I love the fact that Anet has included a greater variety of dailies into the mix, none more so than good ol’ jumping puzzles.

One thing is I don’t like however is lazy players looking for an easy out by only asking for ports and not making any effort at all. You participate in other dailies because you have to, why should this be any different? I get that players have busy, hectic lives and whatnot, but there are plenty of other dailies they could do…

Anyways I propose Anet in the same fashion of disabling gliders throughout jumping puzzles ( for the most part), somehow blocks the use of Mesmer portals and portal creating devices for the dailies.

So in saying that…any thoughts or ideas?

Just the same idea I already voiced when I heard gliding will come to Tyria:

Add a jumpingpuzzle-starter to the start of each jumpingpuzzle. You use this starter to receive a buff.

  • Without the buff you can’t loot any chests within the puzzle
  • With the buff you can’t deploy your glider
  • You loose the buff upon using a mesmer portal
  • You loose the buff when leaving the jp area

EDIT!! should be noted I’m only referring to the specified daily jp.

It is possible that players are looking for ports because they hate jumping puzzles. With that being said, I would urge Anet to drop jps from the daily rotation. Please go back to the at launch policy on jps where they are there for those who like to do them but aren’t required gameplay.

They are not required gameplay, plenty of other dailies to do.

I love them but if there’s someone porting when I get there, I’ll take the port then do other stuff with that time I’ve saved. I actually like them being in rotation, nice reminder of things I probably haven’t done in a couple of years.

Most of the time when I see it, it’s people offering ports, rather than people asking for them. I’ve offered ports myself for hours on end on certain jumping puzzle dailies with one of my mesmers (Portmatt’s Laboratory in Bloodtide Coast is a good example). I rarely saw anyone actually asking for a port, even on that difficult one.

They’re not a requirement. Do the other dailies. You know you don’t have to do just pve dailies right? You can drop into wvw and do big spender and it counts as a daily and then do two other pve dailies for instance.

I am against the mindset of players who have a need to want to control how other players play the game.

Who is controlling you? Players? Devs? Otherworldly voices in your head?
Pretend your problem isn’t jumping puzzles but gathering.
Pretend you are in a guild.
Yesterday this happened to me. One of my guildies suddenly said, unasked, that there was a strawberry patch that could be gathered for the daily and posted the WP and directions from the WP. I was aghast! I want to discover things for myself! Ruined the game. Posting things like this in chat should be banned!

It’s not a requirement, there is a list of things you can choose from to get 3/3
Do 3 and get 2 gold
If you then did all the others you should get their rewards too so a whole bunch of relevant chests.
If you don’t do any of the dailies the world doesn’t end, you just don’t get 2 gold. I didn’t do the daily on Monday as I spent all evening doing the SW lost gold badges achievement. That was my choice to play that way.

I love doing jumping puzzles, sometimes I do them just because I remember there’s one nearby, so naturally if they’re one of the dailies (and it’s a day when I want to do them) I’m very likely to choose that and to do it myself without asking for a portal.

Having said that I completely understand that there are some people who are not capable of doing jumping puzzles. Not because they’re lazy but because they literally can’t. They don’t have good enough reflexes, some people literally struggle to move the camera and their character at the same time, or just to push two buttons at the same time, they have a very poor internet connection which makes timing jumps virtually impossible or any one of numerous other reasons.

In those cases I think it’s entirely reasonable to ask for help with a puzzle. Especially in an MMO where part of the game design is that there will be other people around who can help you with things you cannot do alone.

Of course they could get around it by going into one of the PvP matches dedicated to doing dailies – where attacking other players is forbidden and everyone takes it in turns to cap points for a guaranteed win. I’m sure the OP disapproves of that too, but at least they wouldn’t have to be offended by the sight of it!

I always wonder if people who complain about Mesmers portalling for daily JPs also complain about people who let others farm their home instances for the forager/miner/lumberer dailies. Do they want guild hall nodes removed as well because you can do the HoT gatherer dailies in there? Or maybe they want every easy vista in the game moved because it’s ‘too easy’ otherwise? Do they complain about people who ask ‘events?’ in map chat because they don’t know/can’t be bothered to disable their personal stories so they can see where the events are themselves, turning map chat into a bizarre chorus of Finding Nemo seagulls?

Gamers are gunna game the game. As a player, it’s your call as to what limits you’re willing to put on yourself as to how far you’re willing to go; as to what is an acceptable amount.

I think it’s in general a bad idea to implement and police restrictions unless the health of the game and economy is at stake. I’m confident ANet will make changes when this is the case. I don’t feel this is one of those situations.

“Play how you want,” extends to playing within the spirit of the game as you see it. ANet provides overarching guidelines and intentions that we all must play within, sure, but that just help us to have some commonality within how we perceive that spirit (and a framework to keep the game healthy).

The problem with both the jumping puzzle dailies and the OP’s proposal to ban portals is that there’s a fundamental difference between doing the Jumping Puzzle normally and when it’s a daily, and that’s in the number of players involved. Between the visibility issues and the massive lag spikes, jumping puzzles are a lot harder when they are packed with people going for their daily. The Jumping Puzzle dailies are theoretically nice because I have a limited time to play, and I’m not waiting around for a specific world boss to spawn or chasing events that are cleared by the time I get there (I’m looking at you, Southsun Cove).

I regularly ran JP runs for members of my guild to help them with achievements, and back when we had monthly achievements I would speed-clear the 12 Monthly JPs as a game, so I know most of them like the back of my hand (the only regular one I’ve never cleared without help is Not So Secret). Recently, I repeatedly couldn’t stick the jumps in the easy Antre of Adjournment during the daily either because I couldn’t see or because the game would lag during the jump and I’d overshoot. Went back the next day… completed with no problem. I had no problems doing the daily with Demongrub Pits, Shattered Ice Ruins, or Shaman’s Rookery, as the jumps aren’t the real obstacles. On the other hand, there are puzzles like Professor Portmatt’s Lab, where the consoles won’t work with multiple people trying to use them at once, and so getting a portal is the only real option.

I don’t really mind other people using portals. Portals just make me feel like a skillless newbie when I do, hence I generally find it sad that people feel the need to.

Pretty much the same reason why I would say that I would totally support blocking portals in Jumping Puzzles. Though on the one hand it’s sort of a community building thing, I guess? Help out the people unable to/lazy to do things. Plus I can hardly blame people for seeking the easy way out, because that’s pretty much what humanity does. We make things easier for ourselves all the time.

Other than that, what about the other way, and simply allow gliding in puzzles? Sure, it doesn’t have the community building thing that portals and teleport to friend has., but at the very least it requires some skill in certain cases to do it successfully, if not that in many many cases gliding is no use when gliding upwards.

PLUS, when you finally went all the way to the top of some Jumping Puzzle, then it’s usually a huge letdown that when you jump off in order to glide you sometimes just fall all the way down rather than profit froma nice glide off the top of a Jumping Puzzle.

In any case, it’s something ArenaNet should’ve thought about a bit more rather than being so overzealous with blocking gliding for “making Jumping Puzzles less cheesable”, and then just ignore the whole portaling thing.

A bit of consistency would be nice.

The Mesmer portals are just another of many tools players can use.

  • Many Mesmers use portals as a safety net in rough spots to avoid having to restart from scratch in the event of a fall. Nothing wrong with that.
  • Almost every player uses some sort of speed boost to make a long jump now and then. Nothing wrong with that.
  • I’ve seen sword warriors use Savage Leap to get across gaps too great for other Professions. Nothing wrong with that.
  • Rifle Engineers can use “Jump Shot” to make great leaps. Nothing wrong with that.
  • Anyone can acquire the “Experimental Teleportation Gun” or the “Experimental Rifle” and use it to their advantage in a Jumping Puzzle. Nothing wrong with that.

This is a community game. People are encouraged to help one another. If a successful jumper helps out some poor (or yes, lazy) jumpers, it probably makes everyone involved feel good.

Nothing wrong with that.

Why do I have to fight during 2 hours in DS to open a chest? Why do I have to farm for months to craft a legendary? Why do I have to play all those dungeons to get that title?

Would I open DS chest if it spawned at the pact camp every 2 hours without any requirement? Yes. Would I do the meta again? No. Or maybe once every 6 months. Did I feel satisfaction when I completed the meta? Definitely.

The problem with portals is not so much that people who aren’t skilled enough to complete a JP get the reward (daily, or achievement), it’s the fact new players will be tempted not to even try the JP to get the reward immediately, and therefore completely miss a content they may end up enjoying.

It’s like the level 80 boost. I love it, but I also think letting us use it on our first character is a huge mistake. I don’t care if a new player gets to level 80 the day he buys the game. What I do care about is the fact I know if I was a new player, I would have used it too, and I would have missed the whole pre-level 80 content (you know when you go back to low level areas with a lvl 80 character, you rush through things and can’t enjoy them as you do with a low level char).

Now, of course, portals have always existed. What is new however is the fact you’re now guaranteed to find one for a JP every day, which wasn’t the case. Anet has started to cheapen and therefore destroy content from the game (with the last patch: JP and the whole leveling process for your first char), and that, I care about. For the others, but even for me who have already played this content. Because it’s a MMO. And because MMO are not fun when played alone after the population has been driven away by the lack of content.

So yeah, remove portals from the JP, and add another PvE daily to the rotation.

That might be asking a lot.

If you only want easy dailies like the gathering ones, ask for that instead of asking people to play the game for you so you don’t have to do it yourself (“any mesmer @ JP?”). I don’t give a kitten about the dailies. But I do mind Anet’s been destroying some content (JPs) while trying to promote it through dailies (cf my post above).

The only ones I’ve seen making a fuss about this is a couple of individuals on the forum. If the puzzle is easy, people don’t ask for a port. It’s only if it’s hard, which can truly be beyond some people’s ability, that they ask for help in this cooperative PvE game.

I did today’s JP on my Mesmer and afterwards stood there for several minutes and asked if anyone wanted a port. No one did. Where were all the lazy people that some are complaining about?

The other day, the JP daily was the easier of the JPs in Malchor’s Leap. I was 2/3 through it when a mesmer started porting. I finished it normally.

I also used gliding. I have completed that JP before gliding existed — in fact, it was one of the first JPs I have done. I thought it was more fun with gliding.

One thing I like about the JP dailies is that I now see a bunch of new JPs that I haven’t seen before. I will sometimes try it a bit and then take a portal after I fall a couple of times and get bored, or continue if I like the puzzle. I have also progressed two collections that required the JPs that were the daily at the time.

I have a job in real life and work hard at it. I don’t want a game to be my second job. I’ll try the content, and if I stop enjoying it, I’ll accept a shortcut.

I get that some people feel that watching other people use portals or gliders cheapens their achievement. So, I’m okay with you have bragging rights for doing it the hard way — the way some people finish other games on hard mode or with some other limitations. We can both coexist in the same game.

I don’t really care how people choose to do jumping puzzles, but at the same time, I would be interested if ANet wanted to go back and convert some of them into adventures – without the special skills the HoT ones give you, but they could and probably should disable gliding and portal use while the adventure is active. If the rewards for adventure completion were appropriate, that’d make a pretty nice branch of extra stuff to do.

Next set of requests to prevent ‘lazy players’ from ‘looking for an ’easy out’ and ‘not making any effort’:

  • Prevent use of /say or /map to request invites to home instances. “It trivializes completion of harvesting dailies.”
  • Prevent use of city vistas to complete Daily Vista. Prevent gliding to within 5,000 units of any vista.
  • Daily Mystic Forger: prevent use of any mystic forge node other than the main one in Lion’s Arch. Disable mystic forge conduit on days when this is a daily. “If players can’t be bothered getting to LA, they shouldn’t get credit.”

Oh no, someone is using words that I don’t like. Let’s make a nonsensical parody about it.

It’s pretty much human nature to find the easiest most laziest least amount of effort way to tackle a problem. Our whole civilization is build on it.
