So i have just come back to the game. i logged in and bang i didn’t have a clue what to do! I am just so lost. I havn’t yet purchased HOT but i will if I get back into the game. so all im asking it:

1. What should I start doing to ease me back into the game?

2. How do new classes work? do i need HOT to get them? i’m talking about druid etc..

3. Is HOT worth buying now or should i wait until i’m back on track with the game?

Ive got alot more questions but will probably work things out myself any help will do! Thanks

1. What should I start doing to ease me back into the game?

Depending on how long you’ve been gone, some might recommend starting a new character and playing “from scratch.”

If you still have the general hang of the game, try starting with things you used to enjoy. Or try jumping into some of the easier open world content (some world bosses, some zerg farming, some hearts) just to relearn the ropes. Up the difficulty as you start feeling more comfortable again (shouldn’t take too long).

2. How do new classes work? do i need HOT to get them? i’m talking about druid etc..

Yes, you need to own HoT to get the elite specs for the classes. To unlock the elite spec, you need to spend hero points on the track. To fully unlock the elite, you need 250 hero points.

After which, it’s just a matter of slotting the elite spec into the elite slot on the specializations tab.

Depending on how long you’re been gone – hero points replaced skill points, and only come from leveling from 1-80, and after 80 only from skill challenges, now named hero challenges. Specializations are basically what they renamed the trait lines.

3. Is HOT worth buying now or should i wait until i’m back on track with the game?

Personally, I love the elite specs and I’ve spent hours in Edge of the Mists farming scrolls (as an alternative to running around the maps for hero challenges), so I would absolutely say “yes, get it!” BUT, I am biased.

The better advice would probably be:

  • get back into the swing of the game
  • determine if its something you enjoy
  • do some research on what HoT offers to determine if you feel its worth its price tag
  • then buy it if so

Feel free to toss me any more questions. I’ll answer them if I can.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Depending on when you stoped playing GW2 there might be more or less new stuff to cover.

In general I’d recommend just try playing a new character and get used to the game as a whole. If possible, message old friends/guildies and start doing things with people you know.

Otherwise, checkout Bog Otters mini guide for returning players. It’s slightly dated but still fun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ce_dvXJercI&list=PLMgOinWh2Y7FbZyBhlqgHoPI2w8_76_1w

To answer your questions:

1. try to familiarise yourself with the gameplay in general. Hard to give advice since we don’t know when you quit.

2. the elite specialisations (which you are refering to) are unlocked during the HoT content. There is 1 new class which is HoT only too, the revenant.

3. a total subjective point. Some will say no, others yes. As far as getting reaquainted with the game it’s certainly not mandatory. Maybe give the game a couple of days a go and if you enjoy it, read up and decide if you want to get HoT. Personally I’d say yes, but that’s just me.

Beat me to it. What Lan said.

Just started playing again myself a few weeks back. First thing I did was clear out my bank (it was a total mess).

Then I picked my personal story back up. I completed it last week – the first time since launch I’ve seen the personal story through to the end and I’m glad I did, it gets so much better once you reach Orr!

From there, I decided I’d do LS season 2, I used to login during it, knowing I’d want to play it one day. Before I did LS, I picked up HoT to unlock gliding and Daredevil. Then I ground out all of my remaining Hero Points from the vanilla maps (a lot of them).

Completed LS. Have done a few events and started doing my dailies again. I’ve now just started on HoT.

The last few weeks have been a blast! Like you, I was pretty lost when I started again, but following the Living Story helped me find my feet a lot and really connect with the world. Hero points were a bit of a grind though.

Just a small addition since hero point grinding can be anoying. The Hero challenges in HoT give 10 hero points a piece instead of 1. It is more than possible to max your elite specialisation with HoT only challenges (though likely tricky on a first character).

For the more difficult challenges, there are often people running Hero point farms in the new maps. Just join a group and get them done that way.

Yeah, I read about this when I started again. I just wanted to get all of the vanilla ones and complete the personal story/living story before I started HoT. I wanted HoT to be brand new and fresh (and in order :P)

I just returned as well, after a few month hiatus. Honestly, I’m loving all of the changes so far. Rolled a new character and am leveling it up fresh and plan on going into HoT fresh. So stoked to finish up the main story and get into HoT.

This really is a great game.
