Just hit level 80 with 13G on my first hero
Congratulations.
You might find the Wiki to be informative (link above), or the sub-forums, ‘Players Helping Players’, or ‘Ranger’.
Good luck, and happy adventuring.
What do you enjoy doing? Do that. Then get better at that and ask for advice about that. The dungeon running crowd won’t help you at all in PvP and vice versa.
Now the REAL grind begins. Here’s the guide I used to gear up.
If you don’t want to do it for fun I wouldn’t worry about professions until it comes time to craft ascended weapons and armor it’s too much of a gold sink. You can see http://www.gw2crafts.net/ for estimated costs.
For me the most fun is EOTM or Silverwastes farming but every body is different.
I’m a Charr Ranger and I don’t understand the traits or the lines or what skills to use, or even what weapon to use, I have the same pet I started with, I randomly have an exotic weapon that I might have gotten for purchasing the Heroic version, my cooking is level 1 and my leatherworking is level 50, I haven’t spent any laurels, karma, or other types of currency, and I leveled by randomly doing random stuff in random zones
so whats your point?

No worries, no need for that as a Ranger. Just use longbow skill 2 and pewpewpewpew your way through Tyria. Enjoy! And if you sometimes feel trolling your fellow heroes around you (or even every time the skill is off cooldown), just use longbow skill 4 and push back your enemy as far as the mists are once every time AoEs are placed under an enemy or melee classes popping their long cooldown skills!

Wind your neck in, boy. He’s asking what to do next.
First, figure out what weapons/skills you like to use and are comfortable with. Then, read what the traits in the different trait lines do. Try to choose traits that complement your playstyle
Also, consort the wiki about where to get more pets. Pet hunting is fun and takes you to all kinds of places. You might also like to do you personal story, though its rewards do get kinda pointless when you are way beyond the required level…

and this makes me say: try things out
do the dailies for the different things to see how they play, and don’t limit yourself to only one thing… you know there are people who both run dungeons and play pvp
No grind really he can get full exo gear in less than a week that is almost as good as ascended gear ;D
Cool! Something I find fun on a ranger is that you can solo a lot of group event champion bosses. If you manage your pet aggro correctly, you can just pew pew with your longbow and kill them. Be sure to grab tanky pets.

Unlocking traits, however….
That’ll be barrels of fun.

Because we can’t be angry about both?
Since you have limited gold I suggest you buy lvl 80 rare armor and weapons with beserker stats off the trading post and slot ruby orbs in them. Then go to your home WvW borderland(press B to bring up the screen to go there) you’ll be in a big castle head south into the castle and find the laurel vendor you should have enough laurels and badges of honor from achievement points to buy an ascended amulet( you should get the one called the Distinguished Circle of Logic). You can also get ascended rings from this guy at a good price if you don’t like fractles but you probably don’t have enough laurels/boh left now. Now you wan to buy rare earrings and ring from the TP you’ll want ruby or opal whichever you can get cheaper( if they cost too much you can buy green(masterwork) ones since you gonna replace them later anyway. You’ll want to eventally upgrade your armor to exotic beserker with ranger runes and you jewelry to asended/exotic. For a backpeice you can buy a rare Lucky Ram backpeice on the TP for 30-40 silver currently and upgrade it to exotic in the mystic forge later, you need to right click on it to chose the stats(beserker) then slot a ruby orb in it.
Okay now that your geared decently you’ll want traits start with steady focus, signet mastery, piercing arrows, spotter, pets prowess, pets might, quick draw, strength of spirit, vigorous spirits, read the winds, and predators onslaught. You can look on you trait panel to see what you need to do to get them if its too much of a pain then you can just buy them from the profession trainer. For how you should set up you traits 6/5/0/3/0 is a good set up for pve.
For what to do now, what ever you want :p, okay so things you can, do hunt down all the pets, check out dungeons/fractles, check out WvW/EOTM, check out silverwastes/Drytop, hunt down you other traits, finish your personal story, check out the world bosses, work on 100% map completion or just sit in LA and talk to people the world is your oyster have fun(the most important part).

NPE. Working as intended….
So I joined a guild and we did a Fractal, I ended up getting 7g off it (just sold everything I could) and some ascended stuff which I put in the bank, and this was after I dropped 5g getting 6x berzerker’s + masterwork rings and earrings and an amulet and exotic weapon for about 5g total
I hesitate to spend my laurels and karma and stuff like that on gear because I’d rather get mounts / pets / collectibles, but it doesn’t seem like there’s much of that in this game …. outside random dye colors for 50s each which I’m not a huge fan of since I just want teal everything …
But I guess I can work my way through the living world story (it’s soloable???) and see what happens
