Hello,
On the character I have been leveling of late I decided to use some of the items you can buy from vendors around the different maps, the consumable items which let you either use attack skills similar to other classes or boons. While some of these items can be considered useless 90% of the time, such as click to equip a Wooden Leg to which you earn yourself a branch to hit people with, others such as the Molachev kittentail, Air-Strike Grenade, Rock, Ogre Pet Whistle, Fire Elemental Powder and many others can play a large part in creating variations in our attacks, permitting more tactical and entertaining gameplay.

However there is a problem, the items themselves are not very user friendly, of cause by this I am not referring to the skills they provide you with, but instead the steps that you need to follow to access the skills they provide you with.
More than once I have ran into a wondering field boss, be it a champion or elite and decided to have a go at it, on my old characters this didn’t pose any issues due to the fact that I never bothered with the consumable items like the ones I mentioned above, however now that I have started using them their main weakness becomes obvious, the fact that you need to open your bag, find the item, double click on it, and then and only then can you use it to attack the boss.
Correct me if I am wrong but I assume that many of you like me like to have your bag stretched out so you can see all the slots without scrolling down, it is however because of this that I have died so many times trying to get out the items, I simply can not see the enemy nor any AoE attack markings.

What I would like to see in the game is the ability to add the ability to either key binding the items, using either the num lock number pad or the f6-f12 keys which aren’t used by any profession.
Or maybe give the player the ability to add a new action bar to the screen to which we can place these consumables in and use from the bar. Instead of Open bag, Double Click, Close Bag and Use Skill. It could be as simple as Click on skill, Use Skill.

Tell me what do you all think of this, I believe it would be a fun way to add a whole new range of abilities to a character’s skill set.

I agree. As it is, I rarely use them even after going to the trouble of collecting them. I think some of those Function Keys are in use, though. So better to have a little “quick bar” on the screen where we can put maybe five of whatever into – food, whistle, whatever.

Indeed, I have played many online games in the past and can say that the quick bar concept works well.
Quick bars and shortcuts are something many games implement, be it single player games like Skyrim and Fallout or multiplayer games like runescape, world of warcraft and is a function that most, if not all players use, it can be said that a quick bar is something that enhances gameplay.
While I understand that some players might not like it because its not great for roleplaying when an items appears in your hand, I think the vast majority of players would prefer to have a helpful gimmick such as a action or Quick bar to aid them in both traveling around the maps as well as in dungeons and personal stories.

To be perfectly honest when I first started playing guild wars I struggled a bit due to the fact that I was so used to having a quick bar from the other games I played.

I don’t see that as a problem. The thing that distinguished GW1 from WoW and other MMORPGs at that time was the fact you only had 8 skills to use and that was it. No quickbars to take half of your screen and no need to have every item in your bag mapped to a key. The beauty was that you had hundreds of skills per char and you could only use 8, and you had to think about which skills you’re going to take on which mission/area – not like WoW just take all the skills all the time.

Similar thing is in GW2, you have 5 weapon skills, 5 slots for profession/racial skills and f1-f4 profession mechanic skills. That’s it. So, like in GW1 you choose what skills to have at which moment.

So, as far as those quick slots go, to me they are not needed at all. And if they ever find their way in the game there should be just a few of them, but I don’t see any other use for them than to bind food or oils/sharpening stones to them because I think these items would benefit more from these slots than summonig ogres’ pets/elementals which have 30 min cooldowns and other players are better to have around in lvl 80 areas than rock dog. Those items are pretty musch useless because you don’t have to be in a party to benefit from other players nearby and almost always you can jump on a champ train and do it without problems.

While I can understand what you mean with the summonable pets not being as useful as players in a level 80 area, its not exactly the reason I would desire a quick bar/ action bar. If its something like a sharpening stone, which last last for enough time to clear a dungeon, then one could simply activate it at the start of the dungeon and then not bother with it. Same goes for pets.

What I am looking for however is a bar for items such as ‘Ball of Gunk’ a skill item that grants the player a ball of gunk to throw at a target area. It then applies random conditions within that target area for a period of time. This level 22 vender item can be said to be equal to a mesmer casting ‘Chaos Storm’ without the chance of boons.

Can you really say that in a level 80 area, this cheap item what gives you a number 5 skill move, with no cool down, is pointless?

Amen. Pretty much daily I am wishing for a Quick Bar. Like you, I was so used to having it in other games and struggled with it, but I just gave up. There are numerous items I would use if I had a Quick Bar to slot them in, but instead, the items languish in my inventory. A Quick Bar would be a great enhancement to gameplay indeed.

The fact is that many players have little idea what is available in this type of item because it is so difficult to use them that most don’t bother. I have said before and agree here that a slot for items would be great. For those who don’t want to bother with the extra slot – don’t use it.

Sooner or later, every player have a use for this feature. It dont have to be alot of slots, 2 is more than enough. For me I can see it being use for alot of stuff without opening the bag.

- Opening champ bag using keybind instead of mouseclick/macro
- Food/Utilities
- Bosster including Candy corn gobbler
- Tonic/Guild Banner
- Quick Weapon switch mainly for ele/engi
- Vanity stuff like chromatic ozze or Harpy Pheremones

More a workaround, but you can open your inventory, line the items you want up on either the left or right side of it, and drag it 90% offscreen – this’ll give you what you’re looking for, at the inconvenience of your inventory always being open and off the side of your screen (probably the left side, since you wont be able to see inventory, you’ll want to see things as they come in).

Disclaimer: I’ve never intentionally run around like this, but I’ve definitely tossed my inventory mostly offscreen when doing ‘stuff’ at vendors and things.

Indeed, as cyn.2157 said, I have tried the idea of setting my bag to the side so that I could pull items out as I need. While it works, its not without faults. The main fault being small AoE attacks, such as mines, as well as situations when fighting more than one enemy.
It is often the case that I am fighting a higher ranking enemy in front of me, be it an elite, champion or a boss, when I have been ambushed to the side from an enemy who was hiding under my inventory. There have been other times where I have rolled to avoid one attack, right into the zone of another… its a little annoying to say the least.

On a side note I frequently check this post so if any of you have ideas on how to make the consumable items viable in the current guild wars please put them here. Unless there is a blaring fault with them I promise to check it out.

+1 to quickbar.

I often run around with my inventory hanging totally off the right side of my screen so I can quickly use consumables like [Experimental Rifle], [Experimental Teleportation Gun], [Candy Corn Gobbler], etc.

The main problem I encounter is not the limited combat visibility (I consider that a reasonable trade-off), it’s that I can’t see how quickly loot is rolling in and therefore my inventory fills completely much more often than when I’m not using the “inventory-bar.”

I’d love to have a small quickbar for inventory consumables. Even 2-3 slots would be wonderful.

IMO a quickbar is needed, just to make all those consumables be actually consumed. I wouldn’t make it too extreme. IMO 3 slots are more than enough. But I think it would be a great addition.

IDK i would give 3 slots per character for free and then seel up to 5 more or so through the gem

I am happy to see that there are others of the same opinion as me. Guild Wars is a game which is no doubt fun to play, however there are faults as well, the lack of user friendliness for consumable items is one big example of this. As Kal Spiro said, I can only hope that the management will take notice of this discussion and see the potential in item shortcuts / hotkeys.

I dare not claim to know how far the potential of hotkeys / item shortcuts can go, I started this thread with combat variations in mind, but I have been reminded of other items such as; Mini game items like the transformation costumes, Food/Utilities, Boosters, Tonic/Guild Banners.

There was also concepts like a Quick Weapon Switch giving the player a whole new set of potential combat styles, for example a ranger (my main class) might start off with a longbow, attacking with long range shot, rapid fire and barrage before switching to the great sword, using swoop to make up the distance and following up with a mule, hilt bash. Swapping to a sword and dagger one could quickly apply conditions with serpent’s strike, stalkers strike, followed by hornet sting and a crippling talon before returning to a longbow for a point blank shot. Repeating such a combination.

While admittedly this would be impossible with the current games set up, it would certainly be fun to try. I’m sure that many of you could also come with with other clever combinations as well.

However as stated before, such talk is for naught if the developers fail to see the potential, as such other than making this thread as popular as possible, we can only hope for the future.

There’s just one single and dumb reason I’d like to see an item shortcut bar somewhere near the existing action bar.
I just got myself some rad travel item, and I’d like to have easy access to it whenever I feel like using it while traveling. Travel items are cool, but getting through the trouble of finding it among your hundred and so items just to have some little fun while running gets tedious pretty fast.
