Is it reportable to do a giveaway that requests the users spam map chat with numbers? Because people keep doing it on certain servers I’m guesting to so now I’m curious.
By spam I mean *spam*. Easily 20+ entries from several players just flooding the chat with numbers.
Anyone? It’s an honest question.
I would ask a moderator to be honest…
I would ask a moderator to be honest…
And how would I go about doing that? Just PM one?

let’s……. pause and analyze here. someone is doing a giveaway. meaning, they’re taking something that they have, and giving it to people. apparently in the form of a contest. i.e. they’re being generous. for there to be 20+ people, what they’re giving away has to be pretty nice, since there’s that many responses. i’d wager something along the lines of a precursor, or perhaps even a legendary itself. i.e. they’re being VERY generous.
now, let’s look at the other part of this. you said this is happening on servers that you’re guesting to. let me repeat that. this is happening on servers that YOU are GUESTING to. meaning, you’re a guest on their server. do you make a habit of going into your neighbor’s house and telling them where they should put their sofa?
so, let’s put this things together, and this situation is that a guest is coming in and trying to get someone into trouble for being generous…… because 20+ people are typing numbers into map chat to try to win some form of contest. quite frankly man, you’re being a killjoy in someone else’s backyard. and…… if you’re really expecting there to be anything of value in map chat, you’re going to be disappointed whether there’s a contest going on or not.

Way to not read any of the meat of my post.
From the rules you agreed to when creating your account:
When communicating in Guild Wars 2 using global chat (including, without limitation, server wide chat and use of the whisper command), you may not spam, flood, or make duplicate posts. For more information, please see the Guild Wars 2 User Agreement.
This isn’t a question about ethics, it’s about Is what they’re doing legal, and can I be reported for it if I decide to possibly do it myself.

I’m no expert, but it sounds like it’s not one person spamming the chat, but rather a variety of people all doing it independently and of their own volition.
Of course, if the method to win the giveaway is to send the text ‘123456789’ over and over and over again, then those who spam that phrase ARE spamming.
But if it’s just a guy saying “guess my age” and a dozen people take two or three guesses each, I don’t think they can be accused of all being spammers.

It’s one person inciting the rest to spam.

Legendary? I bet saying “First 20 people to say ‘1’ get 10 silver” in Lion’s Arch would garner over 20 responses.

Your misinformed on what spam is. Remember, GW has a spam filter in place. If someone meets the spam defintion, it would of triggered. If not, your being oversensitive than Anets own filter, which makes no sense. If he incites them to spam, the filter would kick in when they meet Anets legal definition of Spam. If he somehow tells them an exploit to bypass the Spam filter to Spam, you have a case.

We’re both right on what spam is, just one of them is not controlled by the filter.

Nope.
One person saying:
Join my guild…
Join my guild…
Join my guild…
is spam.
One person saying:
Join my guild…
and a dozen people responding:
I’ll join!
I wanna join…
Sounds like a fun guild…
is a conversation.
Just because you don’t find the conversation interesting doesn’t mean that you can stop them from doing it. If it bothers you so much, don’t guest to that server.
A moderator post on this would be quite nice.

Simply answer: Yes it is spam.
Why is it spam? All the giveaway person has to do is ask people to spam whisper them these magical numbers and no one else would be inconvenienced by 100 numbers spamming across the screen. The fact that the giveaway person whats these number in map chat makes it far more likely they are just trolling and I find it dubious they actually give away anything

This was my logic on why it’s spam, and thank you for responding reasonably instead of aggressively.
I am however, going to keep this thread alive until I get an answer from an official source.
My personal stance is that while it may be aggravating for people reading the chat, it’s not spam any more than the cascade of non-stop “WTB/WTS” messages in Kamadan was spam. Annoying and headache-inducing, yes, but not technically spam.
You’re right in that the polite thing to do would be for the person giving away gifts to ask people to whisper them instead, and that is something I would urge donors to consider. However, the donor can’t control what other players do, and reporting them for it is unfair.
At any rate, if the speed of the map chat is getting annoying, there’s always the option to temporarily disable Map chat in your chat window.
If you can use the argument “it’s not spam because he was doing a giveaway” then I can say me bumping threads isn’t spam because I’m looking for responses.
Just sayin’.
Tell that to ANet, though. I quoted their rule, and provided a link to where it’s posted.
I realize you’re hoping for a redname answer, and while I believe my answer is correct I also realize that I could be wrong. Still, it does you little good to get in trouble for spamming while trying to get your answer.
Would this be a question better sent directly to support?

I quoted the rules as well for in-game behavior which mentions no spamming AND no flooding, and if that can go ignored why can’t this? Exact same argument, just a different color.
And I’m not sure which department to send the question to which is why I came to the boards.

I gather you are hoping for a comment from a moderator, but moderators handle forum matters not game matters. Their job is to make sure threads stay on topic, stop people from flaming each other and deleting threads that break forum rules. If spamming in game chat is bothering you enough, all you can do is report it and let it be handled from there.

Or not read it. Since no one holds a gun to your head forcing you to. That and multiple tabs for sorting chats. With options on what they show.
