I was messing around in the bank locker and found a katana greatsword skin. Not a scimitar like those Ceremonial weapons, but a full-fledged Japanese style sword. Oddly enough, though, the locker calls it an “Iron Greatsword.”

Any idea if this is part of a future update they’ll be doing, or does this thing actually exist right now? And if so, where can I get it?

It currently exists on an NPC. Belinda Delaqua wears that sword. Since it i in the wardrobe, we are expecting it will become available to players soon.

Sweet. Guess I’ll just be patient and keep my eyes open for it. This would be great for making a ninja/samurai-themed heavy.

I’m not sure if I can actually play before this gets released. I’ll just log in and drool at the sword in the wardrobe.

I just hope that it will be in it’s sheath when its on the back. That katana Sheath is really beautiful. It would be cool if you could dye it a different color than blue!!

This Katana is going to be super popular. There really should be a 1-handed version also for thiefs! this is going to be immensely popular. Maybe the most popular skin in the game, given all games have legions of fans dedicated to making their Sepiroth Ninja Clones!!

No, katana are meant to be used with both hands unless you are dual katana, which is very special katana art. And most dual katana art are one standard and one short katana.

I played a lot of japanese samurai game and watched their movie so to say.

Katanas can be used both as one-handed weapons and two-handed weapons. Generally, they’re being used as two-handed weapons, though the blade is light enough to be used easily with only one hand.

According to historical sources, Miyamoto Musashi, a samurai from the 17th century, made the art of fighting with two swords at the same time, where katana is being used as an one-handed weapon.

nodachi != katana

Katanas were worn on the waist but nodachis were too long to be worn that way. They were worn on the back (hard to draw quickly) or carried by hand.

No need to be upset mate – I meant one-handed in the terms of this skin. Other classes could benefit from this weapon if ArenaNet both made a Greatsword skin and a normal one-handed sword skin using this model.

4 classes can use greatswords, but even more classes can use a regular one-handed (including thiefs, mesmers, rangers, guardians, and with warrior you could dual wield dual katana’s)!!

Don’t listen to them. We do need Katanas.. we have all these Canta styled clothing and costumes but no weapons. Makes zero sense.

I previewed skin today and was sheathed when i had it on back.

What winterchillz said is correct but can I add that the other sword Musashi generally used in his off hand was a Wakazashi which is a shortened version of the regular Katana.

To equate them to western swords (as in the closest ones with regards to size) Wakizashi = Short Sword, Katana = Long Sword, Nodachi/Odachi (the one pictured above) = Claymore or kitten Sword (due to the filter think illegitimate son).

Hmm, to me, at least using the preview mode, it seems as if the handle and the blade itself isn’t long enough to meet the nodachi standards, but that’s just my impression. To me, the logical explanation of why the katana/nodachi is on the back of the character when stowed is because they’re both used as two-handed weapons in general therefore the sword is being categorized as Greatsword.

Whilst I agree that the handle doesn’t look long enough, for me when stowed the blade does look long enough. It’s a conundrum. I like to think it is a Nodachi simply because it’s worn on the back. But hey that’s just me :-P

I mean it doesn’t matter much. I just want the skin. Besides, I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that nodachis were too big to simply use in CQC and were swords that were used primarily on horse back as the blade was heavier than a standard katana so either way, whatever the blade is, we’re using/stowing it wrong…..unless gasp mounts confirmed

I just played through Episode 2 of Season 2. Without spoiling anything… What the hell. The skin is completely gone?

That or Anet was trolling us and we’ll end up getting a large ugly letter opener as a sword instead ._.

A Katana is a type of Nihonto, or, as we know it, a Japanese sword. There are numerous Nihonto that have the same shape and appearance as a Katana, but a Katana specifically refers to a sword that would be similar in length to a European Long Sword. A Katana can be wielded both single-handedly, or with both hands, but using both gives more control and strength. When paired with a Wakizashi (the equivilent to a Europian Short Sword in length), the two swords are known as a Daisho, which is what is commonly used in duel-bladed Japanese swordplay. Likewise, a Tanto (equivalent to a combat knife), and a Odachi/Nodachi (a 2-haned weapon equivalent to a claymore) also share a Katana’s shape.

As Otaku said, they could also use the same model but make it smaller to make a Tanto. Then other classes in turn can get the Katana look with knives.

Could it be that they are not putting it into the game because it would be too popular? A guildie of mine seems to think that everyone and their grandmother would wield Katana if it was put in the game!

Guys, stop freaking out. They probably just decided to take it out of the wardrobe temporarily to fix the issue with it being labeled “Iron Greatsword” and using the same icon when it’s clearly not correct.

We’ve already been able to buy the other NPCs’ weapons and they wouldn’t create a unique one for a side, one-off, character and then never use it again.
