, there is a feeling of disappointment. I expected nothing, and was pleasantly surprised at receiving 3 gifts (or more) per character. =)

Holy crap. The spirit of a gift is more important than the actual gift itself?

No, but as a Guild Wars 1 fan and customer for about 7 years, it was very disappointing to see a tradition cut short.
