Yes. If you buy a copy you get a key, you can give the key to a friend and they will register it as their account. Perfectly legit

I bought my copy on the first day of pre-purchase in a kind of hyped panic, but as I remember it you have to enter an email address when you buy the game and the code is emailed to that address.

But when you come to use the account you can put in a different email address to actually register it.

So you can buy it, using your own address, then either forward the email or just the code to your friend who can use it to register.
