The last month I was trying for that growing backpack item we get from the living world.
I finished the living world a long time ago, and got all the items, long before getting enough geodes to get the necessary recipe, and I happened to be short on gold.
Since the plant food can only be made once a day, and it’s extremely expensive on the tp, I’ve hoarded all those items needed for the back-piece, the items needed to make the other items, and the items needed to put them all together into the mystic toilet…

DO WE REALLY NEED THAT MANY ITEMS?
My inventory and bank are a junk yard! There are items for world events, Items for special events of the living world, rewards from old living world, items needed to create legendaries, items needed for crafting, items needed for salvaging, a carp ton of greens and blues that exist only to be salvaged, spare gear with different stat combinations you might need, materials that no longer fit into your collection tab (yet crafting still requires so many of them that they are never enough), foods, drinks, heart vendor tools, costume brawl potions you don’t throw away because they are one time use and…
Ironically, the gray items that the game considers junk aren’t as many as in other MMOs.

The game could have been played with so much less items to keep track off!

Here are some suggestions:

  1. Make event items appear in the interface instead of your inventory, similar to salvage in WvW, and disappear when the event ends.
  2. Reduce the drop rate of all blues and greens by half and double their salvage and vendor price.
  3. Reduce the material cost of all craft-able items that use certain common materials, and double the rarity of the said materials.
  4. Send all siege equipment on a separate inventory (exclusive to WvW), and limit the number you can carry instead to 3. (that would save up some server space, and put some strategy into that zerg fest)
  5. When building items from the living world, rather carrying all those seeds and cleansed waters and charged magafins, send them all instead to your home instance as a single intractable object, that upon touching it, it will show you a picture of the item you are trying to build and you’ll have to drag and drop the stuff you’ve gathered as a mini game.
  6. Enough with the mystic toilet and it’s 4 item rule! If you want to upgrade an item into something other, then spend the money and skill points directly instead of buying weird stuff from Miyani! Even better would be get rid of the forge, and spread it’s functions to various specialist across Tyria (e.×. someone in Ebonhawk that makes satchel recipies.) to give the world some variety.
…and don’t be toxic!

The only question I see you pose in your entire post is an all-caps and bolded “DO WE REALLY NEED THAT MANY ITEMS?”

This sounds more like a rhetorical question to me.

If we reduced the item count, then who would buy all the bank and bag expansions from the Gem Store?

Think its a conspiracy?

Most of them are salvagable blue and green trash that you wouldn’t keep in your inventory for long.
Thy should at least deal with those.

Personaly, i believe the mother of all problems is the mystic toilet. Whenever you want to build something rare, you have to gather all shorts of mumbojumbo and toss them in fours into the same pot. It makes you hoard tons of one-use stuff that each is taking a space in your inventory.

I don’t understand why you are banking ‘all those blues and greens for salvage only’.

Why aren’t you salvaging and/or selling/trading them on the spot?

Put everything you can from your bank into the tp at a high enough price that people wont buy them but a low enough price that you are comfortable with paying the fee. Storage problem solved.

SoS – Ele – Burn Me, Freeze Me, Blind Me, Pound Me — Wait…What?
Warrior – The New Burninator! Strongbad would be so proud!
Guardian – Burn for you, heal for me, block for me and uh…sorry Im all out of gifts.

This.
There is your answer.
I keep telling this myself all the time:
Don’t be greedy. Sell stuff. Throw something away. No one needs that many kittens.
I would love to see an expension to the purse, though…
