Junk Items to Remove
Junk items whose value is mere copper only serve to detract from the gaming experience by forcing a player to return to a vendor repeatedly.
or you could… you know…. just delete them from your bag instead of visiting that vendor. problem solved without removing them from the game

I figure I get a couple of gold/week from ‘junk’ such as you describe. And I don’t “return to a vendor repeatedly” — just once at the end of a session for that toon (or less often if it’s a toon parked at a JP).
There are a couple of reasons to dish out liquid rewards via ‘junk’ instead of coin:
- People don’t notice coin drops. As you say, they go directly to the wallet and most of us don’t realize the value.
- Most people like getting a lot of junk more than they like getting an occasional single item worth the sum of the junk.
- It’s a way of standardizing loot table values and making Magic Find count — low MF gets more junk; high MF get more stuff. (On average, over long periods of time; past performance is no predictor of future earnings; your mileage will vary; don’t bend, spindle, or mutilate.)
Plus, ANet can put some of the items into collections and it adds some color to otherwise same-old/same-old drops.
