I love this game, I’ve been playing it since it launched and GW1 before that.

However, the sense I’m left with at the moment is of a game frozen in amber. Far too much time has gone by now without launch systems being fully realized, or new content being added.

I know there has been development – but it seems to have been focused on Living World with no real impact to character development, or reshuffling of systems already in place, like the trait system. I think both of these things are fine, but without content that is truly new and that helps players build and grow their characters, something is missing.

I’m writing the rest of this from the perspective of my current character, a human female Thief. Switch out the following with whatever race and profession you prefer.

It’s been two years, and:

-I still have no idea why it was important to select Lyssa as my god.
-Aside from a couple sections of the story, I see no impact from choosing that my parents died when I was young.
-I see no importance to selecting Noble as my origin.
-I haven’t noticed any real impact to selecting the Order of Whispers as my organization.
-The weapons available to me are the same.
-The skills, aside from a couple additions, are the same.
-While the world has changed in really cool ways, the game play aspect of navigating it is basically the same.
-There are no new races to choose from.
-There are no new professions.
-Quality of life annoyances, like being unable to turn off the name plates hovering over summoned pets, linger.
-And so on, and on.

As a human female Thief, I wish that:

-I gained access to a new skill by choosing Lyssa as my goddess.
-Gained access to a swanky nobles-only mansion with special costume options appropriate to my status.
-I had some permanent impact to selecting the “parents dead” story option.
-I had more benefits from joining the Order of Whispers – access to special weapons, skills, missions, costumes, etc.
-I had access to new weapons. Personally, I want Great Sword so I can use the katana skin (once it’s back up on the trading post).
-I had new skills to choose from, to mix things up.
-That there was more benefit to exploring, like more random treasure chests, or the chance to stumble across secret doors leading to randomly-generated mini dungeons.
-That there were costume options specific to each class, so I could create the ultimate look.

And going beyond that: we just need new stuff. Weapons that gain XP and level. New lands. New ways of advancing characters post level cap. Heck, I’d even welcome mounts or housing at this point.

Maybe an expansion is coming that will add new content. I don’t know. But if the last update was Anet’s attempt to attract new players, I think the real issue isn’t leveling but lack of any kind of significant development on the game. The Living Story stuff was cool but just didn’t cut it in terms of keeping things fresh. At this point I’ve swung my knives the same way 10 billion times. I think the core of this game is solid, it’s time to start building on this foundation.

Story like noble and dead parents.
It’s within your personal story, and upon any other change it’s changed accordingly.

Choosing Vigil, Priory or Order have it’s own unique story missions with decisions which accordingly give missions up to what you’re chosen.

Each order has their own skins of weapons and armor

-That there was more benefit to exploring, like more random treasure chests, or the chance to stumble across secret doors leading to randomly-generated mini dungeons.

There are hidden chests in whole world.
You have also Jumping Puzzles.

-There are no new professions.

Are you capable of playing them all flawlessly?
I doubt it.

-There are no new races to choose from.

Did you make all chars and races and did their own Racial MyStory?

-While the world has changed in really cool ways, the game play aspect of navigating it is basically the same.

Oh, so, Mount time?
No, we don’t need it.

As a human female Thief, I wish that:
-I had access to new weapons. Personally, I want Great Sword so I can use the katana skin (once it’s back up on the trading post).

google different game please

I agree that things are a bit stale, but segregating rewards and change purely for the sake of change are not going to help. Take a look around the forums, some big and hopefully impacting things are in the works.

“-I gained access to a new skill by choosing Lyssa as my goddess.”

Anet would have to go and make new skills from every choice like that for every race, good chance it’s never going to happen.

“-Gained access to a swanky nobles-only mansion with special costume options appropriate to my status.”

So nobles gets mansions, common folk choice gets a house and living on the streets gets what, a box? “Special costume options appropriate to my status”, buy a cloths tonic that makes you look rich and pick a mansion you can go in and pretend it’s yours. Problem solved. Again Anet would have to make new content for every race on this choice. Not happening.

“-I had some permanent impact to selecting the “parents dead” story option.”

Like what kind of impact? Seriously I can’t think of anything. What kind of permanent impact would result in choosing never recovered sisters body or missing out on joining the circus?

“-I had more benefits from joining the Order of Whispers – access to special weapons, skills, missions, costumes, etc.”

You do have special missions based on the Order you choice, it’s part of the story arc. As for the special weapons and armor.

“-I had access to new weapons. Personally, I want Great Sword so I can use the katana skin (once it’s back up on the trading post).”

We all want new weapon options for every professions and new weapons/skills or at least new weapon skins. At least Anet does make weapon skins.

“-I had new skills to choose from, to mix things up.”

Something else we all want, at the least new utility skills.

“-That there was more benefit to exploring, like more random treasure chests, or the chance to stumble across secret doors leading to randomly-generated mini dungeons.”

Randomly-generated mini dungeons would take a long time to program into the game and make it work. Something Anet doesn’t seem concerned about.

“-That there were costume options specific to each class, so I could create the ultimate look.”

Much easier to make and program one type of costume for each race/class instead of making different individual costumes for each race/class. Better to turn out new stuff quick that is the same for each race/class then taking the time and effort to make different stuff for each race/class.

Kill stuff to unlock weapons skills, most confusing thing I ever heard of. (sarcasm)

you have shown your level of intelligence by make invalid QQpost while 90% of stuff you want is already in game and you don’t see it.

Only one thing I certainly have noticed that isn’t in game are mounts which probably was your idea for a “new way of traveling” in game.

I need to lay off the weed since I think realistically? Anet going back and making changes to the character creation and adding stuff like special skills based on your choices, permanent impact on the game and your character based on the choices you pick means Anet would have to overhaul the game. Also how would they make that work with the players characters already created?

I’m all for new weapon types and new skills and existing weapons being able to be used by other profession but I’m also not expecting Anet to overhaul the entire game to please players demands nor am I expecting them to step to it and work as fast as they can to turn out new content to keep players happy and not bored.

Yea, I hate that as well. They should just press their big red buttons that say “ADD NEW CLASS” “ADD NEW WEAPONS” "ADD NEW SKINS. Hell, if I was working for Arena net, I’d be pressing those buttons all day.

OP the second part of your post is much better and more realistic than the first part of your post.

The easiest example is you don’t know why it was important to pick one over another. It wasn’t important…if you’re the kind of player who thinks in terms of mechanics instead of story. For many of us, any way we can differentiate our characters from other characters or even other of our own characters is a good thing.

When I choose a god for my human characters, it’s based on what I want those characters to be like and reflects my personality. It doesn’t need something in game to make that real. Because I’m immersing myself (in as much as I can anyway) into that character. Giving me another skill would ruin it a bit, because people would try to figure out the best skill for their profession that complements it, instead of what is my character like. You’ve simply missed the point of that system. You’re thinking in terms of MMO mechanics, not playing a role. And this is an mmoRPG.

But I think everyone would like new skills and weapons and more options. Just not one associated with one race and one choice. That’s not the way to go.

I don’t think they should tie skills to character bio choices, that’d mean that some choices would end up being inevitably better than others or you end up with all te extra skills being useless by design.

We do need new skills and new traits though. We need some sort of character progression after 80. You only have 1 chest and 2 hands so theres only so many skins you’d want.

To OP: About Katanas… I have a decent idea that you wanna make a Ninja as your thief with a Katana and the Ninja suit :P But to be perectly clear, Ninjas do/did not use Katanas. The ninja sword is Ninjató or something like that and is a Short sword with a straight blade.

So in my opinion Thiefs or Ninjas should not use greatswords as they are to heavy and slow and would not work as a quick, Small and stealthy weapon.

If it comes to ninja Japanese style weapons then

Katana = long sword
Wakizashi = short sword
Tanto = dagger

They could make Belinda’s stylized sword and dagger but that’s up to anet and making it into Gem Store.

Still the true ninja sword to the stories is Ninjato and also their dagger was the farmers tool Kunai?
Katana, Wakizashi and Tanto was used by other swordsmen like Samurai’s. no?

That depends.
That’s true that ninjas often were disguised as farmers, gardeners or servants.
But we’re mostly speaking about fancy assassins. More known as Shinobi.

and yeah, those weapons were used by samurais and not only.
For example Tanto was also used by women for self defense.

Tho depending on their design, they had different names.
