It's been quite some time....
“Is the community still as cordial as it was?”
I believe it is even better.
The biggest power of this game is that there are lil reason to be trollish or poiseness. In other games in the genre I’ve played there are things like loot-stealing and even resource stealing. The trinity makes the tank blame the healer, the healer blame the dps and the dps blame the tank. GW2 has always been very focussed on cooperation and avoiding those situations.
Whenever things go out of hand, Arenanet jumps in. For example the Queensdale train. People where constantly bickering over it and so Arenanet nerfed it. Those kind of steps have kept our community better then average.
Off course there are still trolls. You can’t ban them forever and trolls often aren’t always trolls. often there are other (still unforgivable) reasons for bad behaviour.
The game had a lot of changes. Including a new player experience and the new living world end game content. So lots of things to do while levelling. the best thing…No monthly fees. the game is yours.. All you need to do is download the updates and find out for yourself!

Thank you much for your input. Ahhhh, the Queensdale train… I remember those days. Glad to know they nerfed it.
Is it all that difficult to find guilds? That really was the main issue I had. I’m a chatty person as it is, and it was quite boring being alone.

Personally I don’t do guilds. too much drama. but then again..I got a long friendslist and mapchat
It shouldn’t be hard to find a guild, but it can be hard to find a good one.
The guildsection is a good place to look for guilds. Best is to try out a few.

That is the nice thing about this game. You can take time off (maybe logging in once in awhile, maybe not) and not be paying. In reality when you are active, there is the gem store but it is not a requirement. Quite a few games have both a subscription fee and an in-game store.
edit: Oh, as to end game content? Mostly it is the high level zones and a few other things. The nice thing is you downlevel in lower zones so things that were difficult at 10 are just as difficult at 80 (albeit with better equipment and traits).

heh… game got now mega servers OP. To find an active guild isnt a deal anymore, community does just fine…even though those who stayed all the time (such as myself) do suffer quite a bit cause of lack of content…but if you come back with a fresh mindset you wont even notice that till the expansion hits. Leveling is now…depending on your point of view either better….or…eh.. just imagine kittens flying all over the place for a few lines. Make yourself a picture by trying it…cause the opinions on leveling go in completely different paths depending on who you ask. End game right now is the usual stuff…fractlals.. dungeon runs.. wvw and stuff and two completely new zones leading up to the expansion and you also could invest some gems and unlock the complete LS s2. Eh.. game is in a good state imo. Also welcome back
Thanks much for all the insight and thoughts guys.
From this:
I was also more of a PvE junkie (I was your typical WoW fanatic at one point) and felt a little underwhelmed by the content. I pretty much power leveled my way to 80 on all my characters and tried to focus on “endgame” when there really wasn’t one.
I’d honestly not recommend returning. Many of us who play this way (myself included) would not recommend this game to other players who are looking for a challenging, interesting, or well-supported PvE endgame.
Keep an eye on the HoT announcements for what the “Challenging Group Content” deal is going to end up being. That will speak volumes about the direction ArenaNet wants to take this game: 100% pure casual, or a mix of casual and challenging content?
Even if it looks promising, I’ll be waiting until after it releases to listen to guildies and the dungeon trolls about it before buying. After watching the neglect of the PvE instanced endgame for the last 3 years, I won’t be buying HoT on faith that it will be good.
Of course, all of this assumes you’re looking for challenging instanced endgame (I’m guessing that from the ‘typical WoW player’ bit). If I’m wrong, and running around in open-world maps grinding the same 4-5 can’t-fail events for shinies is the endgame you’re looking for, then I’m sure you’d enjoy HoT :-P
Sorry if this sounds negative — I wish I could say something more positive, but this is my honest opinion.

When you left the game was continuously being updated with new and fresh content. But now because of the expansion there is nothing new being brought to the table so the content has gotten stale. Most veteran players only log in for 5 minutes to do dailies and gain the daily login rewards. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself bored after hitting 80.

I came back around 2 months ago, got a few friends of mine joining, so far we are having geat fun. Even tho i play actively (everyday for 1-3 hours) we still havent done it all, not even close. There’s alot more to do now (Zones/Quests/etc) than it was on release.
I’m sure you will have fun. And one more thing, when it comes to PvP 5vs5, it’s finally awsome, and it’s addictive as hell!
Have fun and welcome back!
Oh, and re: leveling experience…I’ve never been a fan of GW2 open world honestly. There really isn’t much immersive content, or perhaps I just lack the imagination to make it feel like I’m ‘in the game’. Playing GW2 feels like playing a game, not really an immersive fantasy sort of experience. Just my subjective opinion on it.
I did find ESO to do a really good job of creating an immersive leveling experience in an MMO. Everything is voice acted, and a lot of the NPC interactions are memorable and fun.
