Ohh look another thread about the birthday gift. It is great you feel entitled enough to complain about a free item. Glad you had to make your own thread instead of commenting on the other ones.

“Play more, whine less.” – Zypher.7609

I agree with your point about creating a new thread for a topic that has been discussed to death in who knows how many other threads, but….

“…free item.”

Hmm. So this item is available without spending any money ? I am pretty sure that only people who have spent money on GW2 get the minipet. When there is a threshold of, “must spend at least X amount of money,” to get something it is by definition not free.

Everyone who bought the game gets that minipet when their character turns 1 year old. You don’t have to spend money in the gem shop to get that mini.

But as a tradition from GW1, it is kinda expected to be a part of the game…either way, I spent money on the game, so you can’t say that it’s free.

That’s what what the guy I was responding to was implying, but thanks for your input.

What did you pay for the mini again? Oh wait 0.

Next.

Since we all had to pay for the game, I’m pretty sure we did pay something for it.

You paid for the game. What Arenanet was obligated to give you was five character slots, the ability to make characters to put in them, and all of the content that the game had as of its release (with bigfixes and balances as necessary).

Arenanet was not obligated to give us Halloween, Wintersday, Living Story, or even birthday gifts. NOBODY bought the game expecting these things to happen.

Prophecies had nothing but a single zone added to it and the first batch of green items for its entire first year. Maybe also the Titan quests. I’m unclear when those were added. And they got a Halloween event and a Wintersday event, but I do not believe they had any other holidays, not even ones which became staples later on, from April Fools to the two Canthan festivals to the special drops for Easter, Thanksgiving, and St. Patrick’s Day. No, none of those existed for the game’s first year (I just checked).

In comparison, we got a LOT more in our first year. Arenanet could have just did what they did with GW1, and take their time. We would have considered it our money’s worth either way.

I don’t know about you, but everything above and beyond the game itself came free. Other games would put in two, maybe three major holiday events, but charge for any actual new content.

And saying you “paid for” a birthday gift? That makes it sound like Arenanet was obligated to give you one. If they didn’t, what then? Would you demand a dollar back from the purchase price?

Arenanet didn’t have to do this. That, right there, is why it’s free. They put in extra effort and provided something they did not have to. It was a gift, given freely.

Even knowing that they did it in the first game doesn’t make it incumbent on them to do it in the second. And what’s more, they gave us MORE than a mini! They gave us an extremely potent booster item, plus a scroll that can fast track an alt to level 20. All of that? Also free.

The duplicates… yeah, it’s kind of odd. But, I get the feeling this was meant as an ACCOUNT birthday present, and the fact that people GOT multiples prompted them to make it by character. At the last minute, with no time to design more minis; their artists were busy on new SAB material, probably.

I am a proud, loyal, GW1 fan, having over 7000 hours invested, and my view isn’t really different. We were not even absolutely sure we would receive birthday gifts, or if we would be remunerated in some other way, or not at all. I suppose, when people’s expectations are not met, there is a feeling of disappointment. I expected nothing, and was pleasantly surprised at receiving 3 gifts (or more) per character. =)

Exactly.

My parents have both died. My dad died a painless but slow death. My mom was found lying on the bathroom floor on Christmas Eve.

Bad things happen everywhere to everyone at some time. That doesn’t mean that people can’t complain about the small things and want sympathy or it to be changed.

But… anyone who doesn’t just bend over and take it is someone who thinks they’re entitled to better. Entitled! Do you have any idea how despicable they are? Forget definitions, they think they’re Entitled to improvements!

There’s a difference between feeling entitled and disappointed. I am disappointed because in GW1, their small but thoughtful birthday gift was actually unique and tradeable, which made me feel appreciated as a customer for being loyal. It is part of the reason I respected ANet so much as a company. Now this, among many other things over the past year, have shown that they care a lot less about their customers and more about getting their money. It is disappointing to me.

I 100% agree with you. My post was just to point out the idiocy of people like Zypher, who think anyone voicing an opinion that isn’t “BOY I LOVE THIS” being indicative of a sense of entitlement. You’ll see that a lot on these forums.

And there seldom seems to be moderator intervention, but be rude when bringing up a flaw…

The OP has every right to be sore. You would be complaining too if you actually played GW1.

That doesn’t make any sense.

The OP’s feelings, like anyone’s, are neither right nor wrong, he fells how he feels. He does have a right to post feedback to a company he purchased a product from, and he should be able to do it without ridicule from the community. Just like you should be able to post an opposing viewpoint without ridicule.

You are a closed-minded sheep. The OP has every right to be sore. You would be complaining too if you actually played GW1.

That doesn’t make any sense.

Following “closed-minded sheep” with such a ridiculous absolute statement makes for quite the ironic post.

Definitely bad manners. The OP’s feelings, like anyone’s, are neither right nor wrong, he fells how he feels. I’m just pointing out that saying “You would be complaining too if you actually played GW1.” is a false absolute statement that seems to exclude other viewpoints. And it was stated after using a phrase that implied others were excluding other viewpoints.

I haven’t made a statement about the OP.

I don’t care what they do exactly, as long as they don’t take a step backwards from what they’ve done before. This was a large step backwards.

On gw1’s 1st annivarsary it was epic with the release of the birthday presents. I had only been playing for maybe 3-4 months so i didnt get one. I remember the common ones selling for 100g and 10-50 ecto. The prices varied greatly (who was selling it and which one, what rarity), and since there was no trading post thier was no regulation. Fortunes were gained in a day & after a week the prices plumited.

My GW1 story:
I remember having around 300k gold, and picked up my first couple minipets for around 50-60k each. When i was able to sell them for 100k + 30 ecto, i started spamming everywhere buying mini pets pm me. I found a mini prince rurik 1st day, i bought for 100k + 100 ecto and sold it for 100k + 500 ecto. i had times where i had 20-30 mini pets, and sold them all. I made around 10-20m gold in a few days. It was crazy. I was so addicted to trading minis i hardly even slept those 1st few days. All i could think was: $ + =:D profit$ +, must make +$. Clearly not thinking straight from lack of sleep.

Eventhough, i was late starter for GW2, again, I can see how those who played GW1 are dissapointed. The epic rewards of the 1st GW, & those 1st players who got thier gifts got more gold selling them then most had ever gotton playing. Gw2’s birthday gifts are pretty lame in comparison. And i’m also soo sorry i can’t swindle all those poor souls out of thier precious birthday gifts again

I can’t understand why anyone can defend their birthday fiasco honestly.

Now I’m very mellow at most of what happens to the game and I always try to see the reasoning behind some decisions. However, on this one I can only write it down to ‘lack of effort’. This underwhelming gift clearly had no line thought or effort put into it. In fact it’s very, very obviously that a cut and paste was put in in favour of the gem store.

Queen mini is an obvious development for the Queens Jubilee story line. The scroll already existed and the booster is just a combination of several existing boosts. And then a new mini pack was conveniently released at the moment we were expecting a random minipet gift for our birthdays… come on, it’s crystal clear isn’t it?

Joy to the world, ignorance is bliss
