Custom Arenas – interesting. Though the word “rent” makes me sick to my stomach. I’m envisioning having to pay gems or a large amount of gold to “rent” a room for you and your friends for 24 hours. Obviously we’ll find out more in the near future, as Jonathan mentioned, but… I have a bad feeling about it. I was expecting the ability to do this for free, as is often offered by many other PvP-centric games. I’ve never seen this concept of renting before, and it has made a bad initial impression on me. It also sounds like this will be the closest thing to dueling we may ever get :/.

We’ll find out, I suppose. But it leaves a bad feeling in my stomach.

Paid server room = bad
Free = good

It is an interesting concept though. Oddly they don’t seem to want to do a ladder system which is why I shy away from SPvP.

Still no Random Arenas, still no deathmatch gametype. Still don’t care.

I don’t like Conquest at all. I don’t care how many frilly dresses you pile on top of it; I don’t like it, and am not going to play it. If that doesn’t concern you, then so be it. Nowhere in that article of “we’re listening to the players” do they even mention this, which tells me they have no plans of ever developing anything else, and are completely ignoring what is one of the most common complaints you see about sPvP.

I agree i don’t care about ways to do custom game modes if its the same style of pvp (capture points). Arena net should have gave us death match modes, capture the flag, and other type of modes.

Agreed with capture the flag as well.

Oddly they have entire builds that could be so very fun (Condition removal + speed buff) included in it.

As a carebear I wouldn’t mind larger (Not WvW large) BG style combat (WSG). Yeah I know it is WoW, but it might ease the type of player like me (PvE player) into more SPvP game modes.

Let’s say the monthly rental cost of a private server is 1600 gems ($20 USD). You’ll have a situation where people will join sPvP guilds only if the guild leader and officers have this. Although the 5v5 teams don’t have to be guilds, that is exactly what we’re seeing. It makes since you you have a five man team you’re practicing daily with you would form a guild. So although it’s not labeled as GvG and there are no guild halls, you could argue that by charging to rent an Arena every month for gems you have situation where the game studio is charging for practice space that was free in the first Guild Wars through the guild hall system.

ArenaNet should charge a small very small fee for these and they should also give players the option to host their own Tournaments off of ArenaNets servers. They’ve choosen to make the sPvP side of the game completely sandboxed so why would this be any different than Team Fortress 2 or any other competitive pvp focused game that allows local private servers. Why must every feature be monetized?

I actually don’t see renting servers to be that big of a problem. I find it similar to how Valve runs Team Fortress 2 servers. They have free servers anyone can play on and if you want to pay for a private server for more personalized play with just your guild or welcome guests you can have that too. It’s not just TF2 either it’s the entirety of the business model for every online FPS with dedicated server support ever.

Adding stuff to a boring sPvP has little chance of making it less boring.

I played GW1 for many years, participated in every BWE and stress test. So many years of devotion and so much effort put by the fanbase to get this sPvP.

This isn’t the way I like to be treated.

With Team Fortress 2 you can also set up a LAN for free -or- host your own server. That’s a huge thing…. I like Google’s motto: don’t be evil.

Is it still going to be 5v5? any chance we can have smaller matches like a 2v2 or 3v3?

They’re good features, but looming overhead is the fact that they’re paid features.

That, I believe, is the true priority here.

And I’m not blaming them for looking for ways to make a buck, just calling it for what it is.

I also believe if they don’t talk about a feature beforehand, it’s not that it isn’t ready, it’s that they’re still assessing what ways they can make money off of it.

And that’s a sad, sad way to approach BASIC FEATURES. Paid tournaments is fine. Custom arenas, meh, whatever. That either have come as paid features before the basic featureset is in place is questionable.

Hit level eighty
Priorities, what to do?

I like Google’s motto: don’t be evil.

Either I’m missing something or you’re being hyperbolic. I don’t see how ANet trying to monetize a product is being evil, especially since it’s not like they’re charging a monthly fee for most players. If you don’t like the idea of rented servers, that’s fine that’s your opinion, I just wouldn’t go so far as to say monetizing special features for those who want them to “be evil.”

@Zuggy: The sPvP side of the game is sandboxed from the rest of the product. Since GW2 is sold as a stand alone game and not a subscription based MMO I would expect the sandboxed sPvP content to be on par with games such as Team Fortress 2 (which btw is a game that had influence in GW2’s design).

It makes perfect sense to judge the sPvP side of the game with games like TF2. In TF2 you have for-pay/rented servers. You also have a the ability to run your own private server for free.

Ummm.. Where the hell is capture the flag, or team death match?
These are the things that sPvP requires. Not arena, not cam mode, not paid tournaments, the only thing that will make people actually play sPvP is MORE game
modes. It doesn’t matter what you do to conquest, or how you sprinkle your frosting on it, if you don’t put more variety in the PvP then it is dull and monotonous.

Why would you ever pay for a PvP tournament? For the possibility of winning gems, so I can buy more tickets? C’mon, this really isn’t that commercial is it? They really need money that bad, that I should fork over some cc for the gems to to buy a ticket? You realize this would be their golden egg, right? Its more than just buying cosmetic stuff or character slots. Now its pay to play. Obviously you don’t have to, but if you do, and you don’t suck, you get gems. To buy more stuff? For what. No, you pay more to PvP. Rinse and repeat. Now you pay more than the standard $15/mo sub.

Brilliant move for making more coin.

How about adding more modes to PvP?

Pay-to-PvP. That’s a new one. This isn’t MLG.
