Jumping "Boosts" and puzzles - exploit or not?

When trying to do jumping puzzle with a new character, I noticed I kept failing a jump I could easily do with a different character. Eventually, it hit me – the previous character had equipped a signet that gives a 10% speed boost, and that boost was enough to make the jump far easier.

Later, I noticed people using Swiftness to make some jumping puzzles easier, since the faster you are moving, the bigger your jump. Same logic as above.

Finally, I have seen a few players using Leap skills to help in jumping puzzles. Skills that make the character leap are often a safer way to jump, and they have a range bigger than anything our characters cam usually.

My question, to both ArenaNet and the community, is: are those things exploits or not? There are three questions here:

a) Is using a minor speed booster, like the +10% speed signets, to make a jumping puzzle easier, an exploit?

b) Is using Swiftness to make jumping puzzles easier an exploit?

c) Is using leap skills to make jumping puzzles easier an exploit?

View the definition of an exploit and that will be your answer.

To be more clear, it has no negative impact on the economy, on other players, or anything in the game whatsoever really.

The only thing it is doing is helping you reach the end goal of completing the puzzle, and therefor should be classified as nothing but “creative thinking.”

Speed runs were conidered an exploit. Anything novel is an exploit, expect a ban.

I agree, the bans are getting a tad bit ridiculous.

Using mobility skills to provide mobility?

Doesn’t sound like an exploit, sounds like using the abilities for exactly what they were designed for.

I agree, creative thinking is punished by Anet.

No. Creative thinking that negatively impacts the game experience for other players is punished by Arenanet.

I assume you’re referring to speed running dungeons, but no that wasn’t an exploit it was just being used for profits which was not what “Anet expected” instead of intended.

Can anyone link to an official source stating whether speed runs were or were not an exploit?

If not, why is it being discussed? Your personal opinion is not fact, you do not have the authority to decide if something is an exploit.

And I gave my opinion. Using mobility skills to increase mobility doesn’t sound like an exploit to me.

I have no problem with asking for opinions or giving them. What I have a problem with is people deciding and claiming that their opinions are fact.

You regularly see people state that the same thing is and is not an exploit, both stating it as a fact instead of saying they think it is or view it as one, and being unable to back it up with any official source.

:edit:

nd it wasn’t aimed at you, it was aimed at “no that wasn’t an exploit” in a dungeon speed run discussion a few posts back. I’d be interested in seeing a source on that.

Funny you mention that because when I attuned to air to make a jump (not for a puzzle) I noticed that I didn’t go any farther despite having a faster character. Good grief, they should at least program in common sense.

Not an exploit. I play an engineer, I don’t have a constant 10% speed boost. Very few jumps require a speed boost.

elementalist ride the lightning has given me so many amazing shortcuts.

I’ve found 2 shortcuts it can be used on in Obby sanctum, one of which skips several jumps that players like to camp.

Also there’s the dark room shortcut that swiftness enables.

Oh and ride the lightning can be used to reach the bottom key part of the other sanctums right after reaching the top key half.

I jump out of the level with jump shot. Was just in a cave with bad textures and no way out. Jump shot makes me do jumping puzzle so much easier at times. I think every class has a skill to do long ranged jumping. If you do the vista in lions arch, you had to use a skill like that to get.
