Just put some effects on it and call it new?
My take on the subject is pretty close to the exact opposite of the OP.
Personally, i feel your being somewhat petty. I can think of all kinds of armor pieces in game that I would love with the right effects, that I have no interest in the appearance other wise.

Am i really being petty?
Glitter and sparkles were supposed to be part of “rare” items and weapons, however we are getting into territory where we have an oversaturated marked of these items.
While it is a good method to put some life back into a more simple piece, it still doesn`t loose the fact that we had it before.
So if you promote something with “new” and it turns out to be just a “simple” effect beeing placed on a commonly available item, it does feel cheap and “lazy”.
I do not say that they should never reuse assets. I just think, that they should be aware of what they are showing us with it.
Am i overcritical? maybe, but is it weird to expect “new” stuff, if they advertise things as “new”?
They had a perfect system for “old assets” ingame with the mystic forge and now we see these assets comming up in the gemshop beeing overpriced (story items at least have context)
I am courious. Do you really want the game to go that way?
I am actually scared that they will continue this road, which could hurt them in the process (though someone will always buy these things and will be amazed by all these effects…)
I don’t suppose anyone would be very happy if they bought say a car that the seller claimed was new but it turned out to be a 2nd hand car with a new coat of paint. I doubt anyone would accept that irl so why accept it in games?

It’d be more like buying a knockoff. It looks similar to the original, but has more features to make it look better, even though it actually isn’t.
People accept that IRL all the time, because they’re cheaper, and in some cases, it makes them look like they have the more expensive one.

I agree with you coglin. I like the Flamekiss armor it was awsome, so I got out my credit card and got it for my sylvari. There are many other armors that would look good with effects added to them. As for the normal human T3 it is meh to me; if I wanted it I would of gotten it for my human, but it doesn’t look good to me. And now my flamekiss armor is getting taken away from me because of a few whiners on the forums.

The bad part is, that so many complained about what I consider is a foolish desire to feel special with the T3 cultural armor. When it is just as easy to take out your credit card and buy gems, convert them to gold, and buy the same T3 cultural armor.

Well, it is not about the T3 here. It is about the overall designdirection.
Yes, these items/armor might look great, the flamekissed looked cool and reminded me of an eldar farseer for example…
However, that is beside the point.
It is mostly about comunication, a basic design for the game as well devaluing existing properties.
1) Right now these items are an insult to everyone who took their time to get the “normal” version of the items.
If they were planing on revamping old skins, then the direction they should have taken is more akin to GW1, in whcih they had an “elite” version of almost every armor type, which allows for said special “epicness”.
2) The game out of the box had very few “special effects” weapons. They were rare and the cool ones were the legendarys and some hard to get like “infinite light”. This was a simple but still epic designchoice, because it all felt more natural.
Now it goes in the direction tohave everyone beeing sparkly, which makes even the legendarys look “outdated” and the only cool thing about them is the ability to swap their stats on a whim.
They are actively devalueing their own creations. Even the ones they hold as the long term goals for the players.
3) if any i is not about money. It is the way how you aquire this items and what the design philosophy is behind them. If you lash on it because of recent missteps by anet, then you have not read what i have written at all.
I am just concerened about the future direction of the fudamental design of the game.
More bling, then substance…
4) Yes, GW1 had a similiar reuse of items. However these items were ingame and available only at certain places. the “green” weapons.
These looked special, sometimes similiar to ones you could aquire inside the game allready.
However they were not as easily distributed as the ones we are getting with gw2.
5) Again, i am all for reusing skins in a sensible matter. You have the assets, so why not use them. However if it breaks immersion or destorys an ingame balance you should try to refrain from certain conversations.

well to be fair the flamekissed armor costs around 68-70g atm or $10. while the t3 piece cost 119g or $30 with gems only leaving you a little bit for transmute crystals and maybe a little more left over. the flame kissed armor probably doesn’t require crystals either.
The flamekissed doesn’t count toward the emperor title achievement. You don’t only buy the T3 when you do so, you also buy a piece of achievement counting towards a title.
Cultural weapons can be bought by anyone, nobody is complaining about it. Opening cultural armors to about any race could have opened possibilities to some really cool looks (which is what this game is about) and now it’s just gone.
